The pre-dawn attack occurred at Biramdih station in Purulia, close to the Jharkhand border. Maoists also pasted posters on the walls and pillars on the station premises before fleeing. The posters condemned the "genocide" in Nandigram — where 14 land protesters were killed in March 2007 in clashes with police — and warned the government against setting up special economic zones in the State. An explosive device planted by the Maoists below the tracks was later recovered and defused by the security forces. West Bengal Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said a probe has been ordered.
