Meanwhile, the insurgents have reportedly abducted 60 teachers from their homes in the Singnam Village Development Committee (VDC) area of Taplejung district on April 13. According to Nepal News, air and land surveillance by the security forces in the three districts foiled the Maoists’ programme. However, the Maoists abducted at least 40 women from Gaukhet in the Dadeldhura district on April 22. The Magarat Liberation Front, a Maoist front organization, abducted the women to make them participate in a week-long party programme.

The hostages were freed at Nundhaki in the Sankhuwasabha district amidst representatives of the International Committee of Red Cross, human rights activists and media personnel. A Maoist statement claimed that the abductees were treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention, reported The Himalayan Times. However, Brigadier General Ananta Bahadur Thebe said that they had not been able to contact the police personnel. "We cannot say anything before we establish contact with them," he added.

The Maoist insurgents have abducted about 500 teachers from 30 different villages of the Udaypur district during this week, indicated reports on June 3. According to the District Education Officer quoted in Nepal News, there are a total of 578 teachers in the district. The insurgents allegedly abducted the teachers to give them a brief training on Maoist literature and also to force them into following the Maoist ‘educational calendar’. Over 30,000 students have reportedly been denied education because most schools in Udaypur have closed down due to the abductions.

The insurgents handed over Moktan to the district-based human rights activists and journalists at Berphulang on December 6. The insurgents have also released Suresh Rajbanshi, one of the two persons who they had abducted along with Mokatan.
