Around 20 militants were killed by the troops during clashes in the Darra Adam Khel and Kohat areas of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on January 26, according to Daily Times. Gunship helicopters pounded suspected Taliban positions in the mountains near Darra Adam Khel and Kohat district, eyewitnesses and the military spokesman said. Security officials said the militants had taken position at hilltops overlooking Darra and Kohat and were using long-range rockets to target civilians in Kohat city. Meanwhile, Abdullah Halafi, a self-proclaimed spokesman for a Taliban group, threatened the militants would launch attacks on government forces in the Khyber Agency if attacks on their comrades in Darra did not stop. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that the Kohat Tunnel was in the control of militants. Abbas said security forces were progressing and operation for the control of the tunnel would be launched any time soon. Reports, however, said the tunnel – also known as the Pak-Japan Friendship Tunnel – was only attacked and damaged by militants. The extent of damage to the tunnel was, however, not clear.

12 people, including five militants, five civilians and two Pakistan Army soldiers, were killed while eight militants and four soldiers were injured in clashes between the security forces (SFs) and militants on January 28, according to The News. There were reports of heavy clashes between the two sides in various parts of the Mehsud-inhabited areas of South Waziristan such as Makin, Ladha, Torwam and Tiarza in which military authorities said militants suffered significant losses. Besides gunship choppers and artillery shelling on militants’ positions, the Army called two fighters which targeted the strongholds of Baitullah Mehsud’s militants in the Makin and Ladha towns. Military authorities said a number of militants were killed while their hideouts destroyed in the bombardment. The Army also reportedly fired mortar and artillery shells from military camps in Razmak and Jandola on the militants’ hide-outs in Kaza Panga, Dher Narai, Shaga, Treekh Narai, Wrasta Bazeena and Shaktoi areas in which officials said five militants were killed. They said intercepts from militants suggested that eight of their colleagues were wounded. In the Mohammad Nawaz Kot area near Makin, militants attacked a security post manned by the Pakistan Army soldiers. In the ensuing encounter, two soldiers died and four others were injured.

A missile apparently fired by a pilot-less plane hit a house in a village near Mir Ali in North Waziristan late on January 28-night, killing 15 people - 10 suspected militants, two women and three minors, according to The News. Intelligence sources said those killed also included Arab nationals but their identity was not known. A militant source told Daily Times by phone that five men "speaking the language of the holy Quran" were among the dead, suggesting that Arab militants were among the victims. The targeted house was in Khushali Torikhel, 12 kilometers south of Mir Ali town. The owner of the house, Madad Khan, believed to be a Taliban militant, survived the attack while his guests sleeping in the Hujra (male guesthouse) died in the missile strike at 1:15 am, and so did two women and three minors of his family. It was not clear where the missiles were fired from, Daily Times reported. Residents, however, claimed that an unmanned spy plane, of a type often used by US forces in Afghanistan, was involved in the attack. The plane is capable of firing missiles and taking photographs from a considerable altitude. "We recognise the sound and shape of the American drone and two such planes have been hovering in the sky since Monday afternoon, and people have seen them over Mir Ali and Miranshah," said local residents.

Senior al Qaeda commander Abu Laith Al-Libi has been killed in Pakistan, CNN quoted "a knowledgeable Western official and an unnamed military official" as saying, according to Daily Times. The 41-year-old Libyan was active in operational planning and training, and according to the US official, "not far below the importance of the top two al Qaeda leaders" – Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al-Zawahiri. He was placed on the US military’s most wanted list in 2006, behind Laden, Zawahiri and Taliban leader Mullah Omar. AP news agency said a Website used by militant groups carried a statement in the name of Al-Fajr, al Qaeda’s media wing, saying "he was martyred with a group of his brothers in the land of Muslim Pakistan." The statement was referring to a missile strike at Khushali Torikhel in North Waziristan on January 28. 10 militants, two women and three minors had died in the missile strike. However, a US military official with the Combined Joint Task Force-82, the anti-terror unit responsible for searching Libi in Afghanistan, told CNN he had no information on Al-Libi’s death, but added that CJTF-82 did not collect information from outside of Afghanistan and would be informed of targeted operations only "if the Pakistani military share that with us". AP said Pakistan’s Interior Ministry officials did not confirm Al-Libi’s death and were "still trying to gather details on the missile strike." Pakistani Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema told AFP that "We have no information of his killing."

At least 17 people – including 13 Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel – were killed on July 12-afternoon in a clash between Taliban and security forces (SFs) in the Hangu district of NWFP, reports Daily Times. The fighting erupted after Taliban militants ambushed an FC convoy in the Drori Banda area of Hangu. The dead also included three civilians and a local militant, residents and Taliban sources said. Member of the National Assembly Pir Haidar Shah and the Hangu district nazim said the dead included FC district officer Muhammad Karim Khan. Shah said the FC convoy was heading towards the volatile town of Hangu from its fort in Drori Banda when it came under attack from Taliban at around 5.30 pm (PST). According to Geo News, the FC troops fired mortar shells at the hilly hideouts of the Taliban and called for helicopter gunship to provide air cover. The channel reported that the bodies of FC personnel were still lying in the Drori area and SFs were unable to move the corpses, as the area is under Taliban control. An unnamed FC official said that the FC troops killed in the clash numbered to 17. He said the militants had also taken an FC vehicle after the clash. The district administration declared emergency in nearby hospitals soon after the incident.

The Pakistan Army, the Frontier Constabulary (FC) and the Frontier Police launched an operation on July 16 in the Naryab and Zargari areas of Doaba Town in Hangu district, attacking hideouts of militants with gunship helicopters and artillery fire, The News reported. There were unconfirmed reports that heavy shelling killed one person in Tora Warai while four others sustained injuries in Naryab. Curfew is already in place in Doaba town since July 9 when the police had launched a crackdown on certain groups. Educational institutions, bazaars and roads in the area have been closed for the last one week and the local people are reportedly migrating to safer places. “The Army and the police have launched the operation in Naryab, which was later extended to Zargari and other areas to eliminate groups that are threatening peace in Hangu. So far there is no report of any casualty,” District Police Officer, Mohammad Idrees, told The News from Hangu. The officer said that no hideout had been demolished in the operation. After getting air cover from choppers, the troops reportedly moved to Naryab town with tanks and armoured personnel carriers at around 12 noon to take over the stronghold of the local militants, who had recently killed 17 FC personnel during an ambush in Zargari and occupied the Doaba police station. Spokesman for the militants in Hangu, Maulvi Haider, alleged that the Taliban had assured the Jirga (council) of not carrying out any attack but despite that the Government had moved the security forces against them. According to a local resident, there are about 200 to 300 militants in different villages of Doaba but the rest had come from the adjacent tribal areas.

Hangu District Co-ordination Officer Shahab Ali told reporters that the security forces were “combing the area” to drive militants out of the town and its suburbs. Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah said the situation in Hangu district was under control after the military operation. Talking to reporters in Islamabad after a Senate committee meeting, Shah said Taliban leader BaitullahMehsud was behind the violence in the district. Meanwhile, the NWFP Home Secretary TipuMahabat Khan told reporters in provincial capital Peshawar that the Government would launch further operations were the state writ challenged. Khan added the operation was inevitable to tackle the situation in Hangu as militants were kidnapping people on the roads, obstructing development works and threatening non-government organisations. A military official claimed that the objectives of the Hangu operation codenamed “Operation Zarb-e-Kaleem” have been achieved. According to Dawn News, Major General Khalid Rabbani, the operation commander, said that although troops faced serious resistance in some areas, the operation has achieved its objectives.

48 militants, including a commander, and five soldiers were killed and an unspecified number of people were injured as fierce clashes continued in the Swat Valley of the NWFP for the second consecutive day on July 30, The News reported. The fighting erupted on July 29 after the militants attacked a security post in their stronghold in the Matta sub-division and took about 25 security force (SF) personnel hostage. After the overnight targeting of various militants’ positions, the SFs, backed by gunship helicopters, carried out an operation and shelled suspected militant positions in several parts of the valley, including Peuchar, Namal, Ronial, Sarbanda and Chuprial that left 48 persons dead and as many injured. The Taliban militants also claimed killing 25 SF personnel, but the claim could not be confirmed independently. A military spokesman said in the daylong clashes with the militants, one officer, a junior officer and three soldiers were killed. The two sides clashed in the Sijbanr area of Matta in which, according to the military spokesman, approximately 25 militants were killed. In the Sarbanda area of Matta, hundreds of militants attacked the troops and claimed killing 30 SF personnel. The claim was rejected by the military, which said that only two officers and three soldiers were killed in the attack. Further, SFs also killed 12 militants and injured several others when they attacked the militants, who had laid siege to the Matta police station. The militants targeted the Wenai check-post with rockets and one militant was killed when the troops retaliated. Backed by gunship helicopters, the SFs also attacked suspected positions of the militants in the mountainous area of Peuchar, killing ‘commander’ Maulvi Hussain Ali alias Tor Mulla and 10 others. The attack also left six militants, including commander Nisar, injured. In the Jura area of Matta, shelling by the Army gunship helicopters injured 13 people. In the Shangwatai area of Matta, two persons were killed as the peach orchard, they were working in, was targeted by military gunship helicopters. In addition, approximately 24 mortar shells landed in Nihag Darra area on the Swat-Dir border injuring two persons. The militants also blew up a Government hotel in Malam Jabba, which they had torched earlier, and an Army rest house in the Charbagh sub-division. They also blew up a Government girls’ school in Gulibagh and bridges in the Gurra, Ronial and other areas of Matta. The local military officials said curfew across the Swat Valley would remain in place till further notice. The militants also blocked roads in Kabal sub-division, Chota Kalam, Ningwalai and other mountainous areas with huge boulders and tree trunks suspending traffic on the Matta-Mingora road. Muslim Khan, spokesman for the local Taliban, told Associated Press that only five militants had been killed in the clashes and claimed that they had killed more than 30 soldiers. "The morale of our Taliban is high and security forces are retreating in several areas," he claimed. He said the militants were fighting in self-defence and blamed the Government for "not honouring" the May 2008 peace agreement. "If the Government doesn’t announce a formal end to this deal, neither will we," Khan said. Talks, for the moment, were out of question, he added.

A senior al Qaeda operative and 17 other militants were killed and several others sustained injuries when low-flying helicopters bombed their positions in the Bajaur Agency of the FATA, Dawn reported. Sources said Abu Saeed al-Masri alias Mustafa Mohammad Ahmad was killed in the air strike. The Egyptian-born Abu Saeed was reported to be a senior member of the Majlis-i-Shura and financial chief of al Qaeda. They said that Cobra helicopters precisely targeted militants’ positions in Shahnari, Haji Lawang, Ragha Dagg and Takht areas where security forces had been using air power since August 8. The helicopters attacked militants’ hideouts in Shahnari, killing 13 Taliban militants. They also hit four vehicles in Takht, killing five militants and injuring three others. However, a spokesman for the Tehrik-i-Taliban denied that any foreign militant had been killed, AFP reported. "I strongly contradict reports that Abu Saeed al-Masri was killed in Bajaur. There are no foreigners," Omar said. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said the security agencies had intelligence on presence of top al Qaeda operative Abu Mustafa Al Yazid but his death could not be confirmed as yet by "contacts on the ground", Daily Times reported.

Pakistan Air Force fighter aircraft and military gunship helicopters continued targeting suspected hideouts of militants in the Bajaur Agency, killing 21 more people, including three civilians, and injuring several others, The News reported. Official and tribal sources said that fighter aircraft and the Pakistan Army Cobra gunship choppers heavily bombarded suspected militant positions and hideouts in various parts of Bajaur Agency, including Pashat, Naraza and Mulla Said Banda in Salarzai sub-division and Inam Khwaro and Damadola in the Mamond sub-division. The officials claimed 12 militants were killed in the air strikes. In Jar Kalley of Utmankhel sub-division, a group of militants sitting on the roadside to target the troops through IEDs were targeted by gunship choppers that killed six militants. In Pashat village, three tribesmen, including an elder, were killed when his house came under attack from a warplane. There were complaints by the fleeing tribal populace that fighter aircraft and military choppers were mostly bombing civilian populations and villages rather than the militants still moving and operating freely in their strongholds in Mamond, Salarzai, Utmankhel and Inayat Kalley. Residents also complained that despite heavy bombing by the security forces for the past several days, the militants were still occupying roadside checkpoints and security posts vacated by the paramilitary Bajaur Scouts along the border with Afghanistan.

Twelve persons, most of them alleged foreign fighters, were killed and five others sustained injuries when a US Predator fired two Hellfire missiles on a house in the Zari Noor village of South Waziristan on August 20, The News reported. Military Spokesman Major General Athar Abbas confirmed the incident but said he would not confirm whether it was a missile or rocket attack. He said he had heard that 8-12 people had been killed in the explosions. The military spokesman, however, denied reports that a US Predator had fired Hellfire missiles on the Pakistani territory. Tribal sources said a house and Hujra (male guesthouse) owned by a local tribal elder, Mohammad Yaqub Mughalkhel Wazir, were hit by the missiles. "Before the attack at around 4 pm, a black colour plane was flying at a low altitude over the village and almost half-an-hour later another white colour plane fired two missiles that razed the buildings," said a local tribesman Mohammad Siyar Wazir. Militants affiliated to ‘commander’ Maulvi Nazeer reportedly cordoned off the village and the damaged buildings soon after the attack and barred the tribesmen from going to the incident site. Tribal sources based in Wana said the majority of those killed in the air strikes were reported to be Arab fighters staying as guests with the Wazir tribal elder.

A private jail and an ammunition depot of militants were among the air strike targets. A military spokesman in Swat told AFP that "a core of militants" had perished in the operation. "Their command and communications structure has also been destroyed. This was their key area where they had set up ammunition depots, which were also demolished… This strike was carried out after intelligence that top Taliban cleric Mullah Fazlullah was hiding there," the security official said, but he was unable to confirm if the main target was among the dead, according to Dawn. Military spokesman in Swat Major Nasir Ali told Dawn: "Ammunition dumps in the Peuchar area have been blown up in the heavy bombing. Smoke is billowing from the targeted site." Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said Taliban commander Mufti Saeedur Rehman and local journalist Abdul Aziz Shaheen, who was abducted two days ago, were also killed in the attack on the private jail. The spokesman claimed that 39 Government officials were also in the jail. He said the security forces (SFs) targeted 15 locations in the Matta sub-division of Swat, adding that Taliban leader Fazlullah was safe.

The security forces (SFs) claimed to have killed about 30 militants and wounded 35 others in a ground assault backed by gunship helicopters in the militants-infested Koza Bandai area of Swat Valley in the NWFP on September 3, The News reported. There were also reports about five civilian casualties, including four women, besides injuries to scores of others. Two SF personnel were reportedly killed and four others sustained injuries. SFs launched a ground assault in Koza Bandai, the native village of the Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan, at dawn on September 3 to clear the area of the militants. A Mingora-based military spokesman, Major Nasir Ali, told The News that 25 to 30 militants were killed and 30 to 35 were injured in the attack that was backed by gunship helicopters. He claimed that the militants had been flushed out of the area but "some pockets of resistance were still there," which, he added, "would be mopped up in the next stage of the operation". Giving details, Major Ali said militants had established themselves in the village and made the civilian population hostage. The area, he added, was a stronghold of the miscreants, which served as a launching pad for their terrorist activities in and around the suburbs of Mingora, the district headquarters of Swat. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said the SFs had destroyed 200 houses in the operation at Koza Bandai.

Four children, a woman and a man have been killed in the attack,” said intelligence officials. The attack occurred at Almakath village in the Gorveek area, 80 kilometers west of Miranshah. The two houses lie at ‘zero point’ on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. A tribesman in Miranshah said the village crisscrossed the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. “Half of the village is in Pakistan and the other half is in Afghanistan,” said Aqleem Khan. The army, however, denied that the strike had been carried out in Pakistan’s territory. “There was no strike on our side of the border. The news is incorrect,” military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP.

Daily Times reports that a suspected US drone fired two missiles on October 16 into South Waziristan, killing five people, including at least one foreigner, security officials said. "Two missiles were fired, completely destroying the house. Reports confirm five dead," an unnamed security official told AFP. There was no immediate confirmation of the strike from the Pakistani military or from the US-led coalition in neighbouring Afghanistan. Two Pakistani intelligence officials told the Associated Press that reports from informants and field agents suggested that one foreign member of the Taliban died in the attack and that another foreigner was injured. Asked if any Al Qaeda leaders had been hit, the officials said that while Arabs had been living in the house, the identities of the victims were not yet clear. They said the Taliban had frequented the house in a remote, forested area, since its owner fled the tribal region last year. Another intelligence agency official told Reuters five militants had been killed. "Guests were staying there," said a second official. The term is commonly used to refer to foreign militants. Witnesses told NNI the area is controlled by Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud.

Suspected US drones fired missiles on October 23 into a madrassa (seminary) set up by veteran pro-Taliban commander, Jalaluddin Haqqani, killing eight people and wounding six others, near Miranshah in the North Waziristan Agency of FATA, security officials said, according to Daily Times. "At 2:25am, two spy drones fired three missiles at the madrassa of Mullah Mansoor," an unnamed security official said. "Eight militants were sleeping in the courtyard. All of them were killed. They were local militants," a villager standing at the scene of the strike told Reuters. Security officials said the Madrassa Sirajul Uloom – three kilometres from Miranshah near Danday Darpa Khel on the Miranshah-Afghanistan road – was set up by Haqqani during the 1980s ‘jihad’ against Soviet forces in Afghanistan. It was currently run by one of Haqqani’s commanders, Mullah Mansoor, and was recently used as a guesthouse for ‘international and local students travelling from other areas’, they told AFP. The earlier missile strike on September 8 targeting another house owned by Haqqani killed 23 people, including members of Haqqani’s extended family, security officials said.
