According to Dawn, US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan killed at least 24 terrorists and destroyed two vehicles in a missile attack in the Lawara Mandi area of North Waziristan on July 14-night. Pakistani security forces also carried out search operations in the same area and arrested seven suspects on July 15. The Director-General of the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, confirmed that terrorists’ bodies were found inside Pakistani territory and were taken into custody. "We presumed they were trying to escape into the Pakistani area when they were hit by coalition forces," Sultan told Dawn. "I cannot say about the origin of the deceased," Sultan said when asked whether any Pakistani was among the dead. He also disclosed that coalition troops had informed Pakistani security forces before their operations on this side of the border. Sultan also told a private TV channel that Pakistan would investigate whether troops from the 18,000-strong US-led coalition in Afghanistan had violated Pakistani airspace or land borders. "Coalition forces had informed us about an operation against the anti-coalition militia and our troops were on stand-by also," he said and added: "When the firing was over our troops searched the area and found 24 bodies and two twin-cabin vehicles. There was no firing from our side, our troops were just patrolling and stood alert."

Egyptian forces are reportedly searching for six Pakistani nationals suspected of involvement in the multiple bombings at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in which at least 88 people were killed. According to official sources, Egyptian forces surrounded two villages in the Sinai peninsula where they believe two of the Pakistani suspects were hiding. Pictures of the six Pakistanis believed to have entered Egypt in early July 2005 were distributed to police stations in the Sharm el-Sheikh area after the attacks. Their passports were reportedly found in an unspecified Sharm el-Sheikh hotel, police said, adding that one of them may have died in the bombings. Arab satellite channels said that nine Pakistanis had been staying in hotels in Sharm el-Sheikh but disappeared after the bombings early on July 23-morning, leaving their passports at reception. An official at the Pakistan Embassy in Cairo said they were in contact with Egyptian authorities on the issue of the missing Pakistanis. "But they have not officially informed us that the Pakistanis are suspected of involvement in the bombing. They are only saying: "We are searching for them. We cannot trace them," said Khalid Ahmed, a Counselor at the Pakistani mission. Meanwhile in Islamabad, a Foreign Office spokesperson said on July 25 that the Egyptian Government has not approached Pakistan over the issue of alleged linkages of Pakistani nationals with the weekend blasts at Sharm el-Sheikh.

Security forces have detained approximately 600 suspected militants in a week-long crackdown that followed the July 7-London attacks, officials told AFP on July 27. Raids were continuing and security agencies were searching for more suspects across all four provinces and in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Of those arrested, 295 belonged to outfits outlawed by President Pervez Musharraf in the past three years, according to Dawn. "They have been held under the Anti-Terrorism Act, which gives police authority to keep them under detention for a year without indicting them before a court," an unnamed interior ministry official told AFP. The remaining 300 detainees included clerics, mosque prayer leaders and others taken into custody for inciting anti-Western and sectarian hatred through sermons and provocative literature, he added.

The deceased was later identified as Abdul Latif, hailing from Lakki Marwat. According to an Inter-Services Public Relations press release issued in Peshawar, the troops neutralised a terrorist hideout functioning from a Madrassa, Shoaibul Uloom, and subsequently recovered rocket launchers, improvised explosive devices, detonators, booby traps and ammunition during a search of the compounds. The leader of the gang, Amir Hamza, and his four accomplices had been arrested a day earlier. According to Daily Times, more than 2,000 special commandos, troops and paramilitary personnel took part in the operation, which was the longest in recent months – starting at 3:30pm on July 28 and ending around 10am the next day. Intelligence sources told Daily Times that letters "from Afghanistan" suggesting how, where and when the terrorist activities could be resumed had also been seized from the compound.
