Police said the two constables were passing by in a bicycle when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by the wayside at Naoremthong Khullem Leikai under Lamphel Police Station exploded. The IED was detonated by suspected militants using a remote control device, they added. No outfit has claimed responsibility so far.

Unidentified assailants hurled nine petrol bombs at the resident of Tamenglong Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Luikham in Tamenglong District on January 10, reports The Assam Tribune. Out of nine, five bomb exploded, but no injuries were reported. According to the report, the guards at the residence of M Luikham opened several rounds of fire in the air to ward off the attackers. The identity of the attackers is not yet confirmed, as no militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Two Assam Rifles (AR) personnel Killed and several others were injured when suspected militants attacked an AR vehicle escorting tourists in Tinsukia District on January 22, reports The Times of India. Militants lobbed several grenades targeting the vehicle at Jagun 12th Mile Barabasti on National Highway-53 bordering the District in the run up to Republic Day, a defence spokesman said. The AR vehicle and three vehicles of tourists returning from the Pangsau festival have been damaged in grenade explosions, the spokesman added. The Pangsau Festival is held along the Indo-Myanmar border in the area.

Later, two live IED were recovered on January 23. The militant ambush at Jagun in Tinsukia District of Assam on January 22 had claimed the lives of two Assam Rifles troopers and two unidentified militants.

All total seven bombs were exploded by the Independent faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) militant, during the day of celebration of India’s Republic Day on January 26 in different places of Sivasagar, Charideo, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh Districts, reports The Telegraph. However no casualties were reported. According to the Police sources low intensity Improvised Explosive Device (IED) were used in the blasts. Earlier, on January 26, the four bomb blasts in Charideo and Dibrugarh District were reported in SATP. According to the sources, in Sibsagar District the blast took place in Majpani area and in Tinsukia District two blasts took place at Sisimi village and Sukan pukhuri area.

Suspected militants of the Independent faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) triggered four blasts within a span of 45 minutes in Upper Assam’s Charaideo and Dibrugarh Districts on January 26 (today) morning, reports The New Indian Express. However, there was no casualty in the explosions as they were triggered in isolated places. The Police said the explosions were reported from Angera, Lengeribor and Bihubor in Charaideo District and Chowkidinghee area in Dibrugarh town in Dibrugarh District. The bomb in Dibrugarh was planted near a drain, 500 meters away from the official Republic Day function. It went off even while the celebration there was on. In Angera, the explosion occurred near a petrol pump. The powerful blast left a deep crater at the site. The second blast was reported from Lengeribor on the Assam-Nagaland border while the blast at Bihubor was triggered near an office of the Forest Department. The Police said the bombs were triggered apparently to create panic among people who were earlier urged by the militants to boycott the Republic Day celebrations.

At least seven people were injured when a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast was triggered by two suspected assailants at the residence of K Leishiyo (43) at Langol Laimanai Lanthungching in Imphal West District on March 2, reports The Sangai Express. The injured persons were identified as Mark Keishing (37), Gideon Keishing (50), Zeneatte Ningshen (30), Samson Maku (55), Fanny Grace (40), Reishang Ningshen (35) and Star Shinglai (30). The owner of the residence is contesting in the ensuing Assembly election from Phungyar Assembly Constituency on Naga People’s Front (NPF) ticket. Police suspect the blast is related to the upcoming Assembly elections but could not immediately identify those behind the attack. "We are investigating the case," a Police Officer said adds The Telegraph.
