On January 4, six persons, including four Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation employees, were arrested near Veltur village in the Mahabubnagar district while they were illegally transporting weapons to be delivered to left-wing extremists (also known as Naxalites) of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist). The police seized an unspecified number of arms and ammunition, include 1000 cartridges, air rifles, pistols and a Taiwan-made GPS (global positioning system) set from them. According to district police chief, Vikram Singh Mann, the accused confessed that the ‘District Committee Secretary’ of CPI-Maoist, Sambashivudu, paid them Rupees 3 lakhs to buy arms and ammunition. They had close links with the Naxalite outfit and had been supplying arms and ammunition for the last four years, Singh added.

A woman Naxalite of the Gundlakamma local guerilla squad of the CPI (Maoist), identified as Lathakka, was reportedly killed by the police in an encounter at J. Pullalacheruvu village in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh on January 8. It is the first encounter in Prakasam district after the State Government initiated peace talks with the Naxalites. The police also recovered one 303 rifle, one 410 musket, two claymore mines, 12 detonators and eight kitbags from the incident site. Meanwhile, the ‘North-East Area Commander’ of the CPI (Maoist), Sagar, alleged that the police had killed Lathakka in a fake encounter, and held the Giddalur Congress-I legislator, Pagadala Ramaiah, responsible for it.

Papers were found showing their plans to attack them through directional mines. The compact discs recovered from the spot originated from China, Cuba and Algiers. Police subsequently recovered three bodies from the encounter site. A tapancha (locally made revolver), two kit bags, some used cartridges of 9 mm carbine along with revolutionary material were also recovered. In another encounter, on the hillocks of Urukonda village in Midjil mandal, a Maoist, suspected to be the member of an action team, was killed.
