The Cricket World Cup is facing threat as 29 trained militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) have entered the country through the border, Intelligence agencies have warned, reports Times of India. According to sources, among the militants there are cadres of Indian Mujahideen (IM) as well. The militants have been asked to target cricket teams and venues of matches. Mumbai - where World Cup final will be played on April 2 - is reportedly a prime target. According to sources, the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) has provided these terrorists with a list of venues where matches will be held. The terrorists might do a recce of the stadium or the route of the team bus they plan to target. "We have stepped up the security at the stadium as well as the hotels where the teams are staying. Information related to movement of players is being kept secret. The special cell is keeping an eye on all suspicious movements in the city," said an unnamed senior Delhi Police officer.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) have been put on high alert following threatening letters, written in Hindi, and received by the station superintendents of Karnal and Yamunanagar railway stations in Haryana, The Hindu reported on May 17., the sender identified himself as Karim Ansari, an ‘area commander’ of the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). Besides threatening to blow up the two railway stations, the letter also said that terrorists would target Jammu to avenge the killing of Osama bin Laden. Although GRP authorities did not rule out the possibility of the letters being the handiwork of miscreants masquerading as militants, they made an additional deployment of forces on the two stations.

Two letters received by the Police in Punjab on May 23 that threatened that Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) will blow up key temples in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh on June 5 to avenge the killing of al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, reports PTI. One of these letters warned Hindus against undertaking pilgrimage to Amarnath cave and Mata Vaishno Devi shrines in Jammu and Kashmir. SP Kamaljeet Singh Dhillon said he had been given the letters which were first received by the Mahant (Chief priest) of local Sheetla Mata Mandir Kamal Kishor. Another letter threatened that eight important temples of Himachal Pradesh and several important temples of Punjab, including Hanuman Garhi Madir, Sheetla Mata Mandirs of Phagwara and Kapurthala, Shri Kali Mata Mandir of Patiala and Durgiana Mandir of Amritsar would be targeted with bombs. The letters claimed that LeT militants had already entered Punjab. The letters also warned that certain prominent Hindu leaders were on the target of LeT and that there would be large scale bloodshed of Hindus and Sikhs. They especially mentioned the names of Shiv Sena Presidents of Kapurthala, Patiala and Amritsar districts.

Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju on June 4 (today) warned that India would likely retaliate if another terror attack on its soil is linked to members of Pakistan’s security apparatus, reports Dawn. Pallam Raju said at a regional security conference in Singapore that self-restraint would be hard to justify to the Indian people if there were another attack similar to the one in Mumbai in 2008 (also known as 26/11) that killed more than 160 people. India has long suspected that members of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) were involved in the Mumbai attack, though the Pakistan Government has denied the allegations.

The report also says that the terror groups are training militants to scale the walls of the dam and to swim under water. This report has been sent to the Himachal Pradesh Government and the IB has advised the State Government to tighten security around the structure.

Uttar Pradesh Police is probing two mysterious calls that asked a meat trader in Meerut and a farmer in Baghpat to plant bombs, according to Times of India. Both the calls have been traced to Iran but routed through the US, an official said. The first call was received by Hashim Ilahi, a meat trader in Ismail Nagar locality of Meerut city, about 400 kilometres from Lucknow on July 13. Two days later, on July 15, a similar call was received by Vikas, a young farmer living in Soop village in neighbouring Baghpat District, said state Special Director General of Police Brij Lal. Both Vikas and Hashim claimed to have been offered huge amounts of money to plant explosives and bombs in different parts of Meerut city. "They made it a point to promptly inform the police about the calls, following which the matter was referred to the Special Task Force (STF) which is now looking into both the cases," said Lal. Hashim told Police that the caller told him that he had been handpicked because his phone number ended with '786', regarded as auspicious in Islam. He said he was offered INR 20 million to carry out the mission.
