According to a Daily Star report, firearms are being openly brought into Bangladesh by a number of gangs of gunrunners from India through the porous Satkhira border after paying bribes to constables of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR). The report quoting underworld operatives and local people indicates that international gunrunning syndicates buy the firearms cheaply from the eastern Indian State of West Bengal, especially from its capital Kolkata and Bardhaman, and sell them at higher prices in the southwestern region of Bangladesh. From Satkhira, Khulna and Jessore, these arms reach other parts of Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka. The report further stated that many arms manufacturing workshops have thrived in the small bordering towns in India, while focusing on the Bangladesh markets.
