Abdullah Khorasani, a militant who acted as a senior operations organiser for al Qaeda was targeted and killed in one of the two United States (US) drone strikes launched on January 10 on a compound near the town of Miranshah in the North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Dawn quoting an unnamed US official reported. US and Pakistani sources told Reuters that the target of the attack was Aslam Awan, a Pakistani national from Abbottabad, the same town where Osama bin Laden was killed last May 1-2, 2011. The sources described Awan, who also was known by the nom-de-guerre Abdullah Khorasani, as a significant figure in the remaining core leadership of al Qaeda. However, Pakistani officials could not confirm that Awan was killed in the drone attack, but the US official said he was.

The death of a senior al Qaeda leader in a US drone strike in the out skirts of Miranshah in the North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 10, the first strike in almost two months, signalled that the US-Pakistan intelligence partnership is still in operation despite political tensions, reports Dawn. The January 10 strike — and its follow-up two days later — were joint operations, a Pakistani security source based in the tribal areas said. They made use of Pakistani “spotters” on the ground and demonstrated a level of coordination that both sides have sought to downplay since tensions first erupted in January 2011 with the killing of two Pakistanis by a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) contractor Raymond Davis in Lahore. “Our working relationship is a bit different from our political relationship,” the source said. “It’s more productive.”

Two US drone strikes killed at least 21 militants near the Afghan border in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), on February 16, report Dawn. Sources said that six persons were killed and two others injured when two missiles slammed into a compound in the Spalga village near Miramshah. The identities of the persons who died could not be ascertained. Earlier, Dawn reported that only five militants killed in Spalga area of Miranshah. Hours later, another drone attacked a moving vehicle on the Zekerkhel-Khaisur road in Mir Ali tehsil (revenue unit). Official sources said 15 members of a militant group were killed. A security official said Uzbek militants had been killed in the attack on the vehicle, adds AFP. Those who died in the first attack belonged to Badar Mansoor and the Haqqani network, loyal to the Afghan Taliban, another official added. The New America Foundation, a think-tank in Washington says drone strikes in Pakistan have killed between 1,715 and 2,680 people over the past eight years. According to an AFP tally, 45 US missile strikes were reported in the tribal belt in 2009, 101 in 2010 and 64 in 2011.

US drone attack killed 15 militants in Hisokhel, east of Miranshah, the headquarter of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on June 4, reports Daily Times. Officials said two missiles slammed into a compound in the village of Hisokhel before dawn. “Fifteen terrorists were killed in a dawn strike on a compound. The bodies of those killed were unable to be identified,” a security official in Miranshah said. He said there were unconfirmed reports that foreigners were among the dead. In the debris, local people found letterheads of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), wooden beds, blankets and mattresses. Dawn reported that al Qaeda’s ‘second-in-command’ Abu Yahya al-Libi was the target of the US drone strike. US officials confirmed to The New York Times that Libi had been the target of the missile attack in North Waziristan, but could not say whether he had survived. The United States (US) on June 5 said that al Qaeda number two Abu Yahya al-Libi was killed in a drone attack at Hisokhel, east of Miranshah, the headquarter of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on June 4, reports Dawn. “Our government has been able to confirm al-Libi’s death,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney, ending a prolonged US tussle with a man who once escaped from a US jail in Afghanistan, and had defied previous attempts to kill him. “It is significant,” another US official said, saying Libi headed al Qaeda operations in Pakistan and had outreached to affiliates such as Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which has attacked US targets. News of the killing of Libi followed reports detailing the scope of the US campaign against global terrorism, including revelations that President Barack Obama personally presides over a “kill list” of top suspects. Al Libi, a hero in militant circles for his 2005 escape from the US military prison in Bagram, Afghanistan, was elevated to al-Qaeda’s No. 2 spot when Ayman al-Zawahri rose to replace the slain Osama bin Laden. Militants and residents in the area told Pakistani agents that al-Libi was in the house when it was hit, Pakistani intelligence officials said. They said the mud and brick house was completely destroyed. A local Taliban chief, on condition of anonymity, said al-Libi was not present at the house, though his guard and driver were killed. However, residents of the village said Libi was killed as an unusually high number of militants gathered there after the drone strike and they kept people away. They usually bury the bodies after a drone strike in the nearest graveyard, said one of the villagers, describing the aftermath of previous strikes in the area. This time they put all the bodies in their cars and took them away.

Twenty four persons were killed and 10 others were injured in United States (US) drone strikes in the Gorwaik village of Dattakhel area in North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on July 6, reports The News. There were reports that the death toll could rise as the drones had fired eight missiles and caused widespread destruction in the village. Official and tribal sources said that six US drones were seen flying over the Gorwaik village since afternoon near the Afghan border. Gorwaik, which is about 65 kilometres west of Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, is close to the Urgoon area of Afghanistan’s Paktika province. Government officials also confirmed that 24 persons were killed in the drone attack. They feared the death toll could rise as some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. Datta Khel is considered to be a stronghold of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a Taliban commander who is accused of sending fighters across the border to fight NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Days after leading hundreds of peace activists to the door steps of drone afflicted South Waziristan Agency (FATA), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on October 9 said that shooting down drones attacking Pakistani areas would be an option of last resort and that the key to peace in FATA lay with its armed tribal residents, reports The Express Tribune. Speaking with Talat Hussain on Express News show “Live with Talat”, Khan said that the only way to bring peace to the troubled badlands of Pakistan was to visibly pull out of America’s war, call for an end to drone strikes and entrust the armed tribals to Police their own areas. Detailing that the objective of his march was to create peace by taking tribals on board, he stressed that true peace could only be achieved once the war of hearts and minds are won. “War on terror was a war against extremism, but it has only served to intensify extremism,” he said. The second objective of the march, Khan said, was to talk with tribals of agencies afflicted by drones and militancy. He said that there is a need to combat the perception that Pakistan is fighting America’s war which breeds hatred against the Government. “You need to get out of America’s war, to remove the perception we are getting money from US, or take their orders, tell the tribals that the jihad has ended. Only then the local people will stand up against militants.” Offering a solution to militancy, he said “the only way is to give tribals the responsibility to deal with the militants, and then gradually withdraw our forces and exit US’ war.”

The building belonged to Maulvi Shakirullah, a ‘commander’ in the forces of Hafiz Gul Bahadur group. Bahadur is an ally of the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network blamed by the Americans for a string of high-profile attacks in Afghanistan.
