The President of Maldives Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom on February 14 claimed that the Supreme Court of Maldives is responsible for multiple violent breakouts in the nation, reports Avas Online. On February 1, the Supreme Court of Maldives had ordered the immediate release of nine political prisoners including the former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and also cancelled the nation’s Anti-Defection law, which results to the opposition party’s sudden gain in the parliament majority. Certainly the supporters of the present Maldivian Government would have not stay silent if we [Maldivian Government] had moved forward and released all those criminals [political figures]. They would have people coming out to the streets and so would we. Where does that end? It would have ended with violence and riots. It could have eventually led to bloodshed and gruesome endings," said President Yameen while addressing his party members at the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) camp.

Addressing the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) youth gathering, Maldivian President Abdullah Yameen on February 15 claimed that India would remain as the ‘closest’ ally of the Maldives despite of its any doubts it [India] has regarding the Maldives, reports Mihaaru. There are some people who would like to convert the Maldives from a ‘paradise on Earth’ to a ‘war-zone’. Maldives’ location is a geographically strategic location and we shall not turn it into a war-zone but must try to gain the economic benefits from it, said Abdullah Yameen. Highlighting the request of former President Mohamed Nasheed to India for providing Military intervention into the political crisis in the Maldives, Abdullah Yameen said that the Indian Army would not come to the Maldives as there is no requirement of them to be in here. India had raised concerns about the political situation in the Maldives after the declaration of state of emergency on February 5.

Speaking at ‘The Huddle’—a thought conclave conducted by ‘The Hindu’ publication on February 17, the Maldives’ former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that his country does not want any dispute or clashes between India and China, reports The Indian Express. A day after Nasheed sought India’s Military intervention in the political crisis in the Maldives, China opposed any Military intervention in the Island. Maldives is of strategic importance to both India and China. Maldives has nothing to do with China, but the latter must not attempt to change the ‘State type’, said Nasheed.

Expressing its ‘deep’ disappointment over Maldives’ extended State of Emergency (SoE) for another 30 days, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on February 21 released a statement stating the ‘move unconstitutional’, reports The Hindu. The way in which the SoE was approved by the Majlis (Parliament of Maldives) was a contravention of the Constitution of Maldives and it is a matter of concern, read the statement. The MEA’s interpretation is incorrect as the Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen declared the SoE and the Majlis extended it. To verify any issues with the approval of SoE, the matter will be forward to the Maldives’ Supreme Court, said Maldives’ Ambassador to India Mohamed Ahmed. Later on February 21, the Maldives’ Supreme Court cleared the validity of the SoE.

Following the expression of disappointment over the 30 days extension of State of Emergency (SoE) in the Maldives, India on February 22 urged to release all political prisoners, reports Maldives Times. Over the situation, India does not see any ‘valid reason’ for the extension of SoE, therefore India urged the Maldivian Government to ‘free’ political prisoners including the Chief Justice, and implement the judicial decision of Maldives’ Supreme Court which further reinstate the normal functioning of the institutions of democracy, said an unnamed Spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Maldives’ Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim claimed that the European Union (EU) is likely to impose sanctions on the Maldives as the members of EU Parliament hinted the same to him, reports Rajje on February 24. Many countries, including EU member countries, had issued travel advisories on the Maldives due to the political crisis. Noting that countries such as China and the United Kingdom (UK) have done so, it is likely that EU would impose sanctions that would result in the Maldives’ economy suffering enormously, said Qasim Ibrahim.

Responding to the European Union’s (EU) urged to end the State of Emergency (SoE) in the Maldives, the Maldivian Government on February 26 assured that SoE would end as soon the threats to National Security are nullified, reports Avas Online. The Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) of the EU on February 26 adopted a series of conclusions on the Maldives situation, in light of the recent deterioration of the situation in the island nation. As expected, the FAC adopted a seven point conclusion which included a call to Maldivian Government to immediately end the SoE and restoration of all Constitution Rights. "The Government of Maldives appreciates the EU for standing with the Maldives during this difficult period and calls to help facilitate the ongoing efforts to resolve the current Constitutional Crisis, and to return to normalcy,” read a statement released by the Maldives’ Foreign Ministry.

The Supreme Court has sentenced the former President Maumoon Andul Gayoom and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court—Abdulla Saeed to 19 months of imprisonment. Therefore, it is with deep dismay that we [India] learned that the former President of the Maldives, as well as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, are being sentenced to long prison terms without fair trial, read the statement released by the MEA.
