They were disappointed with the ‘hollow Maoist ideology’ and were encouraged by the ‘Lon Varratu’ (return to your home) campaign of the District Police. Eight Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including a woman, surrendered before Security Forces (SFs) in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 18, reports The Pioneer. The Maoists laid down their arms under the ‘Lon Varratu’ (Return to your home/village) campaign of the District Police. Of the eight, Suresh Oyami (20) was active as a member of Platoon No 13 under ‘Bhairamgarh Area Committee’ of the Maoists and carried a reward of INR 200,000 on his head. Three others – Jogi Madvi (19), Pradip alias Pandru Kovasi (20) and Sule Kawasi (35), carried rewards of INR 100,000 each. The other four (identity not reported) were part of CPI-Maoist’s lower hierarchy. “All of them were involved in attacks on police teams, planting explosives and damaging government property, including railway tracks, and killings of civilians in Dantewada and Bijapur Districts,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava said.

24 cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) surrendered before Security Forces (SFs) in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 26, reports Hindustan Times. Among them, 12 were women cadres, including three, carrying a reward of INR 300,000 on their heads. The cadres were fed-up with the ‘hollow Maoist ideology’ and surrendered themselves under the ‘Lon Varratu’ (local Gondi dialect meaning - ‘Return Home’) scheme, of the District Police. “Total 24 Maoist cadres have surrendered on the Republic Day and most of them were lower-ranked cadres of the CPI-Maoist. Some important cadres include, Aaytu Muchaki (31), head of Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (DAKMS), Baman Denga Sodhi (40) and Kamli Madkam (32), who were carrying a reward of INR 100,000 each on their heads,” said the Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava.

Sixteen Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, two of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered to the Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 30, reports The Pioneer. The lower rung cadres who were active in Bacheli and Kirandul areas and surrendered in Kirandul town citing they were impressed by the rehabilitation of their former colleagues, Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava said. With this, 288 Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] have so far given up violence in the district under the 'Lon Varratu' (Return to your home) campaign, launched in June last year, Pallava said. Of the 16, Madkam Hurra (28), a Maoist ‘militia commander’, and Hunga Barsa (35), head of the local unit of the Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (DAKMS), carried rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads, Pallava added. 14 among the surrendered belonged to Madakamiras village. All the 16 were given immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 and will get facilities further as per the government's surrender and rehabilitation policy, the officer said.

Five cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a woman, surrendered in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 4, reports Outlook. The surrendered cadres included Gangualias Lakhan Kuhdam (38), ‘commander’ of ‘Bhairamgarh area committee’ of CPI-Maoist, who was wanted in at least 21 cases in Dantewada and neighbouring Bijapur District. Another surrendered Maoist – Laxmi alias Sanni Oyam (38), was the ‘commander’ in the same ‘Bhairamgarh area committee’ unit and allegedly involved in at least nine incidents of violence, including a landmine blast in 2004 in Jangla area of Bijapur. Both of them carried rewards of INR 500,000 each on their heads. The other surrendered cadres – Hemla Bandi (28), Kosa Madkam (23) and Madvi Hidma (18) – were lower-rung cadres. All of them were disappointed with the “hollow Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] ideology” and surrendered themselves under “Lon Varratu” (return to your home) campaign of the District Police.

Of the 13, Lakhma Midiyami, a ‘jan militia commander’, Bheema alias Kamlu Karma, ‘president of DKAMS (Dandakaranya Kisan Adivasi Mazdoor Sangh) – a frontal body of the CPI-Maoist, and Jogi Midiyami carried cash rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads. Narayanpur, Superintendent of Police (SP), Mohit Garg said, the Maoists, including three women, turned themselves in citing disappointment with the "hollow" Maoist ideology and increasing pressure of the Security Forces (SFs), and are identified as Mangesh Modiyam alias Mangu (24), his wife Hembati Salaam alias Manisha (27), Mase Podiami alias Sumitra (18) and Moti Usendi alias Laxmi (19). An official said, the surrendered cadres, Munna Padami (24), Pandru Padami (27), Ronda Veko (25), Sonku Alami (47), Aaytu Netam (30) and Raju alias Mata Netam (28), who were active in the Barsoor area committee of Maoists and worked as militia members of Maoists, said they were impressed by the Police's rehabilitation drive 'Lon Varratu' and disappointed with the "hollow" Maoist ideology. Of the surrendered, Munna, Pandru, Ronda, Sonku, were allegedly involved in different incidents of attacks on Police teams and looting civilians, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava said, adding that they were carrying a reward of INR 10,000 each on their heads. Two other ultras, Aaytu and Raju, were allegedly tasked with putting up Maoist posters and banners in the area, he added. With this surrender, 437 Maoist have so far quit violence in Dantewada under the 'Lon Varratu' (return to your home/village) campaign, which was launched in June last year, SP, Pallava said.

As many as 43 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘jan militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists), including nine women cadres, who were active in Chintagufa and Tongpal hotspots of Sukma, surrendered before Superintendent of Police (SP) Sunil Sharma in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on October 20, reports The Times of India. According to Police, all the ‘jan militia’ members wanted to return to the mainstream because they were disillusioned by the violent ideology of Maoists, and inspired by Sukma Police's campaign, 'Puna Narkom', which means 'new dawn' in a Gondi dialect. One of the Maoists carrying a reward of INR 100,000 was identified as Podium Lakshman, a ‘militia commander’, and the others are members of militia wing, Chetna Natya Manch (CNM), the cultural wing of the CPI-Maoist, and Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangh (DAKMS), a frontal wing of the Maoists, and natives of 10 villages in Sukma, including Chintagufa, Kukanar, Gadiras, and Tongpal. Out of the 14 ultras who surrendered, Sanna Markam (21), who was active as a Local Organisation Squad (LOS) member of Maoists, was allegedly involved in the Burkapal Maoist ambush in neighbouring Sukma District wherein 25 SF personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed in 2017, he said, adding that Markam was carrying a reward of INR 100,000 on his head. Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava identified them as Pojja alias Sanju Madvi (24), ‘commander’ of Maoist platoon number 9, and his wife Lakhe alias Tulsi Madvi (22), ‘commander’ of ‘Divisional Committee, DVC’ Suraksha Dalam (armed squad). Both of them were members of Pamed area committee, and carried cash bounties of INR 500,000 each. Pojja and Lakhe had played a crucial role in the Tekalguda attack in April this year that killed 22 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, injured 26, and led to the abduction of a Commando Battalion for resolute Action (CoBRA) commando who was released four days later. Pojja has at least 12 cases of violence at various Police Stations in Dantewada. The SP said that Pojja and wife were also involved in the 2020 Minpa attack on Security Forces (SFs) that killed 26 personnel and injured 20. Pojja's job was to lay the ambush, loot weapons, torch vehicles engaged in construction work. Pojja played role in almost all the attacks executed in the region since 2012, say Police, adding, his wife Lakhe has about eight cases of crime registered against her in Dantewada, and was involved in the Burkapal ambush of 2017 in which 25 personnel were killed. According to Police, the Maoist couple surrendered because they were "disillusioned with the hollow and inhuman ideologies of Maoists". The duo has also said local cadres were being discriminated against and dominated by senior Telugu cadres.
