Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch District on January 1, but there were no casualties or damage on the Indian side, reports Daily Excelsior. “There was firing by Pakistani troops from 9 am along LoC in Shahpur sub sector of Poonch district today (January 1),” official sources said. The Indian troops retaliated and there was a brief exchange of firing, they said, adding there were no casualties. The firing took place in Shahpur sector of Poonch for about an hour. There was slight panic among the people during the firing but it subsided as bullets stopped within an hour. Earlier, on December 30, 2016, a civilian was killed as Pakistan army indulged in heavy cross-border firing targeting Indian positions and civilian areas along the LoC in Poonch sector, prompting the Indian side to give a befitting reply. The 2003 India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement has virtually become redundant with a whopping over 300 incidents of firing and shelling along LoC and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) by Pakistani troops that resulted in death of 27 people, including 14 security personnel, since the surgical strike on terrorist launch pads in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on September 28-29 in which over 50 Pakistani militants and army personnel were killed.

The Border Security Force (BSF) thwarted an intrusion bid at International Border (IB), which originated from Pakistan side, in Samba sector in Samba District, followed by heavy mortar shelling and firing in the forward areas on February 6, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said a group of heavily armed militants reached close to the IB on Pakistan side taking advantage of undulating ground in Samba sector at 8.45 am and opened heavy firing on the BSF personnel deployed on duty mound in forward areas with automatic weapons. The BSF personnel swiftly organized coordinated effected fire over the militants not only to suppress their firing but forced them to retreat to Pakistan from where they had been launched into the Indian Territory to target forward BSF posts, infiltrate into this side and carry out terror attacks on Security Force (SF) installations and civilian areas. Retaliatory firing by alert BSF personnel thwarted designs of not only the militants but also the Pakistani Rangers, who had been facilitating their infiltration attempt into the Indian side.

Official sources said Pakistan Army started shelling with two inch mortars and firing with automatic and semi automatic weapons in several forward areas falling under BG and Balakote sectors in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch District at 6 am on March 19. “Troops from this side retaliated effectively, leading to heavy exchanges that continued for 45 minutes. The firing and shelling from Pakistan side stopped after befitting retaliation was given by the Indian side to silence the guns of enemy troops and prevent civilian casualties and loss of property,” they said. Pakistan Army continued to violate ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector in Poonch District for third consecutive day on September 3, leading to heavy exchanges and triggering panic among the border dwellers, reports Daily Excelsior. While there were no casualties or damages on the Indian side, Pakistan claimed one casualty in Abbaspur sector opposite Krishna Ghati in Poonch District. Official sources said that apart from one casualty, which Pakistan officially admitted, there were some infrastructural damages across LoC in heavy retaliation by the Indian side on September 3 morning. Mortar shelling and firing from Pakistan stopped only after retaliatory action was taken by the Indian side, report said.Sources said Pakistani troops started heavy shelling using 81mm and 82mm mortars and firing with both automatic and semi-automatic weapons in forward areas of Balakote, Mankote and Mendhar along LoC in Poonch District at around 8.50 am. Pakistani troops targeted forward posts of the Army and civilian areas at all three places prompting the people, who had started leaving for day’s work in fields and other places, to rush back home and take shelter. “Pakistan army directly pounded the civilian areas, a result of which many mortar shells landed close to houses of the people. However, the civilians had narrow escape at many places,” they said, adding that the Indian Army retaliated effectively at all places to silence the Pakistani guns. Pakistan later claimed that a civilian girl was killed in retaliatory firing by the Indian troops at village Polas in Abbaspur sector of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Reports said that there has been strong resentment among the people of forward areas of PoK against Pakistan army for resorting to mortar shelling unnecessarily, leading to casualties and damages in the Indian retaliation. Reports said that large number of people gathered at Abbaspur and held protests against Pakistan army and civil administration for making their lives miserable on LoC with their acts of unprovoked firing and shelling on the Indian side, which invited strong retaliation from India and, in turn, led to casualties and damages. Reports added that people in Abbaspur continued their “anti-Pakistan protests” for couple of hours till some civil officers reached the spot and persuaded them to disperse.

Again on September 17th night also, Pakistan resumed shelling and firing in forward villages of Arnia sector in Jammu District.Sources said the BSF has been retaliating Pakistan’s unprovoked firing and shelling very effectively as there had been reports that Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT)’s militants have also mixed up with Pakistan army to target the BSF and infiltrate into the Indian territory, adds Daily Excelsior. Also, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) is set to step up efforts to strengthen border security in 2018 amid a surge in ceasefire violations by Pakistan and frequent terrorist strikes in Jammu and Kashmir, reports Live Mint on December 26. In 2017, as many as 61 militant attacks were reported across Jammu and Kashmir. However, the decision to strengthen security along India’s border has been prompted by the more than three-fold jump in violations of a ceasefire agreement by Pakistan in 2017. The western neighbour violated ceasefire 771 times along the Line of Control (LoC) in 2017, compared with 228 violations in the previous year (2016). “With the Doklam stand-off happening this year, these ceasefire violations and Pakistan-orchestrated terror attacks were a third front that kept Indian troops busy. To remove the troops’ focus from Doklam, Pakistan was nudged by China to keep the northern front active. Our troops also responded in equal measure to such violations,” said an unnamed senior intelligence official. Defence experts, however, said that the spurt in attacks by militants as well as ceasefire violations were reflective of Pakistan struggling to keep pace with India’s increased military watch.
