At least three people were killed and many injured across the country on February 5 as Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres enforced a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) protesting the war crimes trial of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, reports The Daily Star. In Chittagong District, two ICS cadres (Imran Khan and Afzal Hossain) and Shafiqu, a worker of Youngone factory were killed during a clash with Police. Police arrested 15 ICS cadres from the District.In capital Dhaka, the JeI-ICS cadres exploded 8-10 crude bombs when police obstructed them. A Police constable, Nur Nabi, was injured and 52 cadres were arrested from the city. In Comilla District, one JeI-ICS cadre was injured in Police firing. In Rajshahi District, about 10 cadres were injured in a clash with Police as they were intercepted by the law-enforcers. In Khulna District, Police arrested seven cadres from the Khulna city. In Sylhet District, 30 people, including a constable, were injured. In Satkhira District, three Policemen were injured.In Bogra District, Police arrested five cadres. In Natore District, Police arrested one cadre. In Laxmipur District, Police arrested four cadres. In Gazipur District, Police arrested 15 cadres.

At least three people were killed and 150 Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres were injured across the country during February 18 country-wide dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) called by the JeI-ICS, reports New Age. In the Dhaka city, one Mohammad Ikbal (35) died at Badda. In Comilla District, ICS cadre Md Ibrahim (28) was shot dead in Police firing at Chouddagram. In Cox’s Bazar District, a patient, Hafiz Abdur Rahman died as the microbus carrying him came under attack of JeI-ICS cadres on way to a hospital. The Police arrested about 100 JeI-ICS cadres during the hartal hours. Further, the countrywide hartal called by JeI-ICS got little response from the masses on February 18 as almost all businesses, offices and educational institutions went on with regular routine. Responding to the call of Shahbagh protesters, Dhaka city residents defied the hartal as they went to their offices in the morning. Buses operated on roads. Banks and shipping malls also remained open.

At least 37 people, including three Policemen, were injured when Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) cadres clashed with Police and ruling Awami League (AL) members to mark countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal (general shutdown) on March 12, reports The Daily Star. In Sirajganj District, BNP cadres clashed with Policemen, leaving 20 people, including a Police constable, Belal Hossain, injured. In Rajshahi District, nine people, including a Police constable, were injured in clashes between pickets and Policemen. In Dinajpur District, three people were injured as pro-hartal activists were locked in a clash with anti-hartal activists. The clash erupted when AL members tried to resist the pickets at Andarmuha village. In Brahmanbaria District, three people were injured as chase and counter-chase took place between the BNP and AL cadres. In Dhaka city, hartal supporters exploded six cocktails in Mirpur, a bus driver sustained minor injuries. Two cocktail like substances were recovered from the road beside the International Crimes Tribunal set in the High Court area in city for war crimes trial. In Comilla District, a Police constable was injured when pickets hurled brick chips at Policemen.

Police said the ICS cadres brought out a procession. When the Police tried to disperse them, ICS cadres attacked them, leaving two Policemen injured. The ICS cadres also vandalised a Police vehicle and a number of vehicles plying on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.Violence marked the first day of the 60-hour hartal (general shut down) enforced by ICS in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj Districts on April 22, reports The Daily Star. In Rajshahi District, ICS cadres vandalised a goods-laden truck in Kapashia area on the outskirts of the Rajshahi city. They also exploded homemade bombs in Kharkhari, Balia, and Shahmakhdum areas. In Chapainawabganj District, ICS cadres blocked Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid Road at Razarampur and Shibtala area in the Chapainawabganj town by burning tyres. They exploded homemade bombs at Boro Indira intersection, Shibtala and Upar Razarampur in the town.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18 party alliance observed hartal (general strike) on May 26 in Chittagong, Laxmipur, Feni, Comilla, Tangail, Madaripur, Joypurhat and Faridpur protesting an arrest warrant against BNP’s ‘vice-president’, Tarique Rahman in connection with a money laundering case, reports Daily Star. The decision to go for a hartal on May 29 was made at a meeting of 18-party top leaders with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair at her Gulshan office on May 26.Meeting sources said Khaleda Zia, mother of Tarique, instructed the 18-party leaders to observe a tougher hartal tomorrow by ensuring their presence on the streets. Hartal supporters vandalised at least 17 vehicles and exploded a dozen homemade crude bombs in different parts of the capital Dhaka and in Narayanganj.

At least 178 people were injured in clashes, arson, vandalism and blasts during the second day of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party countrywide 60-hour hartal (general strike) on November 5, reports The Daily Star.In Dhaka city, six Jatiya Sramik League (JSL) activists suffered injuries when miscreants exploded crude bombs at a rally of the pro-Awami League (AL) labour organisation at Motijheel area. Meanwhile, Pickets torched a pick-up van near the entrance to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters at Pilkhana leaving its driver Al-Amin (20) burnt badly. In Chittagong District, at least nine people, including two children and two TV cameramen, were injured in clashes during hartal hours. Hasanullah and Shamsul Alam Babu, cameramen of Desh TV and Channel-i, were injured when a homemade bomb was hurled at a patrol vehicle of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from a BNP procession at Station Road. In Comilla Dsitrict, a clash between AL, BNP and Police left at least 23 people including seven Policemen injured in Burichang sub-District headquarters. In Chandpur District, BNP men brought out a procession in support of hartal and vandalised at least 10 roadside shops at Bahria Bazaar. Protesting the vandalism, AL activists brought out an anti-hartal procession in the area and locked into the clash with opposition men leaving 50 people of both the parties injured.

In Laxmipur District, four people were killed and 28 were injured when Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel opened fire during their clash with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party opposition men in Laxmipur town. The deceased were: Shihab Hossain, a cadre of slami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI); Sumon, BNP’s youth wing Juba Dal activist; Mahbubur Rahman, a trader; and a RAB member. In Comilla District, JeI cadre Anwar Hossain was killed and 38 people, including three Policemen, were injured after Police clashed with JeI cadres in Monoharganj sub-District. In Gaibandha District, at least 25 people sustained injuries in a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and Awami League (AL) activists in Palashbari sub-District. In Sylhet District, 20 people, including two Policemen, were injured in a clash between law enforcers and ICS cadres in Osmani Medical Road area. In Rajshahi District, JeI-ICS cadres clashed with Police in Rajshahi city, leaving four Police Constables injured as the cadres exploded homemade bombs. In Chittagong District, JeI-ICS cadres exploded crude bombs at a procession of AL at Andarkilla intersection of Chittagong city. Three Policemen, including Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (Kotwali Zone) Mirza Saiem Mahmud, were injured in the bomb blasts.
