Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants on January 5 killed 15 Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to avenge, in the words of a TTP spokesman, the death of one of their ‘commanders’ in another tribal area at the hands of Security Forces (SFs), reports Dawn. The bullet-ridden bodies thrown on a hill in Mir Ali sub-district were spotted by tribesmen in the morning. According to an unnamed security official, “We had been trying to get them freed and we maintained contacts with their captors. Until last night the indications were positive. God knows what happened afterwards.” TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told local media in Miranshah, “We have killed these personnel”. He said the killings were in retaliation for the death of Qari Kamran, an important ‘commander’ of TTP, who was killed along with 12 others on January 1 by SFs at Alamgir Killay in the Kermina area near Landikotal in Khyber Agency. "This is revenge for the killing of our comrades in Khyber by Pakistani forces. We will soon take revenge for other operations too," Ehsan added. The 15 personnel guarding the boundary between the FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been taken hostage on December 23, 2011 in a pre-dawn attack by TTP militants on their post in Mullazai area of Tank District (KP).

Bajaur administration official Islam Zeb said, “Today TTP has released 17 of them. They have been freed unconditionally. More than 30 children were abducted from Bajaur Agency during Eid holidays on September 1, 2011.

Rafiq alias Akhlaq, head of a militant group Jundul Khyber, was killed by the cadres of Ansarul Islam (AI) in Bagh locality of the Tirah Valley in Khyber Agency, reports The News. The sources said that Akhlaq had abducted an associate of the rival Tariq Afridi group, a commander of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and imprisoned him at his Hujra (guest House) in Narkhaw area of Maidan being controlled by AI. The TTP asked the AI that one of its fighters had been detained by Akhlaq and sought their help to get the captive released. The sources added that members of the AI raided the Hujra of Akhlaq two days back and got the ‘prisoner’ released, which infuriated Akhlaq. The sources said that Akhlaq hurled a hand-grenade and opened fire on the AI men that led to an exchange of fire. In the ensuing firefight, Akhlaq was killed. Three of his associates were also captured by the AI cadres. Akhlaq was appointed as ‘chief’ of Jundul Khyber in May 2010 after ‘Commander’ Adnan Afridi parted ways with the TTP. Adnan had developed differences with the TTP leadership over the killing of his associates by Tariq Afridi. On October 29, 2010, the bullet-riddled body of Adnan was found in Rawalpindi.

Frontier Corps (FC) Inspector General (IG) Ubaidullah Khan Khattak said that incidents of abductions in Balochistan had increased at an alarming rate and had become a source of generating funds for militants, reports Daily Times. Addressing reporters at FC headquarters in Quetta, Ubaidullah Khan said that Balochistan witnessed a decline in attacks on economic installations like rocket attacks and bomb blasts particularly targeting gas pipelines, power pylons, and railway tracks. However, incidents of abductions and small arms attacks had increased. He said the militants were using kidnappings as source of generating funds. He said that they target foreigners with the intention to be paid ransom money in dollars. Responding to a query about the links between Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch militants, he said there is no link between the two. He said foreign elements were involved in destabilising Balochistan in order to advance their vested interests using local people as tools. “The foreign groups are providing financial support, equipment, training and advice to militants in Balochistan. The foreign interest is comparatively increasing in this particular region,” he said without mentioning name of any country.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on January 21 released a video showing them killing 15 Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel who were abducted in a raid on December 23 in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Dawn. 15 soldiers stood blindfolded, handcuffed to each other on a barren hilltop as one of their bearded TTP captors held an AK-47 rifle and spoke with fury about revenge. TTP militants on January 5 killed 15 FC personnel in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan Agency in FATA. 15 personnel guarding the boundary between the FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been taken hostage on December 23, 2011 in a pre-dawn attack by TTP militants on their post in Mullazai area of Tank District (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). Now they have released a video as a warning to the Army. “Twelve of our comrades were besieged and mercilessly martyred in the Khyber Agency (area),” said the militant. “Our pious women were also targeted. To avenge those comrades, we will kill these men. We warn the government of Pakistan that if the killing of our friends is not halted, this will be the fate of you all.”

Six shepherds went missing while they grazed their cattle in Haleemzai tehsil (revenue unit) of Mohmand Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), close to the Pak-Afghan border on January 29, reported Express Tribune. Although their whereabouts remain “unclear”, authorities believe they might have been abducted by militants and taken across the border. “They are all in their teens and had taken their cattle around Peepal Banda located on the bank of the Kabul River on January 29, 2012. Nothing has been heard about them since then,” Khalid Khan, a senior official of the Agency’s political administration said. The boys were identified as Jabbar, Nizam, Zeeshan, Irshad, Hidayat and Nasrullah. They all hail from the Barokhel and Sultankhel areas of Haleemzai. Meanwhile, residents said that it was not clear whether a demand for ransom had been made or if anyone had contacted the boys’ families. “We have searched for them everywhere but there seems to be no clue. Until someone contacts us, we cannot say if the boys have been kidnapped,” a member of the Hamzakhel tribe said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that the incessant recovery of mutilated bodies, increasing incidents of abductions and targeted killings affirm the notion that law enforcement agencies were either helpless or too weak to take action against criminals. “It is ironic that you know 206 bodies were found dumped in different parts of Balochistan but failed to find any clue about the causes and who are behind these killings,” the Chief Justice remarked when Home Secretary Naseebullah Bazai presented details of unrest. “The discovery of mutilated bodies is fuelling hatred and tarnishing image of the country. You should interview the victim families and dig deeper to know who is responsible for this massacre,” Justice Chaudhry said. The figures provided by the Home Department were different from the report of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). The IB, in its report, said 52 bodies were found dumped this year [2012], but the Home Department said 44 bodies were found during the past three months.
