At least three people were killed and many injured across the country on February 5 as Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres enforced a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) protesting the war crimes trial of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, reports The Daily Star. In Chittagong District, two ICS cadres (Imran Khan and Afzal Hossain) and Shafiqu, a worker of Youngone factory were killed during a clash with Police. Police arrested 15 ICS cadres from the District.In capital Dhaka, the JeI-ICS cadres exploded 8-10 crude bombs when police obstructed them. A Police constable, Nur Nabi, was injured and 52 cadres were arrested from the city. In Comilla District, one JeI-ICS cadre was injured in Police firing. In Rajshahi District, about 10 cadres were injured in a clash with Police as they were intercepted by the law-enforcers. In Khulna District, Police arrested seven cadres from the Khulna city. In Sylhet District, 30 people, including a constable, were injured. In Satkhira District, three Policemen were injured.In Bogra District, Police arrested five cadres. In Natore District, Police arrested one cadre. In Laxmipur District, Police arrested four cadres. In Gazipur District, Police arrested 15 cadres.

At least three people were killed and 150 Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres were injured across the country during February 18 country-wide dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) called by the JeI-ICS, reports New Age. In the Dhaka city, one Mohammad Ikbal (35) died at Badda. In Comilla District, ICS cadre Md Ibrahim (28) was shot dead in Police firing at Chouddagram. In Cox’s Bazar District, a patient, Hafiz Abdur Rahman died as the microbus carrying him came under attack of JeI-ICS cadres on way to a hospital. The Police arrested about 100 JeI-ICS cadres during the hartal hours. Further, the countrywide hartal called by JeI-ICS got little response from the masses on February 18 as almost all businesses, offices and educational institutions went on with regular routine. Responding to the call of Shahbagh protesters, Dhaka city residents defied the hartal as they went to their offices in the morning. Buses operated on roads. Banks and shipping malls also remained open.

Five people, including a teenage boy, were killed and 17 others injured as Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres clashes with law enforcers across the country on the concluding day of two-day hartal on March 4, reports The Daily Star. In Satkhira District, JeI-ICS cadres blocked the Kalaroa-Sarashikatki road with logs and attacked Police when the law enforcers reached the spot. The Police opened fire in which two brothers - Arif Billah (40) and Ruhul Amin (35) - died on the spot and Shamsur Rahman (42) died at Satkhira Sadar Hospital. Two others cadres got injured. In Sirajganj District, a teenage boy was killed when Police opened fire in the face of attacks by JeI-ICS cadres in Ullapara sub-District. The deceased was identified as Mahfuz. At least 15 people were also injured. In Rangpur District, a JeI-ICS cadre, who sustained bullet injury during February 28’s clashes at Mithapukur town, succumbed to his injury on March 4. In Chittagong District, JeI-ICS cadres set fire to an abandoned train engine at Chittagong Railway Station. Security officials of the station doused the fire and managed to catch one of the miscreants. They handed him to the Police.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s dawn-to-dusk hartal (general shut down) was marked by incidents of vandalism, arson and explosion and clash with law enforcers and ruling party activists across the country on March 5. In Satkhira Districrt, 45-year-old Shukur Ali, a member of Awami League (AL) executive committee, was killed, hours after being injured in an attack at the office of Kalaroa sub-District. Three AL cadres were also injured in the attack. In Bhola District, at least 50 people were wounded in a clash between BNP and AL cadres as the two groups took to streets for and against the hartal. In Netrokona District, at least 20 people were wounded when BNP activists vandalised and set fire to vehicles. In Rangpur District, at least 20 people, including two cameramen, were injured in a clash between supporters of AL and BNP at Rangpur city market. In Barisal District, as many as 11 people were injured in Barisal city when BNP men locked in clash with Police and ruling party men. In Lalmonirhat District, at least 10 people, including seven AL cadres, were injured in a clash with BNP supporters. In Narayanganj District, at least 10 people, including BNP District unit president Taimur Alam Khandaker, were injured during clashes between BNP men and Police. In Chittagong District, at least 10 people were injured. In Brahmanbaria District, at least five people, including one Policeman, were injured in a chase and counter chase between law enforcers and pickets. In Dhaka city, the pro-hartal cadres exploded cocktails four cocktails. None was arrested in this connection.

At least 37 people, including three Policemen, were injured when Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) cadres clashed with Police and ruling Awami League (AL) members to mark countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal (general shutdown) on March 12, reports The Daily Star. In Sirajganj District, BNP cadres clashed with Policemen, leaving 20 people, including a Police constable, Belal Hossain, injured. In Rajshahi District, nine people, including a Police constable, were injured in clashes between pickets and Policemen. In Dinajpur District, three people were injured as pro-hartal activists were locked in a clash with anti-hartal activists. The clash erupted when AL members tried to resist the pickets at Andarmuha village. In Brahmanbaria District, three people were injured as chase and counter-chase took place between the BNP and AL cadres. In Dhaka city, hartal supporters exploded six cocktails in Mirpur, a bus driver sustained minor injuries. Two cocktail like substances were recovered from the road beside the International Crimes Tribunal set in the High Court area in city for war crimes trial. In Comilla District, a Police constable was injured when pickets hurled brick chips at Policemen.

In Naogaon District, Shukbor Ali (65), a JeI-ICS cadre of Raninagar sub-District was killed when JeI-ICS cadres clashed with local businessmen. The local JeI unit claimed he was one of its members. Twenty others were injured in the incident. At least five vehicles, including a journalist’s motorcycle, and seven shops were also damaged. In Feni District, Mohammad Salman, a class-X student of Jamiatul Al Salayyha Madrasa, was killed in a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and Police on Trunk Road in Feni town. AKM Shamsuddin, general secretary of District unit JeI, claimed Salman was an ICS cadre. Also, in Rajshahi District, four Policemen were beaten up by ICS cadres in Rajshahi city. The Policemen came under attack when they tried to resist ICS cadres marching on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway blasting crude bombs.

In Satkhira District, Abdul Hamid (48), an Awami League (AL) activist died of his injuries seven hours after he was abducted and beaten up allegedly by JeI-ICS cadres in Madhabkathi area. In Sylhet District, 40 people, including two Policemen, were injured as JeI-ICS cadres clashed with Police on Sylhet-Sunamganj road. Over 300 JeI-ICS cadres blocked the road and vandalized some rickshaws and battery-run three-wheelers. As Police tried to disperse them, the blockaders hurled brick chunks at law enforcers and exploded several crude bombs triggering a running battle. In Bagerhat District, 15 people, including five Policemen, sustained injuries in a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and law enforcers. In Khulna District, a clash between ICS cadres and Police at Sonadanga in Khulna city left at least 15 injured. The clash sparked when Police resisted the cadres who had blocked a road with logs. In Cox’s Bazar District, five Policemen were injured as JeI-ICS cadres clashed with the law enforcers at Bazarghata. In Rajshahi District, JeI-ICS cadres severed the tendons of the right leg of an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of AL at Bagha sub-District. Armed with machetes, about 10 JeI-ICS cadres ambushed Mizanur Rahman, a second-year student of Shah Doula Degree College, when he was going to his village home in Chhatari. In Chapainawabganj District, JeI-ICS cadres attacked an activist of Gonojagoron Mancha at Methorpara intersection injuring him badly. In a spree of countrywide violence, Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres on December 13 rampaged through the capital and 23 other Districts, protesting December 12’s execution of war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah, a top JeI leader, reports The Daily Star. The frenzied protests left at least eight people dead and more than 100 vehicles as well as offices, factories and houses burnt across the country. In Satkhira District, JeI-ICS cadres hacked to death a local Awami League (AL) man in Kolaroasub-District, while Police recovered the bullet-hit body of a kindergarten student from Baladanga area. The deceased are Joj Ali (35) and Riyad Hasan (9). In Noakhali District, a JeI-ICS cadre named Khorshed Ali (40), died of bullet injuries. He was hit when law enforcers opened fire on a group of blockaders to clear Chatkhil-Sonaimuri road. Imam Uddin, a rickshaw puller, was also injured in the police firing. Separately, an ICS cadre died and five others were bullet hit in a clash with the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of AL in Sonaimuri sub-District. In Joypurhat District, a freedom fighter died after he jumped out of a rickshaw being chased by JeI-ICS cadres in Pachbibi sub-District. The victim is Shamsul Alam (62). He was critically injured as he fell hard on the street. In Khulna District, Nahid (18) died after Police opened fire on JeI-ICS cadres following an attack at the Nirala Police outpost in the town. Police said JeI-ICS cadres hurled petrol bombs and cocktails at the outpost, prompting the Police to open fire. In Dhaka city, soon after Juma prayers, JeI-ICS cadres in droves unleashed a reign of terror near Motijheel AGB Colony kitchen market, torching four private cars and seven motorcycles. At least 11 people were injured when Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the attackers. Police arrested 14 cadres, two of them bullet-hit, from the spot. In Narayanganj District, JeI-ICS cadres beat up two Policemen, set fire to four vehicles and vandalised 12 vehicles. In Feni District, a truck helper, Selim, suffered burn injuries after arsonists set fire a cotton-laden truck in Debipur area. A Government office and a bank were also set afire while at least 10 vehicles were torched by JeI-ICS cadres in the District.

In Noakhali District, JeI-ICS cadres clashed with law enforcers in Companiganj sub-District leaving six ICS cadres dead and 15 others injured. The clash erupted when Police intercepted a procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres from the KM Model High School. The deceased were Motiur (22), Raihan (21), Abdus Sattar (24), Saiful Islam (21), Sajib (22) and Russel (20). In Nilphamari District, the motorcade of Awami League (AL) lawmaker Asaduzzaman Noor came under attack from JeI-ICS cadres. The attack on the motorcade triggered a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and AL activists near Ramganj Bazar leaving five AL acvtivists killed in the clash. The victims are Khorshed Chowdhury (50), Farhad Hossain (35), Lebu (30), Murad Hossain (35) and Abu Bakar Siddique (45). At least 50 people, mostly AL activists, were injured in the clash. In Lalmonirhat District, three ICS cadres and one AL supporter were killed and at least three others were shot during instances of violence in Patgram sub-District. The deceased were ICS cadres Manirul Islam (28), Abdur Rahman (30) and Shaju Islam (24). The AL activist, Mantu Mia, was beaten to death for what was apparently revenge for the death of three ICS cadres. In Joypurhat District, three ICS cadres were killed in a clash that ensued between the JeI-ICS cadres and Police in the District's Purano Poil. The deceased were identified as Firoz Hossain, Sakib and Insan Ali. In Laxmipur District, a leader Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of AL was hacked to death by ICS cadres. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered 10 crude bombs from the possession of Anwaruzzaman Anwar, joint convener of BNP’s Mohanagar committee. In Cox's Bazar District, a bus helper sustained burn injuries when miscreants set fire to his vehicle in Teknaf sub-District. The victim, Khairul Bashar, was asleep inside the parked bus when it was torched. In Pabna District, a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of Awami Laegue (AL) was allegedly beaten by Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres in Ishwardi sub-District. In Bogra Dsitrict, 10 blockaders were arrested during the joint forces’ drives in different areas of the District. In Lalmonirhat District, members of the joint forces arrested nine JeI-ICS Cadres from Kafir Bazar in Patgram sub-District for their alleged involvement in violence and acts of sabotage during blockades. Having exhausted all their savings, truck driver Abu Miah (42) and helper Saiful Alam Biltu (30), hit the road with a cattle-laden truck to earn some money so that their families would not have to starve. But little could they imagine that they would meet such a fate. At Fauzdarhat a petrol bomb was thrown at the vehicle. Abu and Biltu ended up being admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with 10 percent and 41 percent burns.
