On February 17, the Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) released three hostages, R.K. Chaudhury, Ramen Das and Bimal Das, it had been holding since January 22, somewhere near the Kaziranga National Park, according to Telegraph. Additional Superintendent of Police, Nityananda Goswami, informed, "They (the hostages) contacted us after being freed and wished to go home directly from the spot instead of coming to Karbi Anglong again." Police had earlier arrested a female relative of a senior leader of the outfit, Thong Terong, who reportedly managed to convince the outfit to release the hostages.

According to Telegraph, suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) abducted Abhisek Agarwal, the 25-year-old son of a biscuit factory-owner, in the Tinsukia district on March 28 after the businessman failed to meet a deadline for payment of extortion money. An unidentified police source said, "During our investigations we have come to know that a member of the ULFA’s 28th Battalion had called the boy’s father yesterday asking him to keep the money ready by the evening." The outfit has reportedly launched a massive extortion drive in Upper Assam, primarily in the Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, targeting businessman and Government employees.

According to police sources, the gunmen opened two rounds of fire in the air from a country made AK-47 rifle while abducting Bishwa Sarma. After reportedly ‘demanding’ Rupees 1 crore for the release of the accountant, the abductors had reduced the ransom amount to Rupees 30 lakhs and later again increased the amount to Rupees 50 lakhs on May 14-night.
