Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch District on January 1, but there were no casualties or damage on the Indian side, reports Daily Excelsior. “There was firing by Pakistani troops from 9 am along LoC in Shahpur sub sector of Poonch district today (January 1),” official sources said. The Indian troops retaliated and there was a brief exchange of firing, they said, adding there were no casualties. The firing took place in Shahpur sector of Poonch for about an hour. There was slight panic among the people during the firing but it subsided as bullets stopped within an hour. Earlier, on December 30, 2016, a civilian was killed as Pakistan army indulged in heavy cross-border firing targeting Indian positions and civilian areas along the LoC in Poonch sector, prompting the Indian side to give a befitting reply. The 2003 India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement has virtually become redundant with a whopping over 300 incidents of firing and shelling along LoC and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) by Pakistani troops that resulted in death of 27 people, including 14 security personnel, since the surgical strike on terrorist launch pads in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on September 28-29 in which over 50 Pakistani militants and army personnel were killed.

A GREF vehicle, engaged in construction work at Balnoi Forward was directly hit by a mortar shell fired by the Pakistan army, leading to injuries to four workers including the driver, one of whom, identified as Mohammad Parwaiz later succumbed to his injuries. A Border Security Force (BSF) Havaldar, identified as Mohammad Nizam-ud-Din was also injured in the shelling.

Indian Army launched yet another major offensive against Pakistani troops at Bhimber and Battal sectors along Line of Control (LoC) between twin border Districts of Poonch and Rajouri killing six Pakistani troopers and injuring five on June 1 afternoon, reports Daily Excelsior. This was third fierce retaliatory action undertaken by the Indian troops exactly during past one month. Some of the Pakistani posts and bunkers were also destroyed in retaliatory firing by the Indian troops, sources said, adding that mortar shelling and firing by the Pakistani troops stopped immediately after Indian forces undertook retaliatory action. Pakistan also claimed that their one civilian was killed in retaliatory firing by the Indian Army. Sources also said that major counter attack against the Pakistan army, which was undertaken this afternoon from Bhimber and Battal sectors of Rajouri and Poonch districts, was necessitated to decimate Pakistani posts, which were raining mortars on Indian civilian areas and were also preparing to facilitate infiltration attempts into the Indian territory.

India, on June 11, launched another major offensive against Pakistan after latter’s Army targeted defence locations and civilian areas along Line of Control (LoC) in three sectors in twin border Districts ofPoonch and Rajouri and also activated International Border (IB) in Ramgarh sector of Samba District, reports Daily Excelsior. At least nine posts and bunkers of Pakistan Army were destroyed opposite Krishna Ghati and Nowshera sectors in retaliatory fire by the troops while Pakistan claimed civilian casualties on their side.Official sources said that heavy mortar shelling and firing by Pakistan Army on the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch Districts, which began late June 10 night and continued till June 11 afternoon, was a clear indication that troops across the LoC were instructed to keep pot boiling on the LoC. However, they said, the Indian troops, who were anticipating misadventures by Pakistan following the visit of Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa to the LoC, retaliated Pakistan shelling and firing very effectively. According to sources, at least nine posts and bunkers of Pakistan army have been razed to ground across Krishna Ghati and Nowshera sectors in retaliatory firing by the Indian troops. Pakistan claimed civilian casualties, both fatal and non-fatal, on their side. Sources didn’t rule out fatalities on part of Pakistan army in destruction of their posts but there were no exact numbers.Significantly, Pakistan Army activated three major sectors along LoC including Krishna Ghati, Bhimber Gali and Nowshera in Rajouri and Poonch Districts on June 11, just a day after General Bajwa visited Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and some forward posts on the LoC, where he inter-acted with Field Commanders and jawans.

Indian troops launched a major counter offensive against Pakistan on August 27 mid-night after latter targeted civilian areas in various parts of Poonch sector in Poonch District, leading to heavy damages across the Line of Control (LoC) including five fatal casualties, two of them Pakistani Army personnel, apart from nearly a dozen injuries and destruction of forward posts and bunkers, reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said that the troops launched massive assault on Pakistani troops to silence their guns, which were targeting civilian population causing heavy losses across the LoC. Pakistan officially admitted its three fatal casualties and injuries to several others and lodged protest with India. According to sources, two Pakistan army personnel were among five persons dead on Pakistani side while eight to 10 others including troopers were injured. Several Pakistani posts and bunkers suffered extensive damages in retaliatory shelling and firing by the troops. Majority of casualties and damages of Pakistan took place in their Nezapir sector on the LoC, which follows opposite Shahpur sector of Poonch District, which was targeted by Pakistan army on August 27th evening, leading to injuries to five civilians including a woman, who were undergoing treatment in the hospital. However, officially, Pakistan only named its three civilians killed in the firing as 32-year-old Naveed and 25 year old Ansar, both brothers and their sister Asma (20). Sources said that at least two Pakistan army personnel were killed and some others were injured in retaliatory firing by the Indian side in Nezapir sector. However, as usual, Pakistan didn’t name its army casualties. Few Pakistan army personnel were among those injured.
