At least 41 persons were injured in clashes between the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) cadres and the Police in the dawn-to-dusk general strike called by BNP on February 4 in 16 northern Districts of Bangladesh, reports New Age. 30 people were injured in Thakurgaon District, eight in Sirajganj District, two in Jaipurhat District and one woman in Bogra District. The opposition BNP called the general strike demanding the release of its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party leader Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu and withdrawal of the cases filed against them. All motorised vehicles remained off the roads and shops, markets and commercial establishments remained closed during the general strike in the 16 Districts. Banks, Government offices and educational institutions, however, remained open with a low transactions and thin attendance.

At least three people were killed and many injured across the country on February 5 as Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres enforced a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) protesting the war crimes trial of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, reports The Daily Star. In Chittagong District, two ICS cadres (Imran Khan and Afzal Hossain) and Shafiqu, a worker of Youngone factory were killed during a clash with Police. Police arrested 15 ICS cadres from the District.In capital Dhaka, the JeI-ICS cadres exploded 8-10 crude bombs when police obstructed them. A Police constable, Nur Nabi, was injured and 52 cadres were arrested from the city. In Comilla District, one JeI-ICS cadre was injured in Police firing. In Rajshahi District, about 10 cadres were injured in a clash with Police as they were intercepted by the law-enforcers. In Khulna District, Police arrested seven cadres from the Khulna city. In Sylhet District, 30 people, including a constable, were injured. In Satkhira District, three Policemen were injured.In Bogra District, Police arrested five cadres. In Natore District, Police arrested one cadre. In Laxmipur District, Police arrested four cadres. In Gazipur District, Police arrested 15 cadres.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres on February 20 called hartal (shut down) in all eight Districts of the Rajshahi Division protesting arrest of its Rajshahi city ameer (leader) Ataur Rahman in Dhaka on February 19, reports The Daily Star. Barring a few incidents of violence in three Districts, the daylong hartal enforced by JeI-ICS cadres passed off largely disregarded in Rajshahi Division. People of Bogra, Natore, Naogaon, Joypurhat and Sirajganj Districts rejected the hartal while it ended amid a few stray incidents of violence in Rajshahi, Pabna and Chapainawabganj Districts. In Rajshahi city of Rajshahi District, JeI-ICS cadres blasted five hand bombs during a clash with Police. At least 12 JeI-ICS cadres were arrested from the city.

In Bogra District, JeI-ICS cadres, attacked Police outposts and Police stations, burnt a railway station, and put roadblocks at different places disrupting train and bus services. The daylong hartal called by the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the students’ wing of JeI, was observed on April 11 amid stray incidents of violence in different parts of the country, reports The Independent. One JeI-ICS cadre identified as Mansoor Ali (50) was killed and over 50 people were injured when the Police fired bullets during a clash with JeI-ICS cadres at Chechuri village under Dumiria sub-District in Khulna District. The clash ensued when the Police tried to disperse JeI-ICS cadres who had blockaded a road in the village by burning tyres and logs. In Dhaka city, ICS cadres brought out several violent processions and involved in a clash with the Police. Two Policemen and two ICS cadres were injured during the clashes. Eight homemade bombs were also exploded sparking panic among the locals. The Police arrested 30 ICS cadres in connection with the arson from the city. In Sathkhira District, two people were injured in an attack carried out by JeI-ICS cadres. Union president Habibar Rahman of the AL and local AL activist Abdul Karim Sardar were injured. In Feni District, ICS cadres vandalised a truck and a few other vehicles, and exploded at least 20 homemade bombs. In Comilla District, ICS cadres exploded four homemade bombs. The Police arrested four ICS cadres while they were organising a picket. In Khulna District, ICS cadres vandalised eight or nine vehicles and blocked the Khulna-Jessore Highway with logs. Two homemade bombs were exploded there. In Bogra District, ICS cadres blocked the Dhaka-Bogra highway. They also staged a demonstration there and set tyres ablaze. Two homemade bombs were exploded in the Bogra town’s Yakubia School intersection.

The shutdown forced the Government to reschedule May 9’s (today’s) Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations for May 31. Hartal supporters torched a three wheeler in Dhaka city’s Mirpur and exploded several homemade bombs. However, no casualty was reported. In Sarail sub-District of Brahmanbaria District, a Police official was injured in an attack by activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and Hefazat-e-Islam (HeI). In Bogra town of Bogra District, JeI and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres torched tyres and explodeed at least five homemade bombs at a Police vehicle.

A pro-hartal (general strike) activist was injured when protesters clashed with Police in Sherpur sub-District of Bogra District during the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) called eight-hour long hartal in Rajshahi Division on June 3, reports Daily Star. JeI, the key component of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party alliance, enforced the hartal in eight Districts of Rajshahi division from 6:00am to 2:00pm protesting the arrest of a Majlish-e-Sura member (member of working committee) of its central unit on June 1. At least 178 people were injured in clashes, arson, vandalism and blasts during the second day of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party countrywide 60-hour hartal (general strike) on November 5, reports The Daily Star.In Dhaka city, six Jatiya Sramik League (JSL) activists suffered injuries when miscreants exploded crude bombs at a rally of the pro-Awami League (AL) labour organisation at Motijheel area. Meanwhile, Pickets torched a pick-up van near the entrance to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters at Pilkhana leaving its driver Al-Amin (20) burnt badly. In Chittagong District, at least nine people, including two children and two TV cameramen, were injured in clashes during hartal hours. Hasanullah and Shamsul Alam Babu, cameramen of Desh TV and Channel-i, were injured when a homemade bomb was hurled at a patrol vehicle of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from a BNP procession at Station Road. Meanwhile, Lal Mia (8) and Surma (9) suffered injuries when a homemade bomb, abandoned by the roadside in Khulshi blasted after they picked it up.In Munshiganj District, at least 55 people, including three Policemen, were injured in a triangular clash between the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of BNP ruling Awami League (AL) and Police.In Comilla District, activists of AL and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) fought pitched battles at Gunoboti bazaar leaving at least 35 persons injured.In Thakurgaon District, at least 25 people, including three Policemen, were injured in a clash between BNP and AL men at Thakurgaon town’s intersection.In Chandpur District, at least 30 people were injured when a clash broke out between AL and BNP men at Baharia Bazar.In Bogra District, at least 17 people were injured when pro-hartal pickets hurled around five crude bombs and brickbats at a train at Bogra Railway Station.

Nine persons were injured on December 18, the second day of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party opposition 72-hour blockade across the country, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, six people were injured with shrapnel as blockaders exploded homemade bombs. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered 10 crude bombs from the possession of Anwaruzzaman Anwar, joint convener of BNP’s Mohanagar committee. In Cox's Bazar District, a bus helper sustained burn injuries when miscreants set fire to his vehicle in Teknaf sub-District. The victim, Khairul Bashar, was asleep inside the parked bus when it was torched. In Pabna District, a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of Awami Laegue (AL) was allegedly beaten by Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres in Ishwardi sub-District. In Bogra Dsitrict, 10 blockaders were arrested during the joint forces’ drives in different areas of the District. In Lalmonirhat District, members of the joint forces arrested nine JeI-ICS Cadres from Kafir Bazar in Patgram sub-District for their alleged involvement in violence and acts of sabotage during blockades. In Chittagong District, JeI-ICS Cadres brought out a flash procession in Khatiber Bari area and hurled two crude bombs targeting a Police van. Police arrested an ICS cadre, Forkan, in this connection.
