According to The News, suspected militants on May 6 shot dead two policemen outside a bank in the Matta Bazaar of Swat district in the NWFP. "Aziz Ahmad and Sardar were guarding the Habib Bank Limited in Matta Bazaar when unidentified assailants opened fire on them, killing both of them on the spot," police and eyewitnesses said. At least 24 suspected militants were arrested and heavy arms and a motorbike recovered from them, the sources added. This was reportedly the second such incident in the last 24 hours when policemen were targeted by the militants. Earlier, a policeman, Haroon-ur-Rasheed, was shot dead in the Rahat Koat area of Matta sub-division on May 5.

The three officials were en route to Mingora from Matta when the militants opened fire on them at Badshah Chinar in Matta, killing them on the spot. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Swat chapter spokesman, Muslim Khan, claimed responsibility for the killings. The SFs continued shelling suspected militant hideouts in the Kabal and Matta subdivisions. A mortar shell hit a house in Akhun Killay of Kabal, killing a two-year-old girl, Asma and injuring eight people, including six women of the same family. Further, a mortar shell fell on another house that injured two persons. In addition, bodies of two persons, allegedly shot dead, were recovered from the Akhun Killay. Several houses and a mosque were also partially damaged in Ronial, Chapparial and Sar Banda as SFs targeted the hideouts of suspected militants in these areas. A person identified as Syed Haleem was killed and five others were injured in the shelling.

Five persons, including a former union council official, were killed in continuing violence in the Swat district of the NWFP on August 21, The News reported. The sources said an influential person of Ningwalai, Musa Khan, was shot dead by unidentified assailants as soon as he stepped out of the mosque after prayers. A passerby, Islam Gul, also sustained injuries in the incident. Unidentified gunmen also opened fire on former union council official, Muhammad Amin, and his three friends when they were on their way back home after shifting the body of Musa Khan to the Saidu Sharif Hospital. "All of them died on the spot," the sources said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killing of Musa Khan but did not claim the attack on Muhammad Amin.

A brother and two nephews of the ruling Awami National Party’s (ANP) Member of Provincial Assembly, Waqar Ahmed Khan, and nine other persons were killed and several others injured in clashes in Swat in the NWFP on August 25, Dawn reported. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan claimed his men had killed the brother of Waqar Ahmed Khan in revenge for the military operation which he said was being carried out on the directives of the ANP-led Government. The militants lobbed hand-grenades on the house of Iqbal Ahmed Khan, the elder brother of the legislator, in Shah Dheri area at about 8am (PST), killing him and his sons Jamil Khan and Abbas Khan. Four guards, Sultan Zarin, Sher Bahadar, Bismillah Jan and Lal Syed, were also killed and a servant was injured. The militants also shot dead Iqbal Khan’s neighbour Shafiullah Khan who was a soldier in the Frontier Constabulary, said police in the Kabal sub-division. Police said the militants also blew up the house of Iqbal Khan.

Sources said the militants attacked an Army base camp and a nearby police station in the Kabal sub-division with heavy weapons, injuring two security force (SF) personnel. The SFs continued artillery shelling on suspected hideouts of the militants in the Koza Bandai area of Kabal. Three persons, including a woman, were killed and 12 others injured when the houses of two civilians, identified as Amir Rehman and Said Jalal, were hit by shells. However, the military did not confirm the incident. Unidentified men shot dead two persons, namely Siraj of Babo and Zubair of Kotanai areas, while the militants also blew up the house of the PPP-S district chief Sher Shah Khan's brother in Koza Bandai area.

The gunman then escaped on foot from the scene on the outskirts of Mingora, local police official Khaista Rehman told AFP. “It was a targeted killing. The militants threatened him several times,” he said. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told Daily Times the inspector was not on the Taliban ‘hit-list’. But he owned the attacks on Awami National Party leaders and relatives of provincial ministers from the district in the recent past.
