PTI reports that cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) blew up a gram panchayat (village level self-Government institution) office building and a go down in Malkangiri District during a bandh (general shut down) called by the outfit on January 2 against alleged Police excesses. Around 50 armed Maoists attacked the gram panchayat office at Panasput in Chitrakonda area of Malkangiri and drove away those inside before triggering an explosion, Police said. The Maoists also stormed a go down located near the office and blasted it with explosives before disappearing into a nearby forest, they said. Nobody was harmed or injured, they added. Meanwhile, the bandh called by Maoists in Orissa and four other States against alleged Police excesses and the proposed anti-naxal operations had little impact barring stray incidents of tree felling in Malkangiri and disruption of traffic in Rayagada District. Many Government buses stopped plying in Malkangiri and Rayagada Districts, where trees were used to block roads.

Maoists blew up another Government school building in Rehlatur gram panchayat in Sundargarh District, Police said on January 4 (today). About 40 Maoists entered the building of the Middle English School in under K Balang town on January 3 and looted 50 quintals of rice stored there before setting off an explosion. Maoists had blasted four school buildings and a hospital besides two buildings in the gram panchayat last month. About 3,000 to 4,000 villagers have left their homes in panic and were sheltering in camps in K Balang.

A goods train was also derailed in the incident. The CPI-Maoist had called for a 24-hour bandh (general shut down) in Palamau commissionary on January 5 to protest against the alleged custody death of Rajendra Yadav, a resident of Tiladi village in Chattarpur. The bandh affected life in three districts— Latehar, Garhwa and Palamau.

Six Police personnel and a civilian were killed and one Policeman went missing when the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres blew up their vehicle in the Gumla District on January 15, reported Times of India. The Maoists ambushed a truck, in which the Policemen were on patrol, by triggering a blast near Gurdari mines when the vehicle was returning to Bishunpur Police Station, Inspector General of Police V. D. Desmukh said. Assistant Sub-Inspector Shaym Kumar Sinha and the truck driver were among those killed, he said. The others included havildars and constables, he said, adding, one Policeman was missing.

Besides setting ablaze a truck on Grand Trunk Road, near Amas, they set ablaze railway property at Rafiganj and blew cell phone towers under Gaya’s Gurua and Guraru Police Stations. According to Indian Express, a Central reserved Police Force (CRPF) trooper was killed in a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)-triggered pressure bomb blast at Ettegata village on Injaram-Bheji road in the Dantewada District on January 29. The attack took place when a CRPF patrol party was returning from a road opening duty in the naxalite-infested Mukrana forest in the District between 6 to 7 am. "We have rushed helicopters to evacuate the casualties," Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Viswa Ranjan told PTI. The death toll in the attack may rise as many of the personnel have been seriously injured. The CRPF patrol party was totally taken aback by the Maoists who surfaced at a hillock to carry out the attack. Dantewada Superintendent of Police Amresh Mishra said that the Maoists blew up a vehicle carrying the CRPF personnel. The incident took place in the early hours near Chintalnar -Tarmetla village in the District when Maoists attacked a joint team comprising personnel from CRPF, District Forces and Special Police, he said. The team had been camping in interiors of Tarmetla forest for the last three days as part of a combing operation, Mishra said. Four Policemen have been injured in the blast. The Maoists triggered an improvised explosive device blast near Pedakodepal village on National Highway 16, 284 kilometres from State capital Raipur, and fired at the security personnel, Director-General of Police Vishwaranjan said. Seven personnel of 168 Battalion, including the driver, travelling from their company headquarters in Murkinal to the nearby battalion headquarters, were killed. However, one CRPF personal was injured and another missing. “It appears that the Security personnel ignored instructions not to drive through Naxal-infested areas,” State Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar said.

"Two days ago Gaya Police received information about a training camp of Maoists in Hazaribagh District. They could have planned a destructive incident on the basis of this information a special team was formed," said Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Lodh. After a fierce gunfight that continued for two hours, Security Forces finally overpowered the Maoists and destroyed three of their camps. "When the team went there, Maoists opened fire. About 150 rounds of fire were opened and after that the forces retaliated by opening fire on the Maoists. They crawled up the mountain and chased the Maoists, and then blasted three of their camps. Police have received huge cache of arms and ammunitions," the SSP added.

The patrol van was following the car of the Superintendent of Police (SP) who was returning after leading a long range patrolling in Maoist-affected areas. The SP had a providential escape as his vehicle had just passed the blast site few moments earlier. "I was the target of the Maoists, but the landmine went off moments after my car passed the path at Kutmu More," Kuldip Diwedi, the SP, told reporters soon after reaching the headquarters. Jhargram Additional Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar said the raids were launched by eight companies of Central Reserve police Force (CRPF), SAF and State Armed Police following a tip off that two squads of Maoists had gathered in the forests with explosives to perpetrate acts of sabotage. The joint forces retaliated and forced the Maoists to retreat, he said adding none was injured in the exchange. During searches the joint forces seized about 120 kilograms of explosives stacked in two plastic drums and stored under the ground near a water body in the Madhupur forest near Jamboni, which provides easy access to Jharkhand. The explosives included detonators and three landmines, a large number of cartridges besides a single barrel gun, he said.
