Taliban’s spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid denied the report from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), stating that counter-terrorism is the main principle of the Afghan Government, reports Tolo News on February 2. He further said, “From the address of the United Nations, a regular slander program has been created against the Islamic Emirate (Taliban), and they always spread propaganda against them." “The stance of the UN is misused. We call on the countries who are members of the UNSC but have good relations with Afghanistan to not allow the reputation of the organization to be harmed,” he added.

On February 29, the spokesperson of the United States (US) Department of State, Matthew Alan Miller, stated that the agreement signed between the US and the de facto administration of Afghanistan (Taliban) in Doha four years ago empowered the group while undermining the Afghan government, reports The Khaama Press News Agency. He further stated that the agreement paved the way for the empowerment of the Taliban-led Afghanistan, subsequently weakening the Afghan Government's partners and obligating the United States to withdraw its troops without a clear strategy for the aftermath.

The United States (US) on March 18 warned the Taliban to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorists and to ensure that terrorist attacks are not orchestrated from Afghan soil, reports ARY News. “We remain committed to ensuring that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for terrorists who wish to harm the United States or our partners and allies,” State Department’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told a press briefing. While condoling the loss of lives of Pakistani soldiers in terrorist attacks and the reported loss of civilians on the other side of the border, Patel urged Pakistan and Afghanistan to address their differences. “We have seen reports that Pakistan carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan in response to the attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on Saturday at a military post. We deeply regret the loss of life and the injustices sustained during the attack in Pakistan and the loss of civilian lives during the strike in Afghanistan. We urge the Taliban to ensure that terrorist attacks are not launched from Afghan soil, and we urge Pakistan to exercise restraint and ensure civilians are not harmed in their counterterrorism efforts. We urge both sides to address any differences.”

Taliban’s ‘supreme leader’ Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada over the weekend said his government would officially re-implement the practice of stoning women to death for adultery, foxnews.com reports on March 26. "You say it’s a violation of women’s rights when we stone them to death," Akhundzada said in a voice message aired on Taliban-controlled state media, according to a translation by The Telegraph. "But we will soon implement the punishment for adultery," he said. "We will flog women in public. We will stone them to death in public." The comments are the strongest confirmation of Taliban’s intent to re-implement the harsh policies from its previous rule in the 1990s, though reports have shown that it never fully ceased its extreme abuse against women.

The Ministry of Interior stated that the production and processing of narcotics has shifted from neighbouring and regional countries to Afghanistan, Tolo News reports on March 29. Abdul Matin Qane, the spokesperson for the Ministry, stated, “We have some cases where (production areas) have become established, but they were transferred in their entirety from regional countries, especially from the same countries you mentioned; however, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is very serious and is conducting its own investigations in this sector. We take any new discovery in the production of drugs very seriously and do not allow it.”

Friba Rezayee, the first woman to represent Afghanistan at the Olympics, has called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ban Afghanistan due to the Taliban’s human rights record, Arab News reports on April 16. She has argued that under a such ban, Afghan women should still be allowed to participate as part of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. “Given tons and tons of evidence about the Taliban, about their brutal treatment of women and children, they are very dangerous,” Rezayee, who now lives in Vancouver, Canada, stated. “If the IOC allows them to enter the Olympics at the heart of Europe, in Paris in 2024, it’s very dangerous for the people”, she added.

In an interview with the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS), the Russian special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, stated that the Taliban in Afghanistan are no longer considered an enemy by his country, reports Amu TV on May 16. He said, “I don’t mean to say that the Taliban are our number one friend, but obviously, they are not enemies. The Taliban openly say that they trust Russia as the former Soviet Union’s successor.” He further said, “The Taliban are former mujahideen who fought against the Soviet army and the former Afghan regime that was supported by the Soviet Union. Having fought against other foreign troops, they concluded that the Soviet Union not only waged war in Afghanistan but also built infrastructure. They acknowledge that the Soviet Union had no expansionist plans.” “Yes, the Soviet Union had specific worldviews which ran counter to Afghanistan’s traditional views. The Taliban consider that our actions were wrong but they credit the real contribution to Afghanistan’s modernization made by the Soviet Union,” he added.
