Police have arrested 17 people, including five teenagers, on terrorism-related charges, a senior Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer told a televised news conference in Toronto on June 3-morning, according to Dawn. All the men arrested were residents of Canada and most were Canadian citizens, said Mike McDonell, Assistant Commissioner of the RCMP. The 12 adults and five youths were reportedly of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin. McDonell said it was a "home-grown terror cell intent on launching attacks against targets in Southern Ontario" which would have been more devastating than the Oklahoma City bombing. "This group presented a real and serious threat. They had the capacity and intent to carry out a terrorist attack," he added. Police said they recovered three tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, a quantity three times the amount used by Timothy McVeigh to destroy the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995.

A federal jury in the United States of America convicted a Maryland man of plotting to assist the Pakistan-based outlawed group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), according to The News. Ali Asad Chandia, aged 29, was found guilty on three counts of terrorism-related charges, including providing material support to the LeT, which is designated a foreign terrorist organization by the US Government. Prosecutors linked Chandia, who lives in College Park, Maryland, to a British national, Mohammed Ajmal Khan, who pleaded guilty to terrorism offenses in a British court. The US Department of Justice said in a statement the case, which included evidence from British authorities and testimony from British investigators, showed the importance of cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies.

Gas supply to vast areas in the country was suspended late on June 6-evening when the main compressor plant at Sui in the Balochistan province was closed after the main pipeline feeding the plant was blown up, according to Dawn. “The plant has been closed temporarily as a precautionary measure,” official sources in Sui said. Sources in the Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) said the region to which the supply had been affected stretched from Balochistan to Sindh to Punjab to the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). “Gas supply has been stopped to many industrial units, including fertiliser plants, in Punjab, Sindh and other areas of the country,” the sources said. According to reports, armed insurgents planted a powerful explosive device beneath the pipeline of 20 inches diameter taking gas to the Sui plant from the gas field destroying a large portion of the pipeline on the outskirts of Sui town.

The Interior Ministry has reportedly directed police chiefs of the four provinces, Islamabad and Northern Areas to provide security to prominent Shia leaders and Imambargahs (Shia place of worship). The ministry issued the directive after intelligence agencies reported that activists of the banned Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) were planning to kill Shia leaders, according to Daily Times. The National Crisis Management Cell of the Interior Ministry revealed that Abu Khabab, an Egyptian activist of the Al Qaeda and an expert in bomb-making, had promised to assist the LeJ attacks on Shia targets in Pakistan. A report filed by the intelligence agencies to the ministry said the LeJ activists, Abdullah of Vehari, Moavia Bhai of Hangu, Saifullaha Abbasi of Abbottabad and Shoaib Khan of Peshawar, had formed a gang and were planning attacks on the Shia community. It said the gang had listed Shia leaders residing in Gilgit and worship places, including Jamiatul Muntazir in Lahore and Imambargahs in Binori Town and Rizvia Society in Karachi.

Canadian terror suspects arrested last week in Toronto had reportedly considered launching an aerial assault and may be tied to groups in the United States, Britain and Pakistan. The National Post newspaper said the Toronto-area suspects sought military training in Pakistan and may have asked a British man for help to arrange the schooling. Briton Abid Khan, aged 21, is said to have visited Canada in 2005 at the same time as two US terror suspects, Ehsanul Islam Sadequee and Syed Haris Ahmed, both in US custody, the newspaper said. The group “developed a plan for traveling to Pakistan where they would attempt to receive military training at one of several terrorist-sponsored camps,” the FBI said in the documents. Khan was arrested on June 6-night at Manchester airport upon his return from Pakistan. Globe and Mail, citing reports, said Khan, who was being interrogated by British police, may have lived with one of the Canadian suspects.

Local Taliban and religious leaders in North Waziristan on June 11 issued public notices warning people of “serious repercussions” if they do not shun “un-Islamic activities” like watching movies and listening to music, Daily Times reported. The announcement comes a day after the military bombed a terrorist hideout, killing up to 20 terrorists. The Taliban warned tribesmen to avoid hashish, heroin and wine, end all smuggling, ban all “un-Islamic” video and audio cassettes, ban dish antennas in houses and bazaars, and close all gambling dens. All such places of gambling will now be used for a “noble purpose”, the announcement said. The Taliban also announced a ban on interest on loans, and staged fights between birds and animals. “Any person committing these atrocities from Monday [June 12] will be punished accordingly if spared by the government,” said the announcement. Sources said that most local tribesmen supported the announcement, believing its implementation would bring peace to the troubled tribal agency.

The Commander of 11 Corps, Lt. Gen Mohammed Hamid Khan, claimed that the Pakistan Army has put militants in Waziristan “on the defensive” and the situation in the Waziristan tribal areas has “cooled down tremendously”. Gen Hamid Khan told Washington Post in Peshawar that the army had shifted from mass raids to “snap operations” based on intelligence, and now controls key towns once in the hands of militants. He said, “In my view, stability for Afghanistan is the best thing for Pakistan. All the turmoil there affects us; we get the refugees, the criminals, the drugs, the weapons. The miscreants have much safer sanctuaries on that side than on ours. If we want strategic depth, better we should have good relations than instability.” However, Afrasiab Khattak of the Awami National Party reportedly said, “North and South Waziristan are in the grip of Talibanisation” and all of the seven federally administered tribal agencies “can come under its grip, too. The army has put up an honest fight, but it has failed, and the government has failed. The traditional system has been made ineffective, and the Taliban have moved into the vacuum.”

The Government informed the National Assembly that 408 foreign students were still studying in various seminaries in Pakistan. In a written statement, Religious Affairs Minister Ijazul Haq said the students studying in Pakistani seminaries belonged to Afghanistan, Cambodia, China, Finland, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Niger, Nigeria, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Sudan, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda and the United States. He admitted that there was no code or rules prescribed for the education of foreign students studying in Pakistani seminaries. The minister said that following the July 7, 2005-bombings in London, the Government had told foreign seminary students to leave the country by December 2005.

The local Taliban staged the public execution of an alleged killer at Ipi, a town near Mir Ali, in North Waziristan on June 30. “The man was shot with AK-47 assault rifles by relatives of the murdered men,” said eyewitnesses, adding, the Taliban had “arrested” the man and had asked the victims’ relatives to kill him in public. They added, “The militants blindfolded him and tied his hands together, dragged him to a public area in the village and gave assault rifles and three bullets to one of the relatives of each of the dead. The sound of the gunshot echoed in the area, as people chanted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is great).” Sources told Daily Times that the execution was the first of its kind in North Waziristan, where the Taliban’s influence was spreading despite the presence of large contingents of the Army. “Real Talibanisation has now begun,” a civilian said.
