Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including a couple surrendered before the Guntur Superintendent of Police (SP, Rural), J Satyanarayana, on January 1, reports The Hindu. U. Kumari alias Renuka of Gangalakunta village near Veldurthy had joined Chandravanka dalam (armed squad) in 2003 and went on to become a member of the Bollapalli military platoon and ‘RK and Madhav protection teams’. She later moved to Chhattisgarh where she worked as an area committee member and instructor. The other two Maoists, Bommanaboyina Akkayya alias Rameswar and his wife Guravamma alias Renuka were members of the Chandravanka dalam.

Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including a couple, surrendered before Khammam Superintendent of Police (SP), AV Ranganath on March 24, reports The Hindu. The Maoists include T Lokanadham alias Lokesh (52), Maoist area committee member, a native of Kothagudem, his wife G Samrajyam alias Seetha (48), area committee member, belonging to Kothapeta in Bayyaram mandal (administrative unit), and Mora Ravi (35), member of Narasampet-Kothagudem squad. According to the SP, Lokanadham, an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) (Printing Technology) diploma holder, worked for the outfit’s magazine “Kranthi” from Chennai in the 90s. He was deputy commander of Bayyaram dalam (armed squad) for some time before moving to the Bastar region. He was closely associated with the printing and circulation of the outfit’s magazine “Pithuri” along with his wife Samrajyam in south Bastar area in the past.

Twenty five Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a ‘commander’ and two ‘deputy commanders’, village committees and sympathisers, surrendered to Superintendent of Police (Visakhapatnam Rural) G. Srinivas, on April 22, reports The Hindu. The surrendered persons, except two of them, belonged to Balapam Panchayat (village level local self government institution) in Chintapalli mandal (administrative unit), a Maoist stronghold the in Visakha agency. Militia ‘commander’ Gabbadi Appannadora, ‘deputy commanders’ Batchali Ramana, both from Balapam and Vanthala Chanti of Balarevula were among those who surrendered. They are all aged between 22 and 50 years. A ‘Vidya Volunteer’ Batchali Chiranjeevi, who studied Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and worked as security guard in a hospital here and a school, B. Babu Rao who studied B.Sc. (computers), B. Papa Rao, a B.A. degree holder and B. Chanti Babu, a ITI certificate holder, were among those who surrendered. Militia members, village committee members and sympathisers provide important logistic support to armed Maoists. Their surrender was the outcome of Sadbhavana Yatras (goodwill tours) conducted by the District Police in the recent past. Along with Srinivas, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Visakha Range) Swati Lakra, Additional SP (Operations) A.R. Damodhar and other Police officers visited the families of militia members and Maoists in interior villages and impressed upon them to get their sons and daughters to surrender.

A woman Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commander’, carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on her head, surrendered before the Warrangal District Police, on April 23, reports Zee News. District Superintendent of Police (SP), A Venkateshwar Rao said, "Shanigarapu Uma alias Anitha, who was carrying reward of INR 5 lakh [500,000], surrendered voluntarily this evening. She has nearly 35 offences registered against her in Warangal District". Anitha is the wife of Gajerla Ashok alias Janardhan, who is the in-charge of ‘military wing’ in Gadchiroli Division. The SP said Anitha had joined the rebels in 1997 and started working as the team commander of doctors. She had been arrested on two occasions in the past. She also handed over a sten gun to the Police.

Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, earlier operating in Odisha, surrendered before the Vizianagaram (Vizianagaram District) Police on May 24, due to differences with the party leadership, reports The Times of India. Tadangi Vujjey alias Mallesh of Chintaguda and ‘militia platoon commander’ Mandangi Ramesh of Manjiriguda, both in Borigi area of Narayanpatna block of Koraput District (Odisha) and ‘militia member’ Nachika Ruhini of the Manjiriguda area decided to come overground and surrender. According to Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police (SP) Kartikeya, the trio decided to surrender because Maoists were killing innocent tribals by labelling them as Police informers and were also obstructing the construction of roads and school buildings. Mandangi Ramesh and Mallesh were involved in the attack on the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) camp at Nalco (Koraput District) in 2009, in which 10 Security Forces (SFs) were killed.

Four Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including a husband-wife and another couple on June 5 surrendered before the Police in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam and Khammam Districts, reports The Times of India. Maoists - Arun and his companion Uma - eloped and came out of the dalam (squad) and surrendered before the Police. Arun, carrying INR 400,000 on his head, was working for the past nine years with Special Guerilla Squad of Maoists, which is also considered to the rank of Area Committee Member (ACM), Police said, adding that Uma was carrying a cash reward of INR 100,000.

A Naxal [Left Wing Extremist (LWE)] belonging to Praja Prathighatana surrendered in the presence of Superintendent of Police (Urban) A. Venkateswara Rao in Warangal District on June 27, reports The Hindu. Madipeddi Balaiah alias Anjanna worked in Mohananna squad of Praja Prathighatana group. He belonged to Pegadapelli village of Kothaguda mandal and joined the group in 1984. He worked in various squads within the group but had also surrendered in the past when he found his agriculture field had been encroached and he could not recover it. Following Mohan’s assurance, he again joined the group. However, having waited for long, he was unable to recover the land and surrendered to the Police again.

‘Commander’ of Jana Natya Mandali, a front organisation of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), Korra Sattibabu alias Sathish, who carried a reward of INR 400,000 on his head along with his wife Pathruni Ramanamma and two others, who all came out of the banned party, surrendered in front of Superintendent of Police Vikramjeet Duggal at Narsipatnam in Vishakhapatnam District on September 5, reports The Hindu. The other two were Gammeli Ramunaidu alias Ramesh and Korra Chittibabu. According to a press release from the SP’s office, Sathish, who is of the rank of area committee member of the party and carried an SLR, joined the CPI-Maoist in 2003. He is a native of Rallametta in Koyyuru mandal. He was involved in exchanges of fire in the past and attacks on former local body members before the recent Panchayat elections.
