Two of the cadres, Ganesh Korram (23) and Lalit Kashyap (22), were carrying a reward of INR 300,000 each on their head and were acting as key Maoist couriers in Bastar region. Besides, Kolsai alias Panku (30), a military platoon member, was carrying INR 200,000 reward, while INR 100,000 each was announced for the arrest of Dhaniram (23) and Folsingh Salaam, who were local operation squad member and head of Maoists’ cultural outfit Chetna Natya Mandli, respectively. "The five cadres surrendered before senior police officials in Bijapur district headquarters citing ill-treatment by senior cadres and disappointment with ideology of the outlawed Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] movement," Bijapur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Indira Kalyan Elesela said. Surrendered Maoists were identified as Hemla Paklu (28), Budhram Kowasi (24), Hemla Pandu (25), Motu Parsa (19) and Hemla Budhram (35), he said. Of them, Paklu, a member of military platoon no. 12 was carrying a reward of INR 200, 000, while INR 100, 000 each was announced for the arrest of militia company commander Budhram and Awapalli militia commander Pandu, he added.

He further said "After the death of Naxal commander Chainu in Chandameta (in Bastar District) on December 25 in a Police encounter, the Naxal movement in this region has diminished considerably and cadres are deciding to surrender. The movement of Security Forces in the interior parts of Lohandiguda has also compelled them to put down their weapons," the police officer added.

"The cadres surrendered before senior police and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) officials citing disappointment with the ideology of Maoists and ill treatment meted out to them by senior leaders," Sukma Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Santosh Singh, said. Those surrendered were identified as Kunjam Lakhma, a medical team member of Jagargunda area committee of Maoists, Dubi Lakhma, head of Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangthan - a frontal wing of Maoists, and four lower rung members - Kawasi Lachhu, Dubi Hunga, Kawasi Kosa and Kawasi Budhra, he added. Sukaru Salaam (22), a native of Manpur area in Rajnandgaon District, surrendered before senior Police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officials at Narayanpur District headquarters, Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Meena said. She was allegedly involved in several Maoist offences, including the attack on SFs in Aundhi area of Rajnandgaon during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, he said, adding that she was carrying a reward of INR 100, 000 on her head. Sukaru was active in Aundhi Local Organisation Squad (LOS) in Rajnandgaon where she fell in love with the squad’s ‘deputy commander’, Bharat. When the senior cadres objected to their relationship, the couple fled and shifted to Koyalibeda in Kanker District, Meena said. They were well aware of the Maoist ‘diktat’ that cadres are not allowed to have children. After giving birth to a baby girl, Sukaru decided to quit the movement to give a better life to her child, he said.

Of them, Phulo Madkami, who was carrying a reward of INR 300,000 on her head, was active as regional committee supply member of the Maoists and a prominent cadre in the region, the SP said. Another cadre, Jibo Kawadi, was carrying a reward of INR 100,000 on his head, while the rest belonged to different lower rank squads of the outfit including Janmilitia, Sangham and Chetna Natya Manch (CNM), a cultural wing of the Maoists, Dash said. Police claimed that with this surrender, Katekalyan Area Committee of Darbha Division of the Maoists, which has allegedly been instrumental in executing several deadly attacks in south Bastar, has collapsed. At least 34 of the surrendered Maoists belong to Mudenar village which comes under Katekalyan area committee of the ultras. With the surrender, it appears that this area committee has completely vanished, the officer said. They all will be provided with facilities as per the surrender and rehabilitation policy, he said, adding 247 Naxals [Left Wing Extremists (LWEs) and their supporters have surrendered in Bastar district in the past three months.

When there was a need of a Maoist, who could speak Odia in Darbha region, she was brought back as CNM commander.Meanwhile, she fell in love with Local Operating Squad (LOS) commander Shankar alias Joga Sori and married him. Though they kept their marital status secret, it came out in open when she conceived. Senior leaders decided to punish her and military company commander Dewa transferred her husband to an unknown place. She waited till the delivery of baby and finding an opportunity, she escaped and surrendered. Kosi says she might have joined Naxalite ranks by choice but now she wants to give a better life to her kid. He was also the part of Naxal team that had ambushed a CRPF searching party at Kasalpada in Chintagufa area in December 2014, killing 14 paramilitary jawans. A native of Bijapur District, Jittu had joined Naxal organisation in 2005, while he was a student of class 8th in a tribal ashram school. It lasted for one hour, during which our forces, comprising the District Reserve Guard (DRG), District force, the Chhattisgarh Armed Force, retaliated promptly. "Altogether 57 Maoist cadres and 297 sympathisers turned themselves in before the government, police and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) officials at Sukma district headquarters. Seventeen of these 57 Maoists were carrying a cash reward on their heads," SP of Sukma, Indira Kalyan Elesela said. Seventeen Maoists surrendered along with firearms, he said. "Cadres are getting increasingly fed up with violent Maoist activities and want to see development in their area," the SP said. He described the move as a good indicator in the conflict-ridden Bastar region. The Maoist supporters belong to Kerlapal, Manjhipara, Patelpara, Potampara, Borguda, Gondpalli Mosalpara, Jeerampal, Badesatti, Pandupara and other villages of the region, the SP said. According to the official, the cadres in their statements said that they decided to move away from the Maoists as they were frustrated with continuous exploitation, atrocities and violence by them. While Bheema was active as ‘deputy commander’ of military platoon 2 in the National Park Area committee of Maoists, Sito was working as ‘section deputy commander’ in the same wing, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) (SIB) Lal Umed Singh said. Those surrendered were identified as Bislal alias Sukhdev Hidko (28), Shamlal alias Kara Komra, Dhaniram Dugga, Budhram Kowasi (24), Mahesh Kumar (35), and the woman cadre Pushpa Anchla (24), said Kotwani.Of them, Sukhdev, ‘commander’ of Section B under Military Platoon no 33, is a key CPI-Maoist member in the region carrying a reward of INR 300,000, he said. While Pushpa was active as member of Chetna Natya Manch (CNM) - the cultural wing of CPI-Maoist, three others were Jan-militia members, the SP added.

As six Naxalites, including a woman, surrendered in Bijapur District on December 29, reports India Today. Citing disappointment with "hollow" Maoist ideology, the Naxalites, two of them carrying cash reward on their heads, turned themselves in before police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials at the District headquarters, a senior Police official said. Of them, the woman ultra - Hemla Munni alias Rambati (25) was a key member of military platoon number 16 of the CPI-Maoist and has been allegedly instrumental in executing several Naxal incidents in the region, he said, adding she was carrying a reward of INR 200,000 on her head. Similarly, Awapalli LOS (local operation squad) member Kakem Nagesh (23), who was among the surrendered, carried cash reward of INR 100,000 on his head, the official said. The four other Naxalites who turned themselves in were Shivram Hemla (25), Korsa Sannu (24), Ramesh Sodhi (25) and Raja Ram Kadati (40). The surrendered rebels were allegedly involved in various crimes including targeting security personnel, triggering blasts, damaging roads and others, he said.
