Police fired teargas and fired gun shots in air to disperse the protesters. Clashes between the two sides continued for several hours and few persons were reported to be injured. Following the clashes, the cordon and search operation in the Tarigam village was called off and sources said that militants managed to flee from the cordon. Clashes also erupted at Qoimoh area of the District after SFs launched a cordon and search operation following information that the militants who fled Tarigam have taken shelter in nearby Makhdoom Mohalla locality of Qoimoh. SFs called off the operation at Qoimoh following clashes. Minor stone-pelting clashes were also reported from Kakpora area of Pulwama District. However, the situation there was brought under control by Police.

Security Forces (SFs) arrested 12 persons on stone pelting charges during which 15 persons were injured in Pulwama town in Pulwama District, reports Daily Excelsior on February 26. A shutdown was observed in Pulwama town amid stonethrowing clashes against arrest of a shopkeeper on February 25. A Police official said the arrested shopkeeper, Bilal Ahmad Mir, is a stonepelter and was held on charges of stonethrowing in the town. Since morning hours, protesters came out of their houses and pelted stones on SFs in the town. The clashes continued throughout the day and security men lobbed dozens of teargas shells to disperse the rockhurlers. The protesters were seeking release of the arrested shopkeeper. Eight SF personnel were among 15 persons who were injured in these clashes. Police later detained 12 persons on charges of stone pelting during the clashes in Pulwama.

At least two militants and one Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police constable were killed while an Army major and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured during the ongoing encounter between Security Forces (SFs) and militants which started on March 4 evening in Shikargah in Tral in Pulwama District, reports Daily Excelsior on March 5 (today). According to reports, the house where the militants were hiding has been demolished by the SFs. The identity of the militants hasn’t been revealed yet. However, at least two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terrorists, including the right hand man of slain Hizbul ‘commander’ Burhan Wani, Sabzar Bhat, were believed to be trapped in the encounter, sources said.As the news about the encounter spread in the area, a law and order problem erupted, with civilians pelting stone at the SFs, adds Daily Excelsior. One assailant hit an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and snatched his AK-47 rifle before disappearing into the crowd. A separate operation is on to recover the weapon. A top officer said, “Security forces were stopped by civilians. Resistance was shown. We had to rush in reinforcement. An ASI of CRPF was injured his weapon snatched by (the) belligerent crowd.”

The Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), the Police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)’s 183 Battalion cordoned off the area around 10 p.m. on March 6. A tipoff suggested movement of LashkareToiba (LeT) militants in the area. Police sources said the operation was called off at night when mosques in the area started blaring profreedom songs and residents from many adjacent villages marched towards the operation site.

A fifteen year old teenager, identified as Amir Nazir was killed by a bullet-hit when he was throwing stones to disrupt the anti-terror operations of Security Forces (SFs) against two hiding Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists at Padgampora in Pulwama District on March 9 morning, Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Shesh Paul Vaid said, reports The Times of India. Amir Nazir was part of a mob pelting stones when a bullet hit him in the neck. The incident happened despite Army chief Bipin Rawat's recent warning against those attacking SFs during anti-militancy operations of "tough action". The SFs came under intense attack from stone pelters, which forced them to open fire, leaving several injured. As SATP reported on March 9, two LeT militants, identified as Jehangir Ganai and Mohammad Shafi Wagay alias Ehsan, both locals from Koel in south Kashmir were also killed in the encounter.

Two militants were killed in a fierce gun battle broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants in Padgampora area of Pulwama District on March 9 (today) morning, reports The Times of India. "The slain militants have been identified as Jehangir Ganai and Mohammad Shafi alias Sher Gujri," a senior CRPF officer said, adding that Ganai was involved in the killing of a local Policeman last year (2016). SFs from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police have started search operations and cordoned off the area where two-three militants of the group were holed up even. Army was deployed to carry out combing operationsMeanwhile, locals hit the streets and started pelting stones on SFs near the encounter site, adds Daily Excelsior. Additional SFs have been rushed to the area, where locals are pelting stones to disrupt the operation. Sources said there could be two to three militants in the area. Ahead of bypolls, Police have arrested at least 24 persons accused of stonepelting in multiple raids at Pulwama and Kulgam Districts of South Kashmir, reports Daily Excelsior on March 22. Sources said Police raided Murana and Kangan villages of Pulwama District during nocturnal hours and detained at least 21 persons, mostly youths. Police said all the detained persons were involved in stonepelting. Locals, however, alleged that among the detained persons include relatives of some boys who have gone underground to evade arrest. Meanwhile, three youths were also detained from Budroo and Chawalgam villages of neighbouring Kulgam District. Sources said the trio was detained over their alleged involvement in stoning recent election rally of ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that was held at Chawalgam in the District.

A Police spokesman said: “Students of different colleges protested at some places in Kashmir valley today. While at most of the places the students protested inside their college premises, at few places in Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam the students assembled on the roads and indulged in stone pelting thus disrupting the movement of general people and traffic on busy roads. As the SFs laid siege to the village, the militants hiding tried to flee and fired at the SFs, triggering a brief gunfight in which two militants were killed. Soon after the news of the killing of militants spread in the area, the area observed shut down and protests broke out. People tried to reach to the encounter site and pelted stones on SFs who retaliated with aerial firing and tear smoke. Over a dozen youth were injured one among them is critical as a bullet hit him in the chest. He was identified as Asif Ahmad of Lassipora Pulwama. The militants have been identified as Shariq Ahmad of Gulzarpur Awantipore and Showkat Ahmed alias Shabir of Mehand Anantnag, who had joined militant ranks this year only. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on September 5 arrested two persons, photojournalist Kamran Yusuf, working for a local English daily newspaper from Pulwama and Javed Ahmad Bhat from Kulgam for their involvement in instigating youth to indulge in stone pelting and protests, reports Daily Excelsior. According to the NIA, Bhat and Yusuf were involved in stone pelting incidents besides organizing groups of youths who would throw stones at security personnel involved in counter insurgency operations. Yusuf, who had often been warned by the local Police, was allegedly mobilizing the youth and clicking their pictures for circulation in local and national newspapers. The arrests came just a day before Kashmir Bar Association Mian Qayoom was scheduled to appear before the NIA at agency’s New Delhi headquarters in connection with a case of terror funding in which 10 separatists and others have already been arrested. Report added that a large number of Twitter and Facebook accounts and Groups have been blocked, or were in the process of being blocked, after 6386 telephone users were identified by the NIA, which were being used for fanning extremism and unrest in the Kashmir valley. Sources said that nearly 125 Twitter handlers/tweets, 79 WhatsApp Groups and accounts and 6386 mobile telephones have been blocked, which were spreading highly inflammatory information pertaining to happenings in Kashmir including anti-terror operations and drive against terror funding and hawala operations. The Union Ministry for Information Technology had used Section 69A of Information Technology Act, 2000 to issue directions for blockade of accounts while the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) has used the powers vested with it to issue similar directions.

The protests which were called by Valley’s religious and separatist outfits two days ago prompted the authorities to impose restrictions in certain parts of downtown city Srinagar. Hundreds of people soon after culmination of Friday congregational prayers hit streets in Lal Chowk area of Anantnag District and resorted to stone-pelting on Police. Witnesses said the Police retaliated by firing teargas canisters but irate protesters cornered them at multiple places and thrashed many of them including an officer while many other cops managed to save themselves.A group of youth attacked an armoured vehicle of Police outside District Magistrate Anantnag’s office and damaged its glasses and window panes. The Policemen already abandoned the vehicle and later the protesters set the vehicle on fire. A Police spokesman in a statement said “some miscreants from a mob started pelting stones on the police and security forces deployment at Lal Chowk in Anantnag” today after Friday prayers. “These miscreants also set a police vehicle on fire. The miscreants were chased off by using mild force,” he said. The spokesman said six Police personnel including two officers identified as Deputy Superintendent (Headquarters) Anantnag Mohammad Yousuf, Sub Inspector Junaid Ahmad, Head Constable Gurdeep Singh, Constable Shabir Ahmad, Constable Bilal Ahmad and Constable Javaid Ahmad were injured in today’s Anantnag violence and they were shifted to hospital for treatment. Police said a case was registered and “investigation was set into motion to identify these miscreants”.Protests against violence on Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State of Myanmar broke out at dozens of places in Srinagar city and other Districts of the Valley. Police said the protests remained largely peaceful and only few incidents of stone-pelting were reported. In summer capital here, the protests broke out at Khanyar, Maisuma, Lal Chowk, Safa Kadal, Nowshehra, Hyderpora, Shalimar and few other places. The incidents of stone-pelting were reported from Safa Kadal and Nowshehra. All the four districts – Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag and Kulgam – of South Kashmir witnessed post-Friday protests and rallies against Myanmar. The protests remained peaceful and no violent incident was reported, the Police said.In North and Central Kashmir, protests were held at Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Budgam and Baramulla after Friday prayers but all of them concluded peacefully.

Earlier SATP reported that two LeT militants were killed by Security Forces (SFs) in an encounter in Pulwama District on October 14. According to sources, SFs cordoned off Litter village in after inputs about the presence of militants in the village. The militants were hiding in the house of former militant Pintu Malik and when the SFs encircled the house, the holed up militants opened fire on the SFs resulting in an encounter lasted for over an hour in which two militants were killed.Onecivilian, identified as Gulzar Ahmad Mir was also killed and four others were injured as clashes broke out between protesters and SFds in Litter area of Pulwama District after killing of two LeT militants. SFs used teargas, pellets and fired some gun shots in which one civilian was killed and four others were injured. The slain was hit by a bullet and succumbed in hospital. However, a Police spokesman said that the civilian was hit during cross firing.Large number of people attended the funeral of both the militants in their respective villages. Major parts of Pulwama and Shopian Districts observed shutdown. The authorities also downgraded mobile Internet services to 2G in both the Districts. Police said that the day passed off peacefully.

Sources said that two HM militants Zahoor Ahmad and Mohammad Zahid were hiding in the village when troops cordoned it off. Both of them are locals and Zahoor was with Territorial Army and early this year he fled from an Army camp along with a weapon to join militancy. However, as the cordon of the village was laid at around 1.30 p.m residents pelted stones on the SFs, who, in return, fired teargas to disperse them and the ding dong battles continued for four hours.
