The intensity of the blast was so high that it also badly damaged a nearby mosque. “The target was the Police Station and the nearby mosque. Police and paramilitary personnel were praying inside the mosque,” when the bombing took place, Bannu District Police Chief Mohammad Iftikhar said. “There are some civilians also but most of the victims are security personnel,” he added. Claiming the responsibility, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Azam Tariq said it was to avenge US drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal belt, which borders Afghanistan. “We claim responsibility for this attack. We will continue such attacks unless the drone attacks are stopped,” Azam Tariq added.

70 people, including 65 paramilitary forces and five civilians, were killed on May 13 (today) when a suicide bomb attack targeted Pakistan paramilitary personnel as they were about to leave from a Frontier Constabulary (FC) training centre in the Shabqadar tehsil (revenue unit) in Charsadda District, reported Express Tribune. “Sixty-five of them are from the paramilitary Police and five were civilians”, Charsadda District Police Chief Nisar Khan Marwat said. “The explosions detonated as newly trained cadets were getting into buses and coaches for a 10-day leave after their course, and they were wearing civilian clothes. The first bomb was a suicide attack. We are investigating the nature of the second bomb,” added Marwat. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed their first major strike in revenge for Osama bin Laden’s death, adds Dawn. “This was the first revenge for Osama’s martyrdom. A suicide bomber blew up a car laden with explosives at a checkpoint close to the Hangu Police Station and Hangu District Police Officer (DPO) Office in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on May 26 evening, killing 32 persons and injuring 60 others, reports Daily Times. A double-cabin pickup packed with explosives was detonated at a barrier outside the Hangu Police Station on Hangu-Thall Road, creating a 10-foot long and foot-deep crater, said a Senior Police Official. Regional Police spokesman Fazal Naeem feared most of those killed were policemen, and predicted that the toll would rise, because there were offices and residences of senior police and administration officials near the attack site. Kohat division Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Masood Khan Afridi said that “the bomber blew up the car at a checkpost near the Hangu Police Station”. He said 400 to 450 kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the attack. “The destruction due to the blast is beyond imagination,” he added. “The buildings housing the Police Station, DPO office and nearby residence of the DPO were partially damaged but at least 15 shops, including a tea house and a restaurant, are completely razed,” the DIG said, adding, “The death toll has now risen to 32.”
