A day after HM posters put up in Pulwama in Kashmir provoked the youth in Kashmir to “fight for Islam, not Kashmir,” posters have been put up by the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in the neighbouring District of Anantnag asking the people not to vote in the upcoming local polls, reports Times Now on March 18. The posters have warned people to stay away from the election process and not to cast their vote. The J&K Police have taken cognizance of these threats and have launched a probe to check the veracity of these posters. “The terror outfits have trying their best to ensure terror in the valley through the posters but not much heed should be paid into it,” Colonel (retired) VN Thapar said. “The government shouldn't bring its own guard down; rather it should ensure swift action.”

In third incident of its kind during preceding 24 hours in South Kashmir, militants on May 3 broad daylight raided two banks in Pulwama District and decamped with cash worth lakhs of rupees, reports Daily Excelsior. Following these twin incidents, Police claimed that LashkareToiba (LeT) is involved in these robberies and said they have identified three of its militants behind today’s (May 3) bank raids on whom heads it also announced cash reward. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rayees Bhat said, in the afternoon on May 3, a group of five militants entered Ellaquai Dehati Bank Wahibugh, which is some 810 kilometers away from Pulwama town. “First they threatened some shopkeepers there and kept them hostage. And after this, they entered into the bank where they harassed bank employees at gunpoint and also beat them,” he said. The SP said that the militants fled with INR 4.92 lakh from Ellaquai Dehati Bank at Wahibugh and they concluded the raid in around 34 minutes. The militants, before the arrival of Security Forces (SFs), managed to escape from the village in the same car they had arrived. The SP said that after some twoandahalf hours, another bank, a local unit of Jammu and Kashmir Bank, was looted at Nehama village of Kakapora area in Pulwama District. “Five militants were also involved in it. Four militants barged into the bank and another was with the car. From there, they decamped around Rs. 1.49 lakh rupees,” he said. Earlier on May 2, unidentified gunmen had barged into the Yaripora branch of Ellaquai Dehati Bank at Kadder in neighbouring Kulgam District and taken away INR 65,000. The SP Pulwama District, which is on edge since past year, said so far, the name of LeT has come to fore before Police during its investigation. The SP while referring to May 3’s robberies, said “The name of Majid Mir of Kakapora, in particular has come to fore, we have identified him. Some other people with him were masked but one militant from Padgampora (Awantipora) namely Shabir Dar, he too has been identified. It clarifies that Lashkar was behind these robberies.” A statement issued later in the evening on May 3 by Police said that another militant namely Arif Dar alias Rehan alias Arif Manager of Lelhar village of Kakapora in Pulwama District is also involved in today’s (May 3) bank robberies. Meanwhile, following series of attacks on Police personnel, snatching of their rifles and looting of banks, Union Home Minister (UHM) Rajnath Singh is said to have directed Jammu and Kashmir Police and Paramilitary forces operating in the Valley to be “proactive” and hit the militants before giving them a chance to strike, reports Daily Excelsior.

Security agencies are not ruling out the possibility of the banned Islamic State (ISIS) trying to create a base in the Kashmir valley, noting that internet chats and establishing of contacts with possible handlers in Syria and Iraq by some youths have grown in the last six months, reports Daily Excelsior on May 7. Officials in the security establishment, who are not authorised to speak to the media, said on condition of anonymity that there have been small pockets in the Valley from where some youths are trying to get in touch with one or more handlers in Syria and Iraq. Last month, two masked gunmen appeared at the grave of a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terrorist in Pulwama during which they asked the gathering to follow the rules laid down by Taliban and ISIS and not support or raise slogans in favour of Pakistan. They gave fiery speeches for over three minutes in which they spoke about pan-Islamisation and the importance of having Shariat as a law, the officials said. While militant outfits including United Jehad Council, a conglomerate of terror outfits based out of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), as well as the local unit of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen were quick to downplay the incident, security officials viewed it with more seriousness. The agencies felt if the growing influence of ISIS was not checked, it could be detrimental to the situation in the Valley. The officials said that the activities on the internet from the Valley to some accounts in Syria and Iraq have been tracked during last one year.
