A 35-year-old man, believed to be a Special Police Officer (SPO) of Chhattisgarh Police, was stabbed to death by suspected militia members of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) during a cockfighting event near Kommanapalli village in Dummugudem mandal (administrative unit) in Khammam District close to the inter-State border with Chhattisgarh on January 15, reports The Hindu. According to sources, the craze for cockfighting proved fatal for Madivi Somaiah of the neighbouring State. Sources said Somaiah of Gollapalli village in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh, was attacked by unidentified persons with knives when he was allegedly participating in the cockfight event near Kommanapalli in the evening. He reportedly succumbed to injuries on the spot.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) militia members, involved in murder, arson and other insurgency related crimes, were arrested by Narayanpur District Police on April 30, reports The Pioneer. Narayanpur Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) N K Sahu said troopers of District Police force arrested the duo in the jungles of Matla. Those who surrendered were identified as Ladda Nachika, Kayu Nachika, Rajeya Kendruka, Rameya Kendruka, Kesari Kenduka from Dumsil village (Koraput District) and Rabi Huluka, Sekaru Huluka, Siu Huluka from Basanaput village (Koraput District). An active member of Malangir Area Committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Kosa (30), was arrested during a search operation of a joint Police team in Dantewada District on August 31, reports The Pioneer. Kosa was included as the member of their frontal organisation Dandkarandya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan, Malangir in 2012 and president of Tikanpal unit. Kosa’s main responsibility was membership drive which included holding meetings with villagers to convince them about the organisation’s ideology and plans, distribution and pasting of posters, Naxal [left-Wing Extremism (LWE)] literature and pamphlets in villages, road cutting, etc. Besides this, he also used to collect secret information about Police and forwarded it to the senior cadres and also committed crimes as per instructions of the senior cadres of the organization.

On a tip-off the Giddi Police arrested five Naxalites [Left-Wing Extremists (LWEs)], identified as Raj Kumar Gupta, Sandeep Sao, Nakul Sao, Prakash Kumar Sao and Ram Chandra Sao, from a house in Chumba village of Dadi block in Hazaribagh District on September 1, reports The Pioneer. The Police recovered two country-made carbines, 10 live cartridges, six mobiles and some posters from their possession. The arrested Naxalites have confessed that they were involved in kidnappings in Barkagaon and other seven cases in Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Chatra and Koderma Districts. They also confessed that they collected levy five times from different business firms. Superintendent of Police (SP) Hazaribagh Manoj Kaushik said they had formed a new organisation named Jharkhand Tiger Group (JTG).

A militia member of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Muvvala Ranju, surrendered before the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Vishal Gunni at Narsipatnam in Visakhapatnam District on September 9, reports The Hindu. Ranju, native of Palakajeedi in Koyyuru mandal (administrative unit) was involved in offences like burning of a jeep and destroying electronic voting machines (EVMs) at Palakajeedi during the May 2014 General Elections and providing help to Maoists in organising their meetings, collecting information and participating in destructive activities of Maoists, Gunni said.

Maoists are observing a ‘Prisoners of State Sympathy Week’ in the Ralegada forest since September 13, sources said. Organisers of the week said the programme is being observed to express sympathy towards the hundreds of innocent tribals and their family members in Districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati and Rayagada who are rotting in various jails after being implicated in false cases and branded as Maoists by the Police. All the three Maoists, namely Manku Kachlam (31), his wife Anita (30) and ‘jan-militia commander’ Sukhram Kawde (22) cited disillusionment with the functioning of the CPI-Maoist and ill-treatment by senior cadres as the reason to turn themselves in, they said. While Manku and Anita surrendered in Kondagaon District, Kawde surrendered in Dantewada District. Popularly known as 'shikshika' (teacher) among ultras in the region, Anita was a prominent cadre in Kondagaon. Anita worked in Barda dalam (squad) of Maoists during 2006-2009 and subsequently shifted to Pakhanjore and worked along with ultras of Maharashtra. Anita carrying a reward of INR 320,000 on her head, also headed Chetna Natya Manch (CNM), a cultural outfit of the CPI-Maoist, in Badedongar and used to handle 'Natya Shala', meant for training new recruits in cultural wing of the proscribed organisation. Anita's husband Manku was an active member of military dalam Platoon number 5 and INR 800,000 was announced for his arrest.
