Reports from Nepal, quoting the Home Ministry, on January 2, said one Maoist insurgent was killed in clashes with police in a village in Baitadi district on January 1. In a separate incident, a Maoist insurgent was killed in clashes with troops in Bhajang district. Subsequently, three guns, bombs and explosives were recovered from the encounter site. Also, security forces recovered three more guns in Solokhumbu, the scene of the November 25-clashes––the biggest since the insurgency was launched six years ago. At least 250 rebels and several security forces were killed on that day in the clashes there.

One rebel, identified as the ‘Chariman’ of the local Maoist Village People’s Committee, was killed in Dubi Danda, Rolpa district. Another rebel was killed at Dang while attempting to attack a government unit in the area. In search operations at Palawang in Salyan district, a third rebel was killed. The fourth rebel was killed in an encounter at Katuwachauari in Parbat district. In Myagdi two soldiers were killed and six more injured, in an ambush laid by the insurgents. One insurgent was also killed in the incident.

Chief District Officer of Jumla Damodar Pant and two civilians died in the assault reports said. Several hundred insurgents are feared dead in security forces counter offensives in Jumla. A report added that the number could be as high as 300, besides, the 55 confirmed killed, whose bodies have been recovered. Also, 33 policemen and four soldiers were killed in the clashes in Jumla. In the clashes in Gorkha, 23 policemen and at least 63 Maoist insurgents have been confirmed killed.
