At least 20 persons were killed and another 16 injured when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into Miryan Police Station in the Bannu town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 12, reports Daily Times. The intensity of the blast was so high that it also badly damaged a nearby mosque. “The target was the Police Station and the nearby mosque. Police and paramilitary personnel were praying inside the mosque,” when the bombing took place, Bannu District Police Chief Mohammad Iftikhar said. “There are some civilians also but most of the victims are security personnel,” he added. Claiming the responsibility, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Azam Tariq said it was to avenge US drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal belt, which borders Afghanistan. “We claim responsibility for this attack. We will continue such attacks unless the drone attacks are stopped,” Azam Tariq added.

Pakistan’s fight against terrorist leads to record an increase in cases of Polio from 89 in the previous year to 138, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) figures, Daily Times reported on January 14. That made it the nation with the highest incidence of polio in the world. Most cases were in the northwest close to the Afghanistan border, where battles between the US-supported Pakistani Army and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) make many areas too dangerous to visit. The Army bans travel to parts of the region, citing the security situation, and territory under terrorist control is highly dangerous for outsiders, even Pakistani aid workers. In 2009, one Pakistan Taliban commander declared the vaccine un-Islamic, echoing a few conservative clerics in other Muslim countries. But others have not publicly stated any objections. In Afghanistan, the Taliban cooperate with health workers administering the vaccine, in part because doing so adds to the movement’s legitimacy.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) warned tribesmen of NWA against joining the Army, Frontier Corps or Levies Force, reports Dawn. A pamphlet distributed in Miranshah on behalf of the Shura-i-Mujahideen (council of holy fighters) said the Government had been recruiting locals in the army, Frontier Corps and Levies Force to use them against the TTP. This Shura is led by a militant leader Hafiz Gul Bahadur. “Recruitments can create civil war in North Waziristan,” said the pamphlet written in Urdu. “Those who have already joined Levies and (other) paramilitary forces should quit their jobs. Those who don’t obey the advice will face consequences and Mujahideen will not accept any excuse,” it said.

Britain on January 18 moved to ban the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as a terrorist outfit, making it illegal to belong to or raise funds for the organisation in Britain, states Daily Times. “Proscription is a tough but necessary power to tackle terrorism and is not a course of action we take lightly,” said Theresa May, adding, “Proscription means that membership of TTP will become a criminal offence, and the organisation will not be able to lawfully operate in the United Kingdom, including raising funds.” Britain Home Secretary Theresa May introduced the order in Parliament on January 17. The order would ban TTP under the British Terrorism Act.

Matt Waldman, a research fellow at the Carr Centre for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University, made the claim in a paper he published in 2010. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on January 26 claimed responsibility for bomb explosions that occurred in Karachi (Sindh) and Lahore (Punjab) on January 25 and said the blasts were aimed at killing Security Forces (SFs) because they serve the United States (US) interests, reports Dawn. “The SFs will face attacks as they protected US interests in Pakistan. 20 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants and six Turi Bangash tribesmen were killed and two TTP militants were injured when militants attacked a village in Kurram Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 30 after a grand jirga (tribal assembly) headed by lawmakers had announced a truce between Turi Bangash tribes and TTP, reported Dawn. On January 28, it was reported that the main Thall-Parachinar Road, which has remained closed for about four years, would be reopened in 24 hours under an accord between the warring groups. On January 29, the Frontier Corps (FC) commandant announced that a passenger convoy escorted by FC personnel would leave from Parachinar for Thall. But the TTP and their local supporters blocked the road when the convoy reached the Bagan village in Lower Kurram Agency. Later on January 30, a TTP Lashker from Khar Kaly Sadda attacked the neighbouring Turi Bangash village of Blashkhel, but faced tough resistance.
