Militants made a serious threat to the Government against re-starting anti-polio campaign by planting a bomb weighing three kilograms in a health centre in the Rashidabad area of Peshawar (Peshawar District), the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on January 7, reports The News. The bomb was, however, detected and defused. They also found a piece of paper with a message for the Government and senior health department authorities. “The letter carried a message, apparently from the militants, for the government authorities.”

The Lashkar-e-Jangvi (LeJ) warned the Government to immediately shift its under-trial militants from the high-security Anti Terrorism Force (ATF) Jail in Quetta, Cantonment to the Central Jail Hudda in the Quetta or get ready to face yet another suicide assault by its Fidayeen attackers – this time targeting the ATF prison, reports The News. According to well-placed circles in the security establishment, the threat was hurled by Abu Bakar Siddiq, the spokesman of the LeJ’s Balochistan chapter in phone calls he had made after the February 16 Hazara town bomb blast in Quetta which killed 84 Shia Hazaras. The ATF jail in Quetta, where those charged with involvement in terrorist activities are held, is notorious for severe tales of torture during interrogation. Most of the prisoners there are either Baloch nationalists or the LeJ militants. Of the 50-plus LeJ henchmen who are being tried in Quetta for their involvement in terrorist activities, over two dozen are being kept at the ATF jail. It is the same prison where the chief of the LeJ’s Balochistan chapter Usman Kurd and his second-in-command Dawood Badini were being kept till January 18, 2008. The spokesman further said, “The Mujahideen of the LeJ will continue to kill Shias regardless of the imposition of the Governor’s rule or the deployment of the Army. We will protect the honor of Islamic Caliphs by sacrificing each and every one of us. The February 16 Fidayeen attack by a vehicle bomber was the second one in the Shia dominated area since the beginning of 2013. Let me inform the Shia Hazaras that we have 20 more such vehicles which are packed with lethal explosives and ready to hit the enemy. We are only waiting for next orders from our leadership to hit our targets in Alamdar Road, Mehrabad and Hazara Town. We are neither afraid of the Governor’s Rule nor the Pakistan Army and we will continue to kill Shias Hazaras in their homes”.

The letter addressed to Shiekh’s wife read, "Your husband is addressing a press conference about Sarabjit Singh. If this is held, it would be the last day of your husband and every single member of your family will be killed. You will find dead bodies of your children by tomorrow morning.” Shiekh claimed he was barred from holding a planned news conference at the Lahore Press Club to launch his book on Sarabjit. He said, "The reality of Sarabjit's case will be known to the people through this book. A gross mischarge of justice has been done in Sarabjit's case."

The ‘chief’ operational commander of the al Qaeda linked Punjabi Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Asmatullah Muawiya has warned that India is set to become a major target of terrorist attacks once again, especially after the Allied Forces withdraw from Afghanistan on March 11, reports Kashmir Watch. Muawiya’s statement has been released on an al-Qaeda and TTP-linked jehadi website - Jamia Hafsa Urdu Forum – in which he has also praised two terrorists – Ajmal Kasab of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Afzal Guru of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) who had been sent to the gallows in recent months by the Indian Government for their roles in the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack and the December 12, 2001 fidayeen attack on the Indian Parliament in Delhi. Muawiya’s latest threat of terrorist attacks in India comes two months after he made a conditional ceasefire offer to the Pakistan Government which envisaged an end to Islamabad’s participation in the Afghanistan war and the reshaping of the Constitution and foreign policy according to the Quran and Sunnah. The ceasefire offer was made through a letter which was later endorsed by the TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan, saying it had the full backing of the TTP leadership.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on March 11, warned the Government of a severe backlash if it continues making claims of having broken the back of the militants in operations in different parts of the countries northwest, reports The Times of India. A statement issued by the TTP made a veiled reference to Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik's remarks that the Government had the militants in a corner thanks to its counter-terrorism strategy and rejected demands for a ceasefire ahead of any peace talks. Malik also said that the people should unite to root out terrorism as Pakistan was moving towards "durable peace". The TTP said people calling on the militants to declare a ceasefire should seek an end to air strikes in Pakistan's tribal areas. "Have those asking us to take serious steps ever called for a halt to the bombing of tribal regions by the Pakistan Air Force and American drones," said the statement issued by TTP spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan. "We had offered peace talks in the national interest but secular elements did not like our serious offer and they have started making non-serious demands," Ihsan said. Certain elements were describing the Taliban's offer of talks as a sign of weakness, he said. "Such remarks can force us into making a fearsome response," he said. The TTP statement further called on the Government to act quickly on its offer for talks as time was running out. The militants have made several offers for talks to the Government but TTP ‘chief’ Hakimullah Meshud has made it clear that his fighters will not disarm. The Government has insisted that the militants should lay down arms and declare a truce before any talks.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has set up a special death squad to target former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf upon his arrival, who is expected to land in Karachi on March 24, says a militant video released on March 23, reports Dawn. The TTP has also called upon the Baloch insurgents to join hands with the militant outfit to wage a joint-war for implementing Shariah laws in the country. In about a six-minute long video received by Dawn, the TTP has threatened to use suicide bombers, snipers and combat teams to kill Musharraf. Speaking to Dawn earlier, TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan had said the group had set up squads of suicide bombers to assassinate the former president. “Suicide bombers are being trained and assigned to assassinate” the former president, Ehsan said. Moreover, Adnan Rasheed, who took part in a previous attempt to assassinate Musharraf, has been given the charge of these suicide squads. Rasheed is a former junior technician of Pakistan Air Force who was on death row after getting convicted by a field general court martial for engineering an attack on Musharraf in December 2003. He was among the prisoners who had escaped during the April 15, 2012 Bannu jail break. “Pervez Musharraf, you can see this death squad around me. We warn you to surrender yourself to us otherwise we would hit you from where you would never imagine you can be hit,” says Adnan Rashid appearing in the video wearing military uniform with his hooded fighters carrying assault rifles. The video also shows the newly-formed death squad fighters, being taught military drills by Rashid.

Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and other militant groups have threatened to launch a fresh wave of violence during the run-off to the general elections and have urged voters to boycott the poll in Balochistan. Baloch militant groups that have been leading a struggle to for the “freedom for the people in Balochistan,” accused the Pakistan Government of suppressing the movement through the abducting of political activists and then torturing them into submission. Balochistan Republican Party (BRP) Chairperson Brahamdagh Khan Bugti and Baloch nationalist leader Hyrbyar Marri have also urged the Baloch parliamentary parties to boycott the polls. Brahamdagh Bugti in a statement has said that the Baloch population will boycott the elections and will simultaneously work to convince the international community to undertake a United Nations-sponsored referendum to determine the Baloch demand for establishing a free and democratic state.

Dara Adam Khel chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) warned the teachers to boycott the polling process “in order to avoid punishment”, reports Daily Times. The warning has been issued through pamphlets distributed in various schools, residences of teachers in different areas of Peshawar, like Sarband, Salman Khel, Masho Khel and some areas located in Badbher. Local found the pamphlets and informed the Police, who gathered the letters for investigation and to determine who distributed them. According to the letter, TTP Dara Adam Khel has announced that “we are against those people who are working for democracy and these people are the enemies of the Islam who want to destabilise our country and Islam through democracy”. Through the pamphlet, the TTP has also demanded that people support the TTP, through money or participation in jihad and reject the election. The TTP also warned the teachers and citizens that they should not participate in election work.

A businessman, Hanif, who is also father-in-law of a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader, Sadaqat Abbasi, has been receiving threats from suspected Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, who have been demanding PKR 100 million to help them in their ‘noble cause of Jihad’, Dawn reported on May 22. Police said that a militant went to the business offices of Raja Hanif in his absence and delivered a letter and a USB (data storage device) for him. Sadaqat Abbasi who contested the May 11 elections on a PTI ticket for a Murree seat – said in his statement recorded by the Police that the letter was written on the pad of the banned TTP outfit. “It was inscribed with extortion and life threats,” he said, adding that he was stunned on seeing the USB. The complainant said: “Two men suspected to be Taliban were visible in the USB. They were saying that they were doing Jihad and wanted to use my wealth for the noble cause.” He had received threats twice in the last ten days, since the delivery of the letter and the USB to his offices, Hanif added. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on May 26 issued a fresh threat to assassinate former President General (retired) Pervez Musharraf, currently detained in his palatial farmhouse in Islamabad, over a string of high-profile cases, reports Daily Times. TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan issued a fresh warning in a video message posted on TTP website Umar Media, saying, “Soon we will punish this Satan (devil) to death for his wicked deed”. Musharraf went to the top of the Taliban hit list after ordering the army in 2007 to storm the Red Mosque in Islamabad (Federal capital). The operation left more than 100 people dead and opened the floodgates to militant attacks in Pakistan. From Balochistan to Waziristan, Musharraf threw this country in blood and fire, he is the killer of hundreds of innocent students of Lal Masjid (red Mosque).” Before his arrival in March, the TTP had threatened to kill him for his alliance in the United States (US)-led “war on terror” and attempts to clamp down on militants, when he was in power.

Quoting Police officials Dawn on July 15 (today) reported that Haji Gulzar Awan, a resident of Westridge-1 in Rawalpindi District, who had contested 2013 election from NA-57 on Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) ticket, has been receiving extortion threats allegedly from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) who are demanding PKR 50 million from him. Awan complained to the Police that he had received three long interval threat calls from extortionists who also threatened of abducting him if he failed to meet their demand. When a senior police official was contacted, he said Haji Gulzar Awan, after receiving extortion calls, went to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Israr Ahmed Abbasi and informed the Police that the caller, who spoke Pashto, identified himself as a member of the TTP and demanded ransom. He added that he had received three similar phone calls so far. Abbasi had received a threat letter along with a USB containing the video and pictures of the suspected TTP militants. However, the Police have so far been unable to trace any clue which could lead to the extortionists. Earlier, Raja Hanif Abbasi, a wealthy businessman from Murree, had also received extortion and life threats allegedly from the TTP, which demanded PKR100 million from him, Police said.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) on August 8 issued a substantial alert to Delhi Police over a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terror threat as the national capital prepares to celebrate Independence Day, reports New Indian Express. Communications among LeT members that were intercepted by intelligence officials disclosed the planning of a spectacular attack by LeT modules who managed to sneak into Indian territory. Senior intelligence officials confirmed that 12 terror modules crossed over to the Indian side recently and inputs forwarded to police are based on the technical interception by the agency. Hindustan Times adds LeT founder and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed resumed his now familiar rant against India at a massive Eid gathering in the Pakistani city of Lahore on August 9. The alert, received by the Delhi Police reportedly reads, "Hafiz Saeed in Pakistan's Karachi has said it is important to spread 'jihad' to all corners of India... A Red Fort-type attack needs to be carried out again." "The alert quotes a paragraph from a speech by Saeed last month in Karachi, where he openly threatened that his terrorists would carry out an attack in Delhi," a senior police officer said.

The Punjab chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on August 12 warned the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Government of dire consequences if it carries on with its plan of executing some convicts on death row, reports Dawn. In a pamphlet distributed in Southern Punjab and South and North Waziristan Agencies of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the TTP said that the Government will be considered at war with them if it goes on to execute their colleagues currently serving jail terms and are on death row. The pamphlet also warned the PML-N Government to be wary of blindly following the Pakistan Army as it said the Armed Forces use political forces for their own gains. “They (Pak Army) will be in favour of yet another political force after alienating them at due time.” “Remember what happened to Awami National Party (ANP)….. No one would now go to them even for condolences,” said the pamphlet. It said the drone attack on Waliur Rehman was a planned conspiracy of “pro-America generals” to sabotage their ‘wish’ for peace. “Execution of prisoners will prove to be next episode of that conspiracy,” said the pamphlet. The purpose of this conspiracy is to push the PML-N and its allies into the swamp, it added.

Elders in Sheikhan village in Peshawar on August 29 received their third letter in less than two months, warning them to either kill a local woman accused of ‘ill character’ or hand her over to Lashkar-e-Islam (LI), reported The Express Tribune. The letters were sent to an Afghan prayer leader and directly addressed village elders, blaming the woman for immoral behaviour. Militants have asked villagers to hand over the married woman if they cannot kill her, saying LI will ‘take care of her.’ Fearing for their own safety, village elders are unable to decide what to do. They summoned the woman’s husband and handed him the letters, which he then took and quietly left. The elders, however, know the house of the accused woman is just a stone’s throw from Khyber Agency and the militants can come take her away at any time. Fortunately, they have agreed to not obey the instructions of militants to kill her. “We cannot kill people for them,” said an elder requesting anonymity. Reshma said her only crime is answering the door when her husband, who is a government employee, is away at work. “I have eight children and am at least 45 years old. I‘m no longer a girl, but even then they have been after me since the past few months,” she added. “I am not a woman of bad character, but these militants are creating trouble for us and we suspect the involvement of our neighbours in this. My husband has already vowed to resist any such attempt to hand me over to Lashkar-e-Islam.”

Since the last eight to nine days the staff members of the BBC instead of working in the office have confined themselves to their houses and are working from there, sources further said. The threats may be a reaction to the documentary on Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain broadcast by the BBC. The documentary sparked an unprecedented response from the MQM which termed it fake and Taliban-sponsored propaganda.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on November 24 warned the Pakistani media to stop praising Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar who retired on November 16, 2013 after a 24-year career, reports Daily Times. A spokesman for the militants said Pakistanis should get behind their embattled captain Misbahul Haq, even though he was a “substandard and low-level player”. Shahidullah Shahid, the main ‘spokesman’ for the TTP said it was time for Pakistanis to shut up about the “Little Master”. “There is an Indian cricket player called Tendulkar. He has been exceedingly praised by Pakistani media and also praised by a lot of Pakistanis,” Shahid said in a video message, flanked by two masked men with AK-47s. “Now someone should tell Pakistani media and other Pakistanis that no matter how good Tendulkar is, they should not praise him, it is against Pakistani nationalism and against loyalty to the country.” “No matter that Misbahul Haq is a substandard and low-level player, Pakistani media should praise him because he is a Pakistani,” Shahid said in the video published online during the weekend. Shahid on November 28 confirmed the authenticity of the video over telephone from an undisclosed location.

Senator Raza Rabbani and Senator Zahid Khan have received threatening letters, suggestive of serious consequences for demanding a treason trial against former President General (retired) Pervez Musharraf, reported The Express Tribune on December 5. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan made this revelation and speculated that the letters were written by a Musharraf supporter. Both letters were received through National Assembly and Senate secretariats and both were hand written. In April this year, Rabbani and Khan along with other senators had called for Musharraf to be tried under Article 6 of the Constitution for abrogating the Constitution and derailing democracy. Raza Rabbani said that he had received the first letter ten days ago, threatening him that if he didn’t review his stance on Article 6, he could be assassinated or kidnapped. In second letter, the names of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Zahid Khan were also included. The Government assured to initiate serious action on the threatening letters.

The JeI chief said the Government had launched the North Waziristan offensive to please the United States (US) though it was against national interest. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on December 27 warned to his political rivals engaged in anti-drone protests against pushing the country into isolation in the international arena and said his Government desired peace and friendship with other countries, reports Dawn. “Our effort is to transform the existing friendly ties into mutually beneficial partnerships. We live in a globalised world where no one can afford isolation at any level,” he said. He cautioned that isolation led a state to alienation from the world community. He did not make any direct reference to the ongoing suspension of NATO supplies through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa because of protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jama’at-e-Islami (JeI) against drone attacks, but his comments were obvious about the subject and people he intended to address. Prime Minister Sharif’s remarks came as the anti-drone protests spread to Balochistan for blocking the second land route used by NATO for shipment to and from Afghanistan.
