A power blackout caused by Maoists in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh has reportedly further worsened as they brought down three more high-tension power transmission towers in the Bastar region. So far, Maoists have blasted eight high-tension electricity transmission towers in the State since June 1, leading to power breakdown in the Dantewada, Bijapur, Narayanpur and Bastar districts. The health sector and water supply services are the worst affected in the region. A senior State-run National Mineral Development Corporation official told IANS, "Iron ore production and transportation to the domestic market and exports to China and Japan have come to a complete halt since the past five days and would continue to suffer for a week." According to police, the Maoists are disrupting power installations in order to target government offices, the police and even tribals who are part of the Salwa Judum (anti-Maoist movement).

Accepting that the left-wing extremist problem has spread to almost the entire State, the Chhattisgarh Government has decided to establish Anti-Naxalite (Operations) Cells in six more districts, which were till now free from left-wing extremism, according to Indian Express. The new cells will come up in the Raipur, Kawardha, Rajnandgaon, Dhamtari, Durg and Mahasamund districts. After the establishment of these special units, only four districts - Bilaspur, Korba, Raigarh and Janjgir - remain classified as non-Maoist affected. Ten out of the 20 police districts, Bastar, Kanker, Bijapur, Dantewara, Narayanpur, Sarguja, Korea, Jashpur, Balrampur and Surajpur, already have cells to tackle the Maoist problem.

The Maoists in Chhattisgarh have admitted that 500 of their rebels have been killed by cadres of anti-Maoist Salwa Judum movement in the last two years, a police official said on June 12. The admission came through leaflets and posters found by police in the Dantewada district, reportedly the worst hit by the Maoist insurgency in Chhattisgarh, according to IANS. "We recovered dozens of leaflets and posters in which Maoists said they had lost 500 fighters in the past two years," said Sant Kumar Paswan, Chhattisgarh's acting Director General of Police. He said the Maoists described their slain comrades as 'martyrs' and have vowed to take 'revenge' in the leaflets found in Bailadila hills, known to have one of the finest quality of iron ore stocks.

The Acting Director General of Police, S. K. Paswan, said the Government has taken the decision after receiving intelligence inputs that Maoists were planning to spread to more parts of the state. According to The Hindu, security forces (SF) have been put on high alert in several states including Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa, following a two-day economic blockade, reportedly announced by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) on June 26-27. Intelligence agencies suspect that Maoists, numbering more than 20,000, could target industries and the railways to disrupt the mining activity in Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand. The blockade was reportedly planned to oppose the formation of Special Economic Zones and the policies of Central and State governments, "which are playing into the hands of multi-national companies," said a Maoist statement issued in Orissa on June 20. However, the Central Committee of the party has not issued a statement announcing the blockade; the statements were issued by the State committees only. "We have noticed many posters announcing the blockade on the borders of Jharkhand with Orissa and West Bengal. We suspect that the naxals (left-wing extremists) could indulge in violence because they have been getting hit in Jharkhand and Bihar," Gauri Shankar Rath, Additional Director-General of Police, Jharkhand, told The Hindu.
