Three senior cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) were shot dead and another cadre was abducted by the rival National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) militants in a hideout at Mingkong in the Mokokchung district on January 14, for their alleged involvement in extortion, reports Telegraph. The NSCN-IM said the killings were necessary to prevent "illegal collection of money in and around Mokokchung". Meanwhile, the NSCN-K said the raid on its hideout and the killings were in violation of the cease-fire between the two factions since December 7, 2007.

Additional Superintendent of Police, V.Z. Angami who led the search operations said ten persons, including a lady, were arrested from one hideout while remaining four persons were arrested from another place. Police recovered eight mobile handsets, one 7.65 pistol with five rounds, one .9mm pistol with eight live rounds and some documents from their possession. Police said the fourteen arrested were part of the same gang, which had earlier abducted three drivers belonging to Food Corporation of India in Manipur. While two drivers were released after they reportedly paid INR 8, 000 to the abductors, the other driver identified as Asem Angou, a resident of Lambia Challou in the Imphal East district in Manipur, who was kept in confinement for non payment of ransom, was rescued by police on November 6.

A timber trader from Manipur, Chongtham Sanjoy alias Dada, was assaulted severely by some armed persons who identified themselves as National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) cadres at Dimapur, in connection with a monetary demand of INR 10, 5000, according to Snagai Express. Along with Sanjoy, two persons, Naorem Pakpi of Chingamakha Irom Leikai and Ringphami of Maileng village in the Ukhrul district, were abducted from a hotel at Dimapur on November 8-morning. They went to Dimapur in connection with timber trade after a consignment of timber was supplied there. On November 9, Ringphami and Pakpi were released and Sanjoy was held back. Sanjoy’s family members received the threat phone call that Sanjoy would be killed in case of their failure to give INR 10, 5000 before 5 pm of November 10. On the request of Sanjoy’s family, the deadline was extended for some more time. Later, the family members managed to give INR 1, 00, 000 to the NSCN-IM cadres at an unspecified place in Ukhrul. Following the payment of ransom, Sanjoy was assaulted and released on November 13.
