14 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres surrendered before Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials at Kirandul Police Station in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 7, reports The Times of India. They were disappointed with the ‘hollow Maoist ideology’ and were encouraged by the ‘Lon Varratu’ (return to your home) campaign of the District Police. Among the surrendered cadres, Baman Midiami (35), ‘head’ of the Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (DAKMS) – a Maoist front, and ‘militia commander’ Raju Midiami (30) were carrying rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads, while others were active lower-rung cadres.

Sixteen Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, two of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered to the Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 30, reports The Pioneer. The lower rung cadres who were active in Bacheli and Kirandul areas and surrendered in Kirandul town citing they were impressed by the rehabilitation of their former colleagues, Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava said. With this, 288 Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] have so far given up violence in the district under the 'Lon Varratu' (Return to your home) campaign, launched in June last year, Pallava said. Of the 16, Madkam Hurra (28), a Maoist ‘militia commander’, and Hunga Barsa (35), head of the local unit of the Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (DAKMS), carried rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads, Pallava added. 14 among the surrendered belonged to Madakamiras village. All the 16 were given immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 and will get facilities further as per the government's surrender and rehabilitation policy, the officer said.

Security Forces (SFs) gunned down a senior Communist Part of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commander’ in an exchange of fire in Surnaar forest near Tetam village in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 6, reports The New Indian Express. “A gunfight ensued between the team of Dantewada District Reserve Guards (DRG) and the Maoists in the forested terrain of Surnaar and Tetam. A Maoist identified as Masa Muchaki, 31, a 'jan militia' commander was killed in the exchange of fire. He was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head. There were multiple crimes registered against him,” said Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava. Muchaki was militia command-in-chief of Katekalyan Area Committee in Dantewada.

Of the 13, Lakhma Midiyami, a ‘jan militia commander’, Bheema alias Kamlu Karma, ‘president of DKAMS (Dandakaranya Kisan Adivasi Mazdoor Sangh) – a frontal body of the CPI-Maoist, and Jogi Midiyami carried cash rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads. Another surrendered cadre - Mangal Ram Sodhi, was involved in an attack on the house of Congress leader Awdhesh Gautam at Nakulnar in 2010. The Maoists said they were disappointed by the Maoist ideology, meaningless violence and hardships of forest life in Bastar region.

While three Maoists – Baman Sodhi (22), Hidma Sodhi (22) and Hidma Madvi (20), all lower-rung cadres, were arrested from a forest between Etepal and Jiakodta villages under Kuakonda Police Station limits, a Maoist ‘militia commander’, identified as - Padam Mada (27) was arrested near Medpal village under Aranpur Police Station limits in the District. Mada was wanted in connection with incidents of attack on a Police team, a civilian killing and damaging public property, and carried a reward of INR 100,000 on his head.

Four of them were arrested from two villages under the Gangaloor Police Station limits and three from the Basaguda Police Station limits in the District. Vishnu Tati (28) and Barsa Mangu (29), were arrested from Palnar village in Gangaloor on March 9. Cadres Moti Tati (32) and Paklu Tati (36) were arrested in Todka village also from Gangaloor on March 8. The remaining three cadres – Sodhi Singa (21), Suresh Barsa (27) and Potam Budhram (27) were arrested from Basaguda on March 8.

Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava said, the fighting took place at a forest near Bade Gudra village under Kuakonda Police Station limits when the District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel were on an anti-Maoist drive. After the exchange of fire, the bodies of the two Maoists along with a 9 mm pistol, a country-made revolver and a five kilograms Improvised Explosive Device (IED) were recovered from the spot, the SP said. Out of the three Maoists, Aayta Kohrami, who was active as a ‘militia commander’, was carrying a reward of INR 100,000 on his head, while the two other cadres, identified as Uika Somdu (23) and Kartam Mahendra (22), were working as militia members. Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava, said, “Based on the intelligence inputs about the movement of Maoists in the region, a team of District Reserve Guards (DRG) left on a search operation. There was an encounter at around 6 pm at the hilly terrain of Dholkal and Pedapal. Three Maoists were killed. The bodies have been identified.” The bodies of three Maoists, identified as Birju Kakem, Jaggu Kakem and Ajay Poyami, were recovered from the site. Eight Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were arrested from a forest near Morpalli village under Chintalnar Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh early on November 6 (today), reports republicworld.com. Among the arrested were Kawasi Raju alias Santu, known as a 'battalion member', and Kalmu Mada, a 'militia company commander', Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma, informed. The two Maoists had a reward of INR 800,000 and INR 500,000 on themselves. The identities of the other six Maoists are yet to be ascertained. SP, Sharma stated that an FIR has been lodged against all eight accused and the Armed Forces have recovered explosive devices and equipment. As per Police, 35 detonators, six gelatin rods, two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), batteries, wires and other unlicensed objects and tools were seized from their possession. "IEDs, explosives & objectionable literature were recovered from their possession," the SP added.

Acting on a tip-off, the three were arrested from their native village Dharmavaram under Pamed Police Station limits when a joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) and local Police was on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing extremism, LWE] operation, an official said, adding, ''They have been identified as Madvi Pojja, a militia section commander, and Velkam Malla alias Mallaya and Gatpalli Mukta alias Muthaiya, both lower rung functionaries. They are involved in incidents of loot, setting ablaze construction vehicles and machines, firing on security personnel between 2019 to 2021.''

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) militia ‘commander’, identified as Basta Bheema, who was involved in at least nine deadly attacks on Security Forces (SFs) was killed in an encounter in a forest near Tadmetla village in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on November 26, reports Times Now News. Bheema, the slain Maoist, was carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on his head. The gunfight took place around 7 pm in a forest near Tadmetla village when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) of Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA)'s 201 battalion was out on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation, Sukma Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma said. When the patrolling team was cordoning off the forest near Tadmetla, Maoists fired on them, SP, Sharma said, adding, after the guns fell silent, the body of Basta Bheema was recovered from the spot. Bheema was involved in several incidents including the Minpa attack in March 2020, where 17 security personnel were killed, and the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in November last year in Chintalnar area in which a CoBRA assistant commandant was killed and nine others sustained injuries, Sharma added.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres reportedly set a mobile tower of the Reliance Jio company on fire in Tarawali village in Pakhanjur area under Chhote Bethiya Police Station limits in Kanker District of Chhattisgarh on November 27, reports The Free Press Journal. The Jio tower which was set on fire was installed a few months ago in Tarawali village in Pakhanjur area in Kanker District, the Police said. It has been informed that the incident took place during the ‘Bharat Bandh’ (all India general shut down strike) call given by Maoists to register a strong protest against the encounter carried out by Maharashtra Police in Gadchiroli, in which 27 Maoists, including the key fugitive Milind Teltumbde were killed. It has been informed that on November 27, a group of 15-armed Maoist ‘jan militia’ (People’s army of the Maoists) came and set ablaze the control unit on fire. Kanker, Superintendent of Police (SP), Shalabh Sinha confirmed that the incident took place on November 27 in the Chhote Bethiya Police Station limits. At least 16 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres surrendered before the Police in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on December 4, reports ndtv.com. Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava said, the cadres turned themselves in before Police officials in Dantewada, located around 400 kilometres from the State capital Raipur, under the Police's rehabilitation drive 'Lon Varratu' (term in local Gondi dialect for return to your home/village) campaign launched by the Police in June last year. Of the 16 surrendered Maoists, ‘Jan Militia’ (people’s army of Maoists) member Joga Kunjam (26) was allegedly involved in several Maoist incidents, including an attack on security personnel in the district, SP, Pallava said, adding the Maoists will be rehabilitated as per the State Government's Policy.
