On March 3, the Government extended the house-arrest term of six senior political party leaders by two months. These include, Nepali Congress (NC) President, Girija Prasad Koirala, Nepali Congress (Democratic) President, Sher Bahadur Deuba and central leader Purna Bahadur Khadka, CPN-UML General Secretary, Madhav Kumar Nepal, its Standing Committee member, Bharat Mohan Adhikari and Peoples’ Front Nepal Chairman Amik Sherchan. The Government has already provided three-month detention orders to most of the 450 leaders and cadres detained on various dates in the past. According to a statement released by the Royal Nepalese Army’s (RNA) Directorate of Public Relations, SFs have destroyed a major bomb factory of the Maoists at Chaulim in the Chitwan district on March 5. The insurgents were reportedly manufacturing socket bombs and other improvised explosive devices (IED) to use in Chitwan, Gorkha and the surrounding districts. Over 2000 IEDs, 320 detonators, four safety fuse coil, a sack of gun powder, 10 tins of explosives, a large quantity of raw materials, hundreds of domestic weapons, tools and electrical goods were seized during the raid. On the same day, SF personnel raided a Maoist hideout in the Kabeli area of Paanchthar district and seized 100-quintals of rice and 43-quintals of salt, which were recently looted from Khahare area along the Mechi Highway.

On March 9, the Government released at least eight people, including three former ministers, Prakash Sharan Mahat, Meena Pandey and Nilamber Acharya. Meanwhile, the United States State Department spokesperson, Richard Boucher, reportedly expressed concern over the recent arrest of 200 political activists and leaders during a demonstration in Kathmandu on March 8. He added "We (United States) don't think that that is correct and we have urged their release and a return to the past democratic dialogue." Further, on March 8, Vice Chairman in the Council of Ministers, Kirtinidhi Bista, said the state of emergency would not be longer than three months. He added, "the government is ready to hold parliamentary elections within three years and handover the power to the elected representatives if the political parties support it."

The trio was going to take part in a seminar entitled ‘Democracy in South Asia’ due to be held in Goa. Dr. Hachhethu said, "They (the security personnel) refused to give us any reason (for stopping us) in writing though their behaviour was generally polite… We couldn’t just understand why the government is trying to stop mobility of academic personnel."

Kathmandu Post has reported that at least 29 Nepali Congress (NC) cadres were arrested during protest rallies in several parts of the country on March 30. Meanwhile, the five agitating political parties – the NC, Communist Party of Nepal-UML, Nepali Congress (Democratic), Nepal Sadbhavana Party (Anandi Devi) and People's Front Nepal - have formed a joint struggle committee in the Sarlahi district. Separately, during a meeting in Kathmandu on March 30, a senior leader of the CPN-UML, K.P. Sharma Oli, ruled out reconciliation with the King until the latter restores civil liberties, ends emergency rule and frees all detained political leaders, cadres, journalists and other professionals.
