An Urdu pamphlet distributed by ‘Jandula Studio of Harkat-e-Islami Uzbekistan’ said that Tahir’s blood would not “go waste” and his followers would continue to wage jihad (Holy War). Yuldashev was reported to have been killed in a strike by a US drone in Kaniguram town of South Waziristan on August 27, 2009. A website run by the IMU group announced the death of their leader and posted an image of his dead body. The website also displayed two images of Yuldahsev, who was described as “Shaheed Muhammad Tahir”. The site also named Usmon Odil as Yuldashev’s successor. Odil, in his own online address to followers, confirmed that Yuldashev had been killed on August 27, 2009 in a US drone attack. The IMU denied reports of Yuldashev’s death for almost a year, Odil said, because its members “were waging stepped-up battles in Afghanistan and especially in Pakistan against the enemies of Islam,” he said. “This sorrowful event occurred unexpectedly, and the IMU leadership, departing from the norms of sharia for jihad, decided to keep the information secret,” he added.

The ‘master trainer’ of suicide bombers and second-in-command of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Qari Hussain Mehsud, is reported to have been killed in the October 4 US drone attack in Mirali town of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Dawn reported on October 15. However, TTP contradicted reports about Qari Hussain’s death and described it as part of a campaign to demoralise its fighters. “Qari Hussain is alive and healthy and will soon contact the media,” one of his associates said over phone. There are two different accounts of the October 4 drone attack. According to one report, Qari Hussain was injured in the attack on a house in Mirali in which eight foreigners, including German militants, were killed. Intelligence sources said those killed included Qari Hussain, known as Ustad-i-Fedayeen (teacher of suicide bomber), and his two guards. Qari Hussain, who was sleeping in the house, was severely injured and taken to Miramshah where doctors amputated one of his legs and he died there, intelligence sources added. According to another report, Qari Hussain was hit in the attack and he died on the spot.
