A day earlier, hundreds of political leaders and activists, students and professionals were arrested. According to the CPN (UML), dozens of party leaders were arrested early in the morning while plainclothes police personnel searched the residences of several other leaders. Similarly, hundreds of protesting students were detained from various campuses in the capital Kathmandu. Dozens of professionals, including journalists and lawyers, were also arrested from separate rallies organised in Kathmandu.

Nepal News reports that over 400 pro-democracy protesters and journalists were arrested in Kathmandu while dozens of others were injured on the first day of the four-day nationwide general strike called by the seven-party alliance (SPA) on April 6. Violent protests were reported from the Kalanki, Naya Baneshwor, Chabahil and Kirtipur areas where the protesters set ablaze tyres on the streets while the police baton-charged and fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disrupt the protests. Other reports added that marketplaces, industries, schools and colleges remained closed in the capital and no vehicles, except for the diplomatic and UN vehicles, plied throughout the day. The Home Ministry, meanwhile, said that 167 persons were arrested while defying the prohibitory orders effective within the Ring Road area in Kathmandu and Lalitpur.

Protests continued on the second day of the four-day nationwide strike against King Gyanendra being organised by the seven-party alliance. The district post office in Lalitpur was reportedly set ablaze and students at the Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur ransacked the Dean’s office and briefly held several officers hostage. Public transport, shops and schools across the country were reportedly shut. Presidents of Government and corporation employees’ unions said they have extended support to the movement to safeguard their professional and trade union rights. They said employees of the Nepal Electricity Authority, various corporations and banking sectors stopped work on April 7 to express solidarity with the movement. A number of protestors were arrested in Jumla, Morang, Pokhara, Lamjung, Hetauda, Chitwan, Lahan, Kalaiya, Baglung, Charikot, Dipayal and Butwal. Normal life was also reportedly affected in the Surkhet, Rautahat, Gorkha and Tanahun districts.

A protestor was killed when police opened fire at activists of the seven political parties in Banepa. Three others were critically injured in the firing. In Bara, two demonstrators were injured when SF personnel opened fire at the demonstrators. In Syangja, Nepali Congress district leader Kedar Kafle was critically injured when SFs opened fire. In Butwal, one person died at Traffic Chowk when the SF personnel opened fire while at Nawalparasi, four demonstrators were injured when armed police opened fire in Gaindakot.

In the capital Kathmandu, police action on protestors at the Chabahil-Chuchepati area left 62 injured. In Kalaiya, at least 24 agitators were injured when police intervened in a rally. In Narayangarh, four agitators were injured when SFs opened fire at them at Ratnanagar municipality. In Birgunj, over a dozen activists were injured when police intervened in a demonstration. In Ramechhap, three protestors were injured in police action at Manthali. In Itahari, SF personnel fired dozens of rounds at demonstrators, injuring 24. Six police personnel were also injured in the clash. In Nepalgunj, 20 demonstrators were injured in police action.
