Assam Tribune however, indicates that the banks might start functioning from January 12 (today) following withdrawal of its demand by the outfit. The closure reportedly affected the Indo-Myanmar border trade ‘severely’. In addition, 35000 customers of the UBI, the first nationalized bank to enter the State, couldn’t carry out their daily transactions amounting to over INR 100 to 150 millions.

The People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) has reportedly been intimidating the villagers of Heirok in the Thoubal district after apologising for its involvement in the March 24 killing of three persons, including two girls. The Joint Action Committee, formed to protest against the killing at Heirok, warned the villagers not to donate for any militant group. The report added that passenger vehicles stopped plying between Heirok and Thoubal and between Heirok and Wangjing from April 20 due to monetary demands made to the vehicle owners by the PREPAK outfit.

Kipgen said that the country made bomb was suspected to be planted by the militants in connection with threats to him on the matter of five percent cuts from the funds meant for distribution to the victims of the Naga-Kuki ethnic violence which was released through the Communal Victims Relief Fund and Resettlement Association. Kipgen is reportedly one of the active members of the association.

According to shopkeepers, an unnamed militant group served demands ranging from INR 10,000 to 30,000 (according to the size and business) on the shops which they said was payable to them as annual "tax". Militants had been putting pressure on the shopkeepers to meet their demand or close down their shops, they disclosed. The businesses were divided into three categories by the militants - bigger shops were asked to pay INR 30,000, middle size shops INR 20,000 each while the small ones were asked to pay INR 10,000.

The filling of cylinders also stopped with effect from December 16, not only triggering a cooking gas scarcity but also depriving the labourers of their daily earnings. “We are feeding our families by working here. As we do not have any work after the NSCN (I-M) threat, our families may face starvation,” the labourers said. “We appeal to the Government in Imphal and Delhi to intervene and solve the impasse so that we can resume work,” the president of the Imphal chapter of the Assam Oil Corporation Contractual Labour Union, S. Joy Singh, and its general secretary Y. Indrajit Singh said in a joint statement on December 22.
