Suspected militants attacked an Army convoy with a remote control bomb near Mir Ali in North Waziristan, but there were no casualties, security officials said. They said that the Military convoy was headed towards Bannu from Miranshah when it came under attack. The explosion slightly damaged a vehicle, the security officials said. Abdullah Farhad, a purported spokesman for pro-Taliban militants, told Daily Times that militants were not involved in the attack on the Army convoy. Farhad said the militants would publicly denounce their peace agreement with the Government before any such attack. He said that militant leader, Hafiz Gul Bahadur, had asked the Government to fulfil its remaining obligations under the September 5 peace accord, which include restoration of tribal incentives and removal of military check posts.

Security forces, assisted by helicopter gunships, killed 15 militants in an encounter near the Banda checkpoint in North Waziristan on July 31, according to Dawn. Major General Waheed Arshad, Director-General of the Inter-Services Public Relations, said 18 "miscreants" were killed when about 40 of them tried to attack a military checkpoint near Miranshah, Daily Times reported. Though the military spokesperson denied any casualties among the troops, villagers said some soldiers were killed or injured in the fighting. The clash reportedly occurred when two vehicles were seen moving towards a paramilitary post, some five kilometres south of the Miranshah town. Even as the troops fired warning shots from the Banda post, people in the vehicles fired back at the paramilitary forces and an encounter ensued. The troops later also utilised Cobra helicopters which targeted suspected locations of the militants in the area and the two vehicles. Sources said that the troops had encircled the Banda area and the Miranshah village.

Nine persons were killed and 43 others injured when a suicide car bomber triggered an explosion at a busy bus stop near the entry point of Parachinar city in the Kurram Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on August 4, according to Daily Times. A 10-year-old girl was among those killed in the attack. Dr. Muhammad Hanif Jan of the Parachinar hospital told Daily Times that four people died instantly in the suicide car bombing while five others succumbed to their wounds in the hospital. He added that 43 injured people were being treated and the condition of some of them was critical. Eyewitnesses said that a car driven by a bearded man crashed into another car from behind at 10:30 am and as people gathered there was a big explosion. Kurram Agency Political Agent Sahibzada Anees confirmed that it was a suicide attack and said that security was already high in the city and it was not clear whether the bomber had a different target or he was simply interested in killing people. Security officials said that the political agent was to pass through the same entry point and it was not clear if he was the bomber’s target.

At least 15 people were reported to have died after army’s helicopter gun-ships attacked the Degan village in North Waziristan on August 9-evening following a roadside bomb blast which left four soldiers injured, according to Dawn. Army spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad informed that army helicopters chased the militants – who were carrying rocket launchers and small arms – as they fled after carrying out the bombing into a petrol station and later in their vehicles, according to The News. Helicopters reportedly bombed residential compounds and other infrastructure, destroying a petrol pump and five vehicles. While witnesses claimed that most of the people killed in the air strike were ordinary tribesmen, an unnamed official spokesman insisted that most of those killed were militants. The four soldiers were wounded when a bomb exploded near the Boya checkpoint on the Miranshah-Datakhel road. Residents said a military convoy was on way to Miranshah when one of the vehicles in the convoy struck a bomb near the checkpoint.

Seven soldiers were killed and 18 others sustained injuries on August 24 in North Waziristan in four militant attacks, including two suicide bombings targeting the same Pakistan Army convoy at two different places, according to The News. One of the suicide bombers rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the military convoy near the Qamar Picket built on a roadside hill near the Mir Ali town, killing five soldiers and injuring 10 others. Cobra gunship helicopters reportedly attacked suspected militant hideouts later but reports about any loss of life were not available. The same convoy, which had come from Bannu in the North West Frontier Province and was on its way to Razmak, was attacked once more when it proceeded further. Another suicide bomber riding a vehicle struck the convoy near Asadkhel village on the road to Razmak, killing two soldiers and injuring two others. Villagers in Qutabkhel said gunship helicopters shelled the area after the attack on the military convoy. Military officials were later quoted as saying that two militants were killed by the troops in retaliatory firing. The third convoy to be attacked was reportedly transporting troops from the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) from Qutabkhel to Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan. The letter said the local Taliban had no enmity with any individual or a religious organisation, but warned of strong resistance if anybody tried to harass or arrest them. It said the blasts were a warning to people in Bara who had shed the blood of Pakistani and Afghan “Mujahideen”.

At least 20 persons, including two doctors, were killed and over 50 others were injured during a sectarian clash at Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurram Agency, in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on November 16, reports The News. Power supply was disrupted in the area following the clash. The clash ensued after two people were attacked in Parachinar city on November 15. Later shops and markets were partially closed, according to Dawn. Paramilitary and Levy forces were deployed in sensitive locations, including places of worship in the town. Despite the presence of paramilitary personnel, warring factions started attacking each other’s positions with mortar shells and rockets. According to one report, army and paramilitary forces were trying to work out a truce and were making announcements asking rival groups to stop fighting. However, some people accused paramilitary personnel for creating trouble and said that scouts who took positions in the city early in the morning had opened fire. “It was all a pre-planned attack and people expected this turmoil,” said an elder of the area.

Fifteen soldiers were killed and 38 others injured in an attack and in roadside explosions in different areas of North Waziristan on December 12, according to Dawn. However, the military said in a statement that six soldiers had been killed and 25 injured in the ambush. It informed that militants had suffered 15 casualties in a counter-attack. Major General Arshad Waheed said security forces backed by gunship helicopters spotted the fleeing militants and opened fire, killing 15 of them in “immediate retaliation”, AP reported. Local people said they had seen the bodies of 15 soldiers and disputed the military’s claim that 15 militants had been killed. A military convoy, going from Miranshah to the Razmak sub-division, came under intense firing by militants after it had hit an improvised explosive device in the Dosali area. The militants reportedly used heavy machine-guns and rockets. Three army trucks were damaged in the attack. Sources said the convoy struck another explosive device in the Damdail area and four soldiers were wounded. Another convoy, going from the Razmak sub-division to Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan, hit a bomb planted on the road, leading to two soldiers being injured.
