The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres set fire to a tendu patta godown (warehouse) just 500 meters away from Border Security Force (BSF) camp under Koylibeda Police Station limits in Kanker District of Chhattisgarh late in the night of June 1, reports bhaskar.com. In the incident, 768 sacks filled with tendu leaves worth INR 6.8 million were burnt to ashes. The Maoists have also thrown posters and banners on the spot. After that the Maoists left. When the flames started rising high, the workers came to know about it and reported it to the Police.

CPI-Maoist banner written in Hindi resurfaced in the Bhuliabandha area in Majhipali village in Paikmal block under Padmapur sub-division in Bargarh District of Odisha on June 2, reports The Indian Express. In the banner, Maoists warned against providing information to the Police regarding movement and activities of the Maoists. They further warned the Government officials who are depriving labourers of employment under various welfare schemes. The banner read that some people of Jharmunda, Bhangkhunti, Salepali, Mithapali, Gurunda, Jamseth and Bartunda villages are monitoring the activities of Maoists and are passing on the information to Police. The Maoists threatened to kill such people if they don’t mend their ways. Earlier, on February 1, another banner signed by the Maoists was found at Majhipali village before the panchayat elections, the Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Padampur, Bibhuti Bhusan Bhoi said.

A trooper of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) injured by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) bomb planted by cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), during a joint search operation by the 210 Battalion of CoBRA and the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) in Tarrem area under Pegadapalli Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on June 3, reports livehindustan.com. The trooper, identified as Niranjan Kumar Paswan, was brought to Tarrem and given first aid and is being sent to Raipur for better treatment. This is the fourth incident in a month only in Bijapur, in which Maoists are targeting soldiers by planting IED bombs under their Tactical Counter Offensive Campaign (TCOC), Bijapur, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Pankaj Shukla, said.

During a search operation, the District Reserve Guard (DRG) team arrested one ‘section commander’ of Platoon No 5 under the Rawghat Area Committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), carrying cash reward of INR 200,000 on his head, from the forest area near Daudpadripani village in Dhamtari District of Chhattisgarh on June 3, reports The Pioneer. The ‘section commander’, identified as Mukesh alias Suklu Gawde, a resident of Kanker District, was also a ‘Deputy Commander’ of Platoon No 25 in the Partapur Area Committee of CPI-Maoist since 2009. Gawde was involved in several Maoist violence and had 10 pending warrants against him in Kanker District. Gawde came to Dhamtari District to expand the CPI-Maoist organization, Superintendent of Police (SP), Prashant Kumar Thakur, said.

Pratap Ganjhu alias Mahadev Ganjhu, a cadre of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC/TPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), the main accused of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)'s Balumath president and coal business Dilsher Khan murder case, was arrested from Keri Forest in Balumath Block (administrative division) in Latehar District of Jharkhand on June 4, reports bhaskar.com. Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjani Anjan told that the coal business Dilsher Khan was murdered over the ‘levy’ (extortion money). The main conspirator in this murder was TSPC cadre Pratap Ganjhu who was arrested, and a 9 mm pistol containing five live cartridges, 7.62 mm live cartridges 100, 9 mm live cartridges 250 and two motorcycles used in the incident have been recovered from the possession of Ganjhu.

A special team of the Garhwa District Police arrested one ‘sub-zonal commander’ of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Bhanu Singh Kharwar, from the forests in Garhwa District of Jharkhand on June 5, reports News18. Earlier, Kharwar was arrested twice in October 2016 and 2021, under the Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy (SRP) of Jharkhand Government. After his release, Kharwar had started recruiting youths to strengthen the organization and terrorizing locals including elected representatives in Ranka, Ramkanda and Chinia. Around 10 criminal cases are pending against Kharwar. Police recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, 20 rounds of ammunition, one country-made pistol, two live cartridges and seven mobile phones from his possession, Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjani Kumar Jha, said.

A woman Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on her head and wanted in several cases of attack on Police, surrendered in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on June 5, reports The Times of India. The Maoist, identified as Somli Sodi alias Vanita (32), was working with the banned organisation from 2003 and was the ‘commander’ of its Nagaram Local Organisation Squad (LOS) since 2018. "She surrendered before police on Saturday for the sake of her daughter and family," Bijapur, Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjneya Varshney said. In her statement to police, the rebel, a native of Bijapur, cited hollow Maoist ideology, indiscriminate behaviour, harassment and affection for family as reasons for quitting the Maoist movement, the official said.

The CPI-Maoist put up posters and banners in different areas of the tribal district of Gadchiroli and released an online appeal to everyone, especially the oppressed classes, to condemn and intensify the agitation against the Narendra Modi-led central Government over the defence recruitment scheme. Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police (SP), Ankit Goyal confirmed reports of the CPI-Maoist issuing such appeals to the tribals in the district. In an appeal to tribes, the ‘spokesperson’ of the CPI-Maoist, Abhay, alleged that the government was using forces to suppress the agitations against the newly-launched scheme in several States, particularly in the north of India. Acting on information about presence of a few Maoist cadres on the hills of Kharadi village, about 70 kilometres from District Headquarters Balaghat, a team of 50 personnel of Hawk Force, (special anti-Naxal Force of MP Police) launched the combing operation, in which the Maoists were killed. The slain Maoist trio collectively carried a reward of over INR 5.7 million on their heads. Nagesh, who carried a bounty of INR 2.9 million on him, was the ‘commander’ of Tanda area committee of Mafalling under Gondia-Rajnandgaon-Balaghat (GRB) area of Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh (MMC) corridor. Manoj and Rama, both members of the area committee, carried a bounty of INR 1.4 million each on them. The encounter comes months after Maharashtra Police killed 26 Maoist cadres in MMC zone, where Police say Maoists are trying to expand their base. Following reliable inputs about movement of Maoists, the Security Forces (SFs) launched a combing operation, and while the search was on, the Maoists started firing indiscriminately from Light Machine Gun (LMG) and other automatic weapons on the Police. The operational party retaliated and fired from Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) and AK-47. Due to heavy counter fire by Police, the Maoists retracted from their camp, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhilash G said. Officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) came to Visakhapatnam District on June 23 to investigate the case of a woman who had been missing since 2017. Pallepati Pochamma, a resident of Ranga Reddy District in Telangana, had lodged a complaint stating that her daughter, Radha, a nursing student, was abducted three years ago by members of the Chaitanya Mahila Sangham (CMS), a frontal organisation of the CPI-Maoist, and inducted into the Maoist movement forcibly. In her complaint, Pochamma said her daughter was taken away by the Maoist leaders and CMS activists under the pretext of providing treatment to someone in the Maoist fold. Pochamma also said that her daughter was brought to the Pedabayalu forest area in the erstwhile Visakhapatnam Agency, which is now part of Alluri Sitharamaraju District, and brainwashed by the Maoist leaders to join the movement. Based on her complaint, the NIA officials came to Visakhapatnam and visited Pedabayalu Police Station, where cases had been booked under relevant Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections and also under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Amendment Act (UAPA). The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on June 23, conducted searches at multiple locations in Telangana and arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in recruiting youth for the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), reports Devdiscourse. The NIA carried out searches at three places in Ranga Reddy and Medak and Secunderabad districts in connection with the Pedabayalu CPI-Maoist recruitment case and arrested the trio including a woman High Court Advocate, identified as Chukka Shilpa. The two other accused have been identified as Dongari Devendra and Dubasi Swapna. The NIA also seized incriminating materials including digital devices. The case pertains to the conspiracy and recruitment of a college student into the fold of the outfit by the leaders, members of Chaitanya Mahila Sangham (CMS), a frontal organisation of CPI-Maoist, NIA said in a release. The case was initially registered at Pedabayalu Police Station of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh in January this year. The NIA had re-registered the case on June 3 and taken over the investigation. Based on the searches, the agency arrested the three accused.

Besides Ramakrishna’s arrest, 33 party members and 27 members of the ‘militia’ (people’s army of Maoists), including eight women, his supporters who had been working under his supervision, surrendered to the Police in Alluri Sitarama Raju District. The arrested Maoist, an accused in 124 cases, including several murders, registered in the neighbouring Odisha, and East Godavari and Alluri Sitarama Raju Districts, was carrying a bounty of INR 500,000 on his head. Ramkrishna was allegedly involved in 14 murders, including that of member of legislative Assembly (MLA) Kidari Sarveshwar Rao and former MLA Siveri Soma, Korra Lakshman of Bongajangi, Gemmili Krishnarao of Vakapalli, and others, Police said. Police recovered INR 3.9 million in cash, a landmine, five detonators, one 9 mm pistol along with eight rounds, electrical wire, six batteries and Maoist literature from his possession. Superintendent of Police (SP) S Sateesh Kumar said Operation Parivartan and the comfortable life being led by surrendered Maoists influenced ‘militia’ men to join the mainstream. Several cases are pending against the surrendered members. Among those surrendered, Anand Sireesha, Gangi, Jeevani, Srikanth, Srinu and some others moved along with the Maoist party, laid landmines and ambushed police parties. They had also set fire to road-laying machinery and cellphone towers, killed tribesmen in Praja courts (Kangaroo courts of the Maoists) after branding them as ‘police informers’, and committed other offences, the SP said.
