Two Policemen were shot dead in Sector J of Madina Colony in Baldia Town. Police said that unidentified assailants, riding motorbikes, hurled a hand grenade at the shop of Awami National Party (ANP) leader Abdul Razzak Buneri and also opened fire. Buneri remained unhurt but the two Policemen, identified as Abdul Raheem and Khan Muhammad, were killed in the attack. Police suspected involvement of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the attack.

Three Policemen, including Crime Investigation Department (CID) Superintendent of Police (SP) Chaudhry Aslam Khan was killed and 10 others were injured when a suicide bomber smashed his car into Aslam’s convoy near Essa Nagri at the Lyari Expressway in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on January 9, reports Dawn. Two others were identified as Farhan (27) and Kamran (34). Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. TTP Mohmand Chapter ‘spokesperson’, Sajjad Mohmand said that the group has carried out a “successful” attack to take revenge for several Taliban members killed by the Police.

Lyari remain tensed as an armed clash occurred between rival groups of gangsters of the area on January 15, reports Daily Times. Two gangsters were killed in a joint encounter of police and rangers in the same locality. Police sources said that the clash started at Jhat Phat Market, Lyari between the members of Baba Ladla Group and defunct People’s Amn Committee (PAC) over the dispute of extortion money collection from vendors of the area. During the clash, both the groups used hand grenades, crackers, rockets and various weapons, and as a result tension prevailed in the area and adjacent localities of Lyari. A gangster belonging to PAC, named Zubair Hameed sustained bullet wounds and died on the spot, while at least six people including a volunteer Junaid, Muneez, Hunain, Naseer, Haji Ali and Ameen also sustained wounds in the clash.

Two Policemen, identified as Constables Rab Nawaz (35), and Abdul Hafeez (28), were injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded near a mobile van of the Jamshed Quarters Police Station in Lasbela Morr of Jamshed Town on January 23, reported The News. Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) officials said that the IED had been hidden in the ground. Police said the attack was intended to target paramilitary soldiers, whose mobile van stood at the spot routinely, but this time a Police mobile was stationed there instead to carrying out snap-checking in the area.

Two Rangers and the security guard of a nearby telephone exchange were killed while two passersby were wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the main entrance of the Headquarters of Pakistan Rangers Sacchal Wing. “A bearded young man, dressed in shalwar kameez and wearing a suicide vest, attempted to breach the Rangers HQ,” one of the surviving soldiers said. “He blew himself up as soon as one of our jawans noticed him and asked him to stop,” he added. Earlier, a bomb, planted by the roadside under the Nazimabad No 7 flyover, exploded but resulted in no casualties. However, 15 minutes later, as Rangers and Police personnel were collecting evidence from the site, the second bomb exploded. One Ranger was killed while four other Rangers, a Policeman, rescue worker and bystander were injured in the blast. Four persons including a senior Policeman Inspector Shafiq Tanoli were killed in a suicide attack in Old Sabzi Mandi area of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, on the morning of April 24 (today), reports The News. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nasir Lodhi, Inspector Shafiq Tanoli was killed along with his friend when a blast occurred in old vegetable market near his house when he was sitting inside a shop. Shafiq Tanoli was the Station House Officer (SHO) of Mawach Goth and was demoted and suspended from his post after he allegedly raided a house at Sea View in Defence area illegally. Shafiq Tanoli joined the Police force in 1989. He was also associated with the CID for some time and also had a role in the arrest of Arshad Pappu. Tanoli was also involved in the investigation of the Wali Khan Babar murder case and had previously escaped attempt on his life at least seven times before. Awan escaped unhurt. It was the third attempt on his life. The Bomb Disposal Squad confirmed the blast was carried out using a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. There were some sources that pointed towards the Abid Mucchar group of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), while CID pointed at Jundullah's involvement in the attack. Intelligence agencies had earlier issued a warning about possible attacks on senior Policemen in Karachi a few days back.

A nine-month-old girl died and eight people suffered injuries in an explosion caused by a hand grenade hurled outside an Imambargah (Shia place of worship) in the Federal B area of Karachi (Karachi District), the provincial capital of Sindh, in the night of October 28, reports The News. The explosion occurred outside the Islamic Research Centre Imambargah situated on the road intersection at the Ayesha Manzil in Federal B Area’s Block-6 in the limits of Gulberg Police Station. The blast occurred when a Muharram congregation of women was underway at around 9pm. Unidentified militants come from the Karimabad side who hurled an explosive device from a newly built flyover.
