The Government of Maldives on January 23, had strongly condemned the statement of its former President Mohamed Nasheed over the terrorism and the Maldives and accused him to exaggerate the remarks for his own personal and political benefits, reports Maldives Independent. During a press conference held on January 22, Nasheed stated that the religious radicals were ready to overrun the country and around 300 Maldivians are fighting in Iraq and Syria. “Once they [Maldivians] are out of Iraq and Syria, they are obligated to return back to Maldives and it would be difficult to imagine how they could be stopped”, said Nasheed.

Addressing the official function to mark India’s 69th Republic Day on January 26, India’s Ambassador to Maldives Akhilesh Mishra has described the relationship between India and Maldives ‘far beyond’ of the conventional diplomacy with strong ties, reports Raajje. It has been a privilege to work with local Maldivian authorities for heart-warming support and the resemblance between two languages [Hindi and Dhivehi], culture and folklore that is a statue of strong relation of India and Maldives. India focused on delivering transparency, accountability of good governance, reforming the society, reforming regulations in order to ease the business and trade in India. Our ancient sages and Vedas had cautioned us, that the existence of the human being is not and cannot be seen in isolation. Individual human being and human existence is, but a tiny part of global society, said Akhilesh Mishra in his address. The Republic Day function was attended by senior Maldivian Government officials, including Maldives’ Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar, Gender Minister Zeneesha Shaheed Zaki, State Minister of Ministry of Health, Dunya Maumoon, and Health Minister Abdullah Nazim as the Guest of Honour.

The Maldivian Army on February 14, forcibly removed the opposition lawmakers from the premises of the People’s Majlis (Parliament of Maldives), reports Maldives Independent. The uniformed officers of Maldivian Army restricted and manhandled the Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Majlis’ building. We would submit an appeal to start the Parliament sessions and meet the Deputy Secretary General in this matter. Often the Military forces us out of the Majlis but today they had locked and chained the gates. When we went in they carried us and threw us out over the gate. I went in three times and was thrown out three times, said Opposition MP Ahmed Mahloof. The Maldives is currently under a State of emergency as the present-President Abdullah Yameen alleged that he had to declare it to investigate a plot to overthrow his present Government.

The Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen on February 19, sought a Parliamentary approval with intentions to extend the state of emergency for a month, with an excuse of a threat to National Security has not been minimized and the political crisis are yet to be resolved, reports Reuters. The opposition members of the Parliament boycotted the session as only 39 out of 85 members of Parliament (MPs) were present, the appeal was cancelled and an ‘extraordinary sitting’ on the same issue has been scheduled for the next day, i.e. February 20. President Yameen imposed a state of emergency on February 5 for 15 days to cancel the Maldives’ Supreme Court decision that withdrew the convictions against nine opposition leaders including former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and ordered his [Yameen’s] Government to release those held in prison. Abbas Adil Riza—a notable official of the Maldivian Embassy based in Malaysia had accused India for conspiring to ‘overthrow’ the present Government of Maldives, reports Avas Online on February 24. India was a ‘base’ of staging a coup attempt to ‘topple’ the Government in Maldives, with intentions to replace President Abdulla Yameen with his nephew Ahmed Faris Maumoon. To achieve this, the Indian Government had financed a prominent leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) and a business tycoon in Maldives—Qasim Ibrahim to coordinate a coup attempt, claimed Adil Riza. Reportedly, Siyad Qasim—eldest son of Qasim Ibrahim had been arrested on charges of financing the coup attempt while lawmakers Abdulla Sinan and Ilham Ahmed had also been arrested on similar charges.

The Maldivian Military had rejected the invitation from the Indian Navy to join India’s bi-annual Military exercise—‘Milan’ and had not provided any reason for declining the invitation, reports Rajje on February 27. India had invited Maldives to participate in the exercise, but they [Maldives] declined it. They [Maldives] did not provide any reasons but I think it is due to the current situation there, said Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba. ‘Milan’— which was first held in 1995, will be held from 6th-13th March 2018 and 16 nations had confirmed to be participating in this Military exercise. A total of 23 countries have been invited to the multilateral exercise. Milan is specifically aimed at exercises for littoral nations held by the Indian Navy’s Andaman and Nicobar Command, which manages India’s engagement with regional Navies.

An establishment of China’s Joint Ocean Observatory Station (JOOS) in the Maldives has raised a ‘flag’ of security concern for India as the observatory would have a Military application with a provisional Submarine base, reports Avas Online on February 28. The establishment of the Observatory in Makunudhoo island—a Western-most in the North (near to India) would allow the China to monitor a key Indian Ocean shipping route via which many merchants and other ships passes, said an unnamed political member in the Maldives. An official agreement titled as the ‘Protocol on Establishment of Joint Ocean Observation Station’ between China and the Maldives was finalised in 2017 when the two countries also had signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), said an unnamed Indian official. However, the Chinese Government through the Global Times newspaper has denied the claims of China’s marine cooperation with the Maldives carried no Military intentions and the ‘Indian media were stretching the reports that stems out of jealousy of Chinese cooperation with other South Asian countries.

Maldives Opposition Party’s supporters on March 6 organised a rally in Sri Lanka against the Maldivian Government, urging to release the nine political prisoner and re-instate 12 Member of Parliaments (MPs) with immediate effect, reports Mihaaru. Around 100 protesters gathered at front gates of the Maldivian Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka, carrying placards, banners and posters in support of the political leaders and other administrative officers arrested during the ongoing State of Emergency (SoE). The protest in Sri Lanka has exposed the weakness and unpopularity of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)—the Opposition party in Maldives. These issues are not implemented or resolved by the Embassy. Around 10,000 Maldivians are living in Sri Lanka and merely 100 Maldivians joined the protest. This highlights the unpopularity of MDP, said Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Mohamed Shareef.

The Maldives’ top Judges—Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed of the Supreme Court of the Maldives, on May 10, found guilty on the charge of influencing official conduct and were sentenced to imprisonment for a year-seven months and six days, report Maldives Independent. Their trial was kept secret and not shared with the media or public. However, both Judges denied their charges. The officials of the Maldives State electricity company—Stelco had visited Pakistan last week [date unspecified] and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in “institution building” activities. The MoU between the Maldives and Pakistan is unclear for Indian officials as all the major projects of Stelco are being handled by Chinese companies. "Given its shaky financial situation, Pakistan cannot do much to help the Maldives financially. But Maldives’ President Yameen is trying his best to reduce Indian footprint and bring in elements hostile to India to undermine Indian influence in the Maldives," said an unnamed Indian official. Indian officials do believe that the presence of Pakistani officials in the Maldives will see as the development of covert Intelligence modules which will target India. The fear is that this might complicate the Security situation in the Maldives which is struggling to check radicalisation in its own country.
