Following an advisory from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA), Assam Police may refer ‘serious’ incidents related to cybercrime with inter-state or international ramifications to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), reports The Times of India on May 16. There has been a spike in the cybercrime incidents registered in Assam. With fifth position in the number of cybercrime cases in India, 696 cases in 2016 were registered—which is 44% rise from 483 cases in 2015. Cybercrime has emerged as a challenge for law enforcement agencies; hence there is a need to gear-up mechanisms to tackle cybercrime through CBI which is also a nodal point for the Interpol in India, read the advisory issued by UMHA.
