Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said that the latest round of fighting began at 4:30 am when the militants attacked a check-post and the troops responded with mortar and small arms fire. He informed: "It is going on and helicopters are still engaged by law enforcing agencies… According to the information I have from the police and Frontier Constabulary, between 60 to 70 miscreants were killed in Swat's areas of Khwazakhela today." Locals of Khwazakhela, the main point of fighting on November 1, said that the military helicopters started strikes at 4 am, leading to an exodus of the local populace for safer places in the upper parts of the district – Madyan, Bahrain, Miandam and other places. Mortar shells were fired at the Taliban's alleged hideouts at Baryam, Salandai, Imam Dherai, Koza Bandai from the FC camp near Mingora, airport and other areas.

Provincial police chief Sharif Virk said SFs had used helicopter gun-ships and artillery to dislodge the militants from their positions. "Unless we clear the high ground positions and dislodge them from hilltops, it would be very risky and dangerous to move foot soldiers in Khwazakhela", he said. He also said that Matta, a major militant stronghold, would be targeted later. He put the militants’ strength in Swat at between 4,000 and 5,000. Virk added that food and ammunition had been provided to police holed up in a police station in Matta. "It’s too dangerous to evacuate them now. They can better defend themselves from inside," he stated.

Militants loyal to pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Fazlullah paraded 48 security force (SF) before media personnel in Swat of North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The SF personnel had surrendered during a week of fierce clashes. One unnamed soldier said, "The militants told us that we would not be harmed if we surrender. If not, then the entire population from the village below will climb up the hill and may kill you." The soldiers subsequently were given PKR 500 each before being released. One of the soldiers told BBC that they do not want to fight with their Muslim brothers who are fighting for the implementation of Sharia.

30 more people, including 20 militants and four civilians, were killed and more than 70 others, including 50 civilians, injured as security forces continued bombing suspected militants’ hideouts in the Shangla and Swat districts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on the third consecutive day on November 15, according to The News. Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad confirmed that 20 militants were killed - 12 of them in Shangla and eight in Swat. He said several militants were injured and their bunkers destroyed in the daylong shelling by the gunship helicopters and artillery in both the districts. The spokesman termed as baseless the militants’ claim that 60 soldiers were killed in Shangla in two days of fighting. Further, Gen Waheed admitted to have received some reports about civilian casualties in the Shangla district, but did not provide any details. “For the first time the troops have started operation to clear the Bisham-Shangla road and attacked a critical gorge about 5km from Alpuri. We have reports of the killing of 12 militants in that action,” Gen Arshad told Dawn. He claimed that the militants had abandoned Alpuri and fled to the mountains near Mingora.

Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad informed that since militants, whom he referred to as "robbers" and "dacoits", were hiding in residential areas the locals were advised to either expel them from their towns or themselves shift to other places so that they do not suffer in case of military action. He said militants' hideouts in both the Swat and Shangla districts were targeted by gunship helicopters, mortar and artillery shells which caused heavy losses to the militants but since fighting was still continuing there he could not receive actual death toll suffered by the militants.

Major Amjad Iqbal, the military spokesman in Mingora, told reporters that the majority of militants were either killed or had escaped to the mountains after the security forces (SFs) targeted them in their hideouts. He said 230 militants had so far been killed in clashes with the SFs in the Swat and Shangla districts. He said most of the militants were killed in Shangla while their death toll in Swat was 56. “Security forces entered the town of Imam Dheri, the main base of Maulana Fazlullah… He has gone underground,” Major Iqbal told AFP. Earlier, the chief military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said in Rawalpindi that 200 to 215 militants were killed in Swat and Shangla. However, there was no independent confirmation of the claim. About losses suffered by the military, Major Iqbal said four soldiers were killed while 15 wounded in the two days of fighting. He added that six more bodies of slain militants were recovered on November 28. He claimed one of them was an Uzbek national. Major Iqbal informed that the SFs had cleared the area between Mingora and Shakardarra in Matta subdivision, which had been a stronghold of the militants.

Security forces killed over 230 militants and arrested 90, including some foreign nationals, since the start of military operations in the Swat district of the NWFP, according to interior ministry spokesman Brig (retd) Javed Iqbal Cheema, Dawn reported. In his weekly press briefing on law and order on December 4, he said the operation in Swat was continuing and expressed the hope that elections in Swat would be held on January 8, along with other parts of the country. He claimed that "The situation has considerably improved and most of the areas have been cleared of the militants, enabling local residents to resume their normal activities." Cheema said the civil administration was functioning normally in the Swat and Shangla districts and police had set up pickets. The writ of the government, he added, would be also established in other areas.

The Pakistan Army claimed on December 8 that it has cleared almost all militants from Swat after killing 290 rebels and arresting another 143 in recent weeks. According to AFP, Major General Nasser Janjua said 20,000 troops backed by helicopter gun ships and artillery had driven the militants out of their strongholds in an ongoing military operation. “Fazlullah is still on the run with hardcore militants estimated to be between 200 to 400, including some foreigners,” Janjua told reporters in Mingora, and added, “The militants have retreated to two places in the mountains in the northwest of the valley and we will chase them there.” However, Janjua was careful not to claim success, saying the militants remain dangerous and likely will try to regroup for at least one major counter-attack, adds Associated Press. He said officials believe that some of the fighters loyal to Fazlullah have melted into the local populace, while the hardcore supporters have been pushed into the Piochar side valley. He also said Fazlullah had been involved with the “enemy”, and claimed al Qaeda had played a role in the unrest in the conservative region. He informed that said five soldiers and six civilians had been killed in the operation and around 20 civilians had also been wounded. He opined that it would take up to four months to stabilise the region, adding that it would take at least 12 months to reopen the region to tourists.
