Three terrorists of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), including a hardcore terrorist, Zubair Afghani, were killed in an encounter in the Naika Majari forests, Gursai area, Mendhar, on March 10. Media reports have indicated that Zubair Afghani was involved in a number of civilian killings, besides attacks on the security force personnel in different areas of Poonch district, during the last six months. Three AK rifles, five magazines, 100 kg of RDX, three RPG rounds, a radio set and three pouches were recovered from the encounter site. Official sources added that the RDX had been dumped by the terrorists in the same forest area for fabricating Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Five unidentified terrorists—four in Salhutri area of Mendhar tehsil and one in Surankote of Poonch district, were killed in separate encounters with the security forces (SFs) on April 7. Four AK rifles with ammunition, one wireless set and six grenades were also recovered from the encounter site. In a separate incident, a security force personnel, two unidentified terrorists and a civilian were killed in a grenade attack by unidentified terrorists at the Barbarshah security camp in Srinagar. Three SF personnel and two civilians were also injured in the attack. A Special Police Officer (SPO) was also killed by the terrorists in Kalakote tehsil of Rajouri. The attempt to blow off a grid station near Gangoo-Lajoora in south Kashmir through an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted by unidentified terrorists was foiled by the SFs. Meanwhile, four members of a family managed to escape from the captivity of unidentified terrorists in Banihal tehsil of Doda district. They had earlier been abducted on April 5.

Official sources said SFs had launched a search operation in Toti Gali near Chambayar forests, Hari Budha area, Surankote, after securing information on terrorists’ presence. An encounter between the two sides ensued when the terrorists commenced firing on approaching columns of SFs. Resultantly, two terrorists and two SF personnel were killed. Rathore reportedly hailed from the Bagh district in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). A Pika gun, three magazines, 80 ammunition rounds and a wireless set were recovered from his possession. Rathore’s dead associate was identified as Hamza Turkey, a front-ranking terrorist of the Al Jehad, hailing from Pakistan. According to media reports, security forces (SFs) on July 12 killed seven hardcore terrorists in the Bafliaz area of Surankote in Poonch district during an encounter. Two SF personnel were also killed while another was injured during the encounter. All slain terrorists were reported to be foreign mercenaries. Unconfirmed reports said that three civilians were also killed in the exchange of firing but there was no official confirmation of this report. SFs had launched a search operation in Ranjiti Dhok and Hill Kaka in upper reaches of Bafliaz area of Surankote based on information that a group of foreign mercenaries was hiding in the two villages for the past one week and were reportedly planning to carry out a major terrorist attack in the next couple of days. The terrorists having observed movement of the SF personnel were attempting to escape towards a forest area when they were challenged and asked to surrender by the SFs. However, the terrorists commenced heavy firing on the SF personnel, who retaliated. Simultaneously, a separate team of SFs intercepted another group of terrorists in the adjoining Hill Kaka area in Bafliaz and engaged them in an encounter. Seven terrorists, including five terrorists were killed in Ranjiti Dhok while two others were killed in Hill Kaka. Two SF personnel were also killed during the encounter while another was injured. The SFs also recovered four AK rifles, one Pika gun, one sniper rifle, one pistol, two wireless sets, five hand grenades, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) weighing 2.5 kg, 200 AK rounds and 10 magazines from the encounter site. Even as SF personnel were nearing the terrorist hideout, they were attacked from inside, said official sources. In the ensuing encounter, two JeM terrorists were killed. In the ensuing encounter, while two terrorists of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) group were killed, two others of the group managed to escape. Among the slain terrorists was Mohammed Yaseen Malik alias Shamas-ud-Din, an HM ‘area commander’. Security force (SF) personnel on December 26 foiled a massive infiltration attempt by a group of Pakistan trained terrorists and killed six of them on the Line of Control (LoC) near Balnoi, Mendhar area of Poonch sector. Two SF personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, were also killed during the operation. Brigadier V K Patil told media-personnel at the encounter site that Pakistani troops were pushing groups of heavily armed infiltrators to the Indian side of the LoC. He also said some more infiltrators were trapped by SFs and were still engaged in the operation, when last reports came in. Five AK-47 rifles, four grenades, 10 magazines, an unspecified quantity of ammunition, wireless sets, eatables, medicines and some Indian and Pakistani currency were recovered from their possession. The slain foreign mercenaries are suspected to be from the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) group as discovered from the recovered documents.

Three terrorists, including an exfiltrator, were killed by security forces (SFs) in separate encounters in Surankote and Bandi Chechian on December 30. Official sources said SFs stormed a terrorist hideout in Borivalli village, Surankote area of Poonch district, and in the ensuing encounter, two terrorists of the Hizb-e-Islami outfit were killed. Recoveries made from their possession included two AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, 209 rounds of ammunition, two sophisticated wireless sets and six hand grenades. Some documents of the Hizb-e-Islami, a Pakistan based terrorist outfit, were also recovered from the hideout. Sources added that both the terrorists were operating in Surankote for the past year and were involved in a series of subversive activities, including attacks on security forces and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts on the Surankote-Poonch road.

Five persons, including three front ranking terrorists, an Army Captain and a young girl, were killed while four others, including three members of a family, were injured in an encounter in Kalali Morha, Surankote area of Poonch district, on December 31. Official sources said a group of terrorists with automatic weapons and grenades attacked an Army patrol in Kalali Morha and later escaped. However, they were traced in Marha village after a search operation by security forces (SFs). The terrorists are reported to have held some civilians hostages and used them as human shield to escape again. Even as SFs succeeded in segregating most of the civilians from the terrorists, some others remained in captivity. In the ensuing encounter, while three terrorists, an Army Captain and a young girl were killed, four civilians, including three members of a family, held hostage by the terrorists, were injured. Five other terrorists of the group managed to escape towards a forest area and were being chased by SFs, when reports last came in. The slain terrorists were believed to be foreign mercenaries of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) group. Three AK-56 rifles, seven magazines, 108 rounds of ammunition, a wireless set, 11 hand grenades, a large number of detonators, explosive devices and accessories were recovered from the encounter- site.
