The Janajuddho faction of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) on February 1 threatened to kill eight journalists of Satkhira and officer-in-charge (OC) of the Tala Police Station. In letters to Satkhira Reporters' Club and Press Club, Khulna ‘divisional secretary’ of PBCP, Tushar, said the journalists will be executed very shortly. Blaming Ram Krishna Chakraborty, local correspondent of Daily Jugantar, for 'helping police' arrest their leader, Kartik Chandra Rishi, who was subsequently killed during an encounter with the police on January 20, the letters said that he will be executed. They also held Tala OC, Shah Mashiur Rahman, responsible for Kartik's killing and threatened to kill him too in a short time. Letters termed seven other journalists 'class enemies' and threatened to liquidate them.

Police officials stated the letter was signed by one Abdullah Ibne Jahed, self-proclaimed ‘second-in-command’ of the Harkatul Jihad. The letter warned against disobeying the order or speaking out against Al Qaida, saying the consequences would be like those suffered by Prof. Yunus of Rajshahi University who was earlier killed on December 22, 2004.

A recent advice by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said, "We have concerns that terrorists in Bangladesh may be planning attacks against western interests. These could occur at any time and could be directed against any locations frequented by foreigners, including but not limited to, commercial and public areas, hotels, clubs, restaurants, bars, schools, marketplaces, places of worship, outdoor recreation events and tourist areas." In the first incident, a JMB suicide cadre blew himself up near a police check-post at the entrance to the Chittagong court and in a similar incident, another suicide cadre detonated explosives in a crowd of lawyers and their clients at the Gazipur bar association building. The suicide bomber involved in the Gazipur incident was killed, while the one involved in the Chittagong incident, identified as Abul Bashar, was seriously injured. Two notes found with Bashar termed the attack a preliminary warning to the forces working to ensure security of judges and announced to continue the Jihad until 'an Islamic welfare state is established'.

Separately, the JMB in the Netrakona district threatened to kill a local cable TV ‘Channel-I’ journalist, Zahid Hasan, and his family members if he files any further report against the outfit. In yet another incident, the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police (SP) in Comilla were also reportedly threatened.
