It also directed banks to freeze accounts of 49 other people and organisations, including the former Foreign Minister M. Morshed Khan, his wife, son and daughter, former state Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar and his relatives and the former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Prof M. A. Hadi. Accounts of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, Bangabandhu Memorial Trust and Grenade Affected Welfare Trust were also frozen.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel arrested four militants of the Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) along with ten kilograms of explosives and ten grenades from the Mirpur area in national capital Dhaka on August 2, reports New Age. They were identified as Ishak Sheikh of Gopalganj district, Rafiqul Islam of Jamalpur district, Khalilur Rahman of Rangpur district and Mohammad Anis of Bogra district. A soldering iron, a coil of soldering led, a drill machine, an emitter, four pressure switches, two capacitors, two metres of electric wire, one 1.5 volt battery and three books on jihad were also recovered from their possession. RAB has been raiding several places in Dhaka since August 1 after receiving information that JMB militants have set up some hideouts.

On August 5, the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres assaulted four journalists and kept two of them confined for three hours at the Rajshahi University, reports Daily Star. The journalists included Johaer Ibne Kalim of Jugantor, photo journalist Abdullah Iqbal, Samakal correspondent Meherul Hasan Sujon and Bhorer Kagoj correspondent Salauddin Muhammad Sumon. They were visiting the University to find out whether the ICS cadres were enrolling students in the voter list, on being informed that posters have been put up in the hall walls asking students to contact the hall unit ICS president for enrolling their names in the voter list and to collect the national identity cards.

President Iajuddin Ahmed, addressing an army headquarters selection board meeting at Dhaka Cantonment on August 5, said that the army saved the country from an anarchic situation on January 11, 2007, and now they appeared as the driving force in the ongoing anti-corruption campaign earning global appreciation. "The strong and neutral role of army saved the country from an anarchic situation during a transition moment on January 11," he said. The President also said that the pioneering and dynamic role of the military made successful the current government's campaign against corruption and severe crimes. While appreciating the role of the Army in preparing the voter list and national identity cards, he asked the Army to find competent people for promotion with a "completely neutral" attitude so that they could play a special role in developing an efficient army. "Above all, they should remain above political ambition," the President added.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel recovered 35 bombs from a mango orchard at Moharajpur in the Chapainawabganj district on August 5, reports Daily Star. Acting on information that some unidentified terrorists had gathered at the orchard, RAB personnel conducted a raid and recovered the bombs kept in small plastic containers wrapped with blue tapes. The terrorists, however, managed to escape. Col Shamsuzzaman Khan, director of RAB-5 in Rajshahi said, “The terrorists might have links to some quarters active to destabilise political situation. There are some groups in Chapainawabganj who make bombs for different quarters. We are seriously looking into it."

The Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court in Sylhet on August 7 granted bail to Nurjahan Begum Rupa and Afifa Rahman, wife and daughter of the executed Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) chief Abdur Rahman. The court also deferred the framing of charges in the explosives case filed after the arrest of Abdur Rahman along with his family members and some JMB cadres at a house in Sylhet on March 2, 2006, as one of the accused, Sabbir Ahmed Dulal, could not be brought to the court from Dhaka. The court fixed September 11 for framing charges against the accused.

The dead were identified as Razu and Wasim of Shantipara village. The slain extremists were abducted from Darshana market area at gunpoint and were taken to Chotodupkatia field before being killed. Police said both were accused in several extortion and robbery cases. The report added that recently three left-wing extremist outfits, the Biplobi Communist Party, Gono Bahini and Gono Mukti Fouj, and a gang named Mukti Bahini had joined hands to launch their activities in four southwestern districts - Kushtia, Jhenidah, Chuadanga and Meherpur. Quoting intelligence sources, the reports says that leaders of the Biplobi Communist Party, Gono Bahini, Gono Mukti Fouz and the Mukti Bahini led by criminal Mukti, held several meetings in the Kushtia and Chuadanga districts in the last 20 days. Leaders of the outfits from Kushtia, Jhenidah, Chuadanga and Meherpur attended the meetings to resolve issues regarding supremacy in their respective areas, local leadership and toll collection. According to official sources, at least 150 extremists, including some 'regional leaders', have been killed in the four districts since June 2004. At least 500 cadres belonging to 14 outfits are active in the south-western region.

Hospital and prison sources said Shamsul Haque, who was a village doctor, suddenly fell sick in the district central jail. He was brought to the hospital where he died on arrival. New Age reports that the National Board of Revenue on August 29 has directed all banks and other financial institutions to freeze all accounts of former prime minister and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Khaleda Zia and her family. The order reportedly will apply to members of the family, including her younger son Arafat Rahman along with his wife and two daughters as well as domestic helps at the Mainul Road residence in Dhaka. Financial institutions have been asked to send details of their bank balances and bank statements to the revenue board at the earliest. Earlier, the revenue authorities had frozen the bank accounts of Khaleda her jailed elder son Tarique Rahman and his wife. With these, the number of frozen bank accounts has risen to about 150 since the current army-backed interim administration took office on January 12, 2007. Bank accounts of another 500 individuals, business establishments and charities have also been put under scanner of the tax intelligence.
