According to media reports, the State Home Department has alerted the district police chiefs of Hazaribagh, Chatra and Ranchi districts about threat issued by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) to abduct Additional District and Sessions Judge, Hazaribagh, Ashok Kumar Chand. The judge had, on June 16, awarded capital punishment to three MCC Naxalites besides sentencing 23 others to life imprisonment for their involvement in the Beltu massacre in 2001 in which 14 persons were killed by the Naxalites of the MCC. The MCC is reportedly planning to abduct the judge or his family members to drive a hard bargain with the government in lieu of the release of its cadres.

Three left-wing extremists—Naxalites—including a woman, suspected to be belonging to the People’s War Group (PWG) were killed in an encounter at Koushettyyai area in the Tadwai mandal (administrative unit), Warangal district, on August 2. Official sources said the encounter took place when a special police party, combing the area, came across the Naxalites and in the ensuing encounter three Naxalites were killed while eight Naxals managed to escape. Police also recovered two.303 rifles, a 30 US carbine and two 8 mm rifles from the encounter site.

According to media reports, left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) have issued a ‘death warrant’ against the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Saranda, West Singhbhum district, HS Gupta, and three rangers in the division for playing a pivotal role in ushering in development works in the forest villages. The MCC has also threatened to attack the remaining forest guest house in the division, if the department shelters the police there. Gupta was reportedly threatened with dire consequences during his recent visit to Dimbauli village in Saranda, where he arranged a medical camp. The MCC sent the threatening message to Gupta through the villagers who requested him not to visit the village in future as the representatives of the Naxal outfit threatened to punish the villagers as well.

The Jehanabad district and sessions Judge on August 4 sentenced 14 activists of the Communist Party of India, Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) activists, including two of its State-level leaders, Shah Chand and Tribhuwan Sharma, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rupees 4,000 on each of them. The Naxalites damaged the railway communication network at Gurpa in Gaya district in Bihar delaying several trains, including the Rajdhani Express. A goods train engine was set ablaze near Mangrahat on the Garhwa-Barkakana section under Dhanbad division halting train services in Jharkhand. Services in the Patna-Gaya line and the Danapur division were also affected through disruptive methods. Elsewhere, vehicular traffic on the national and State highways remained paralysed. According to media reports, private and Government schools remained closed in several parts of Bihar and Jharkhand. Loading and ferrying of coal from the mines was also affected.

A left-wing extremist—Naxalite—of the Bhupati squad of the Communist Party of India, Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) was killed in an encounter at Kalyangathogu hamlet near Narlapur village of Tadvai mandal (administrative unit), Warangal district on August 26. Police sources said the encounter took place when a police party spotted a group of Naxals near the forest areas. In the ensuing encounter, a Naxalite was killed while 10 others managed to escape. Police recovered 40 live rounds of .8 mm revolver, revolutionary literature and six kit bags from the encounter site.

Five police personnel were killed and two injured in a landmine blast triggered by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—near Tadgaon village in Bhamragar taluka (administrative unit) of Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, on August 29. The incident took place when a convoy of four police vehicles was on its way to Bhamragarh from Gadchiroli. As the police party reached the Kumarguda canal near village, a landmine blew up one of the vehicles. Five police personnel were killed on the spot. Senior police officers have reached the spot and a search operation has been launched to track down the Naxalites.

The police recovered an AK-47 rifle, two 8 mm rifles and live cartridges from the encounter site. Police sources said a special police party launched search operations in and around the town on August 28, following specific information that the Janasakthi Naxalites were planning to either loot a bank or kill one of their targets in Sircilla town. The police spotted a group of Naxalites moving under suspicious circumstances on the outskirts of the town, on August 30. On being asked to identify themselves, one of the Naxals opened fire. In the ensuing encounter, the Naxalite leader was killed.
