Seven persons including three Taliban militants were killed and 16 people, including seven Security Forces (SFs), were injured in a suicide blast and a retaliatory clash between SFs and Taliban at a commercial plaza in Mingora city of Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on May 1, reports Daily Times. Operation Rah-e-Rast (path to truth) in-charge Major General Ashfaq Nadeem told Daily Times, four Taliban had also been killed. He said one of the Taliban blew himself up, while the remaining three were killed during a gunfight with SF. He said seven SF personnel had also been injured. Malakand Deputy Inspector General Qazi Jamilur Rehman confirmed that three civilians were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a commercial plaza. However, according to locals, SFs first surrounded five suicide bombers at the city’s Green Chowk. They said one bomber blew himself up in the plaza, a second was killed by the SFs, while a third managed to flee. They said the SFs arrested the remaining two suicide bombers.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) ‘chief’ Maulana Sami ul Haq on May 3 offered to mediate between the Government and the Taliban (TTP), reports Daily Times. Addressing a press conference after administrating oath to the party’s newly-elected Peshawar District cabinet at the Peshawar Press Club, the JUI-S urged the Government to initiate dialogue with the Taliban (TTP), as military operation was not a solution to any problem. Sami said the US and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai were in favour of dialogue but the Government was hesitant and was using force that could not bring peace to the troubled region. “Despite repeated calls, the Government is unmoved and using the military option and bombing its own citizens,” he added.

The Times Square bomber, Faisal Shahzad, confessed of his involvement and is cooperating with investigators who are seeking details about his contacts in Pakistan, postponing indefinitely any court appearance, said law-enforcement sources on May 5, reports Daily Times. The focus of investigations shifted to Pakistan and a United States (US) Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) team visited Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to gather evidence. Faisal Shahzad (30) stands formally charged with five terrorism-related counts, and faces life in prison if convicted. He was not yet assigned a defence lawyer and no court appearance has been scheduled, said a law-enforcement source. Shahzad accepted that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) financed Shahzad’s training in bomb making, the law enforcement source added. Pakistani officials said several of Shahzad’s relatives were arrested in Pakistan after he was removed from the plane.

Maulana Fazlullah, the Swat Taliban (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, TTP) ‘chief’, has apparently been killed along with six other militants in a clash with Afghan border forces in Nuristan province of Afghanistan on May 26, intelligence sources said on May 27, reports Indian Express. Fazlullah, who was known as ‘Radio Maulana’ for his fiery sermons broadcast on an illegal radio station, apparently died during May 26’s clash with Afghan border forces, the sources said. Six others militants are also believed to have been killed in the gun battle in Nuristan. However, the report of Fazlullah’s death is yet to be officially confirmed, the sources added. However, Maulana Faqir Muhammad, the ‘chief’ of the Taliban (TTP) in Bajaur Agency, denied that Fazlullah had been killed in a gun battle. In an interview to BBC in November 2010, Fazlullah had said he had escaped to Afghanistan after fleeing a Pakistan Army offensive against the Taliban (TTP) in Swat valley. Fazlullah and his militants had established a parallel administration that controlled most parts of Swat District, located just 160 km from Islamabad.
