May 2, 2022, marks the 24th day of a continuous protest in front of the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo demanding the resignation of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Government, reports Colombo Page. A large number of people from various parts of the island were present at the protest May 2 as well. Protesters carrying various placards and national flags and shouting slogans called for the resignation of the President and the government displayed placards with various slogans around the Presidential Secretariat building. The protest was attended by religious leaders, youths, civil activists, artists, university students, journalists, disabled war heroes, trade union representatives, scholars and people from all walks of life from various parts of the country. People, including small children, have joined the protest and protesters have set up libraries, first aid units and media units.

The death toll rose to eight and over 200 persons have also been injured in Colombo and other cities on May 10 in the unprecedented violence in Sri Lanka that erupted after supporters of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful anti-Government protesters demanding his ouster over the country's worst economic crisis that led to acute shortages of staple food, fuel and power, reports The Tribune. Mahinda Rajapaksa (76), resigned as Sri Lankan Prime Minister on May 9 amid unprecedented economic turmoil, hours after his supporters attacked anti-Government protesters, prompting authorities to impose a nationwide curfew and deploy Army troops in the capital. The violence saw arson attacks on the homes of several politicians, including the ancestral home of the Rajapaksas in Hambantota. Video footage showed the entire house of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his younger brother and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Medamulana in Hambantota city was burning. Prime Minister Mahinda's House in Kurunegala was also set on fire by protesters while a mob also destroyed D A Rajapaksa Memorial - constructed in the memory of the father of Mahinda and Gotabaya - in Medamulana, Hambantota. Chairman of the Imaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha A V Sarath Kumara (63) was killed following an attack on his residence on May 9. One person was killed following an attack on a popular hotel in Negombo. Multiple luxury cars worth millions of rupees were completely destroyed. Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Member of Parliament (MP) Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security guard were killed in Nittambuwa on May 9. Eye-witnesses said that the people who had come with the MP to Nittambuwa shot at a group of people protesting against the attack on the peaceful protesters in front of the Temple Trees and the President's Office. A 27-year-old male died in the shooting incident. Two persons were killed in a shooting that took place at the Weeraketiya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman's residence on May 9 night. A person succumbed to his injuries at the hospital in Colombo. The Colombo national hospital said at least 217 persons had been admitted for treatment.

Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne, on May 11, stated that the death toll following the recent turmoil in the island has risen to nine including two Police officers, reports Colombo Page. Due to the recent violence a total of 219 injured persons, 41 vehicles set on fire, 61 vehicles damaged and damages to 136 properties are reported, he stated while elaborating on the total damages during a special media briefing held at the Defense Ministry at Defence Headquarters Complex, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. “The countrywide curfew would be lifted tomorrow morning (12) based on the status quo”, he said indicating “there are no reports of violence informed today except a few minor incidents”. “Curfew may remain unchanged if unlawful incidents continue” he also reasoned and stressed that the “law enforcing agencies are prepared to react to any incidence that may arise during the coming period, day or night”.

Ranil Wickremesinghe has previously served five times as the island nation’s Prime Minister. Secretary to the President Gamini Senarath and Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe were also present at the occasion. Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, on May 18, has remanded four suspects, including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Member of Parliamentarians (MPs) Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayatilake, who were arrested in connection with the recent attacks on Maina Go Gama near Temple Trees and Gota Go Gama at Galle Face in Colombo, until the 25th of this month, reports Colombo Page. The Magistrate further stated that the bail applications of Sanath and Milan will be rejected under the Bail Act as the investigation into the suspects has not been completed and if they are released on bail there could be a public disturbance. In addition, the Magistrate ordered that former Western Provincial Councilor Amal Silva and an employee of the Dehiwala Mount Lavinia Municipal Council who were arrested in connection with this incident be remanded until the 25th and produced before an identification parade on that day. Deputy Solicitor General Riyaz Bari, appearing for the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), said that investigations conducted by the CID had revealed that the two MPs Sanath and Milan, who are currently under arrest, had been actively involved in the recent attacks on Gota Go Gama and Maina Go Gama.

The new ministers who took oaths are: Nimal Siripala de Silva - Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation; Dr. Susil Premajayantha - Minister of Education; Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella - Minister of Health; Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksha - Judiciary, Prisons and Minister of Constitutional Reforms; Harin Fernando - Minister of Tourism and Lands; Ramesh Pathirana - Minister of Plantation Industries; Manusha Nanayakkara - Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment; Nalin Fernando - Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security; and Tiran Alles - Minister of Public Security. Meanwhile, the ‘No Deal Gama’ protest in front of Temple Trees continues for the ninth day on May 21. The Colombo High Court, on May 25, ordered the release on bail of millionaire businessman Mohamed Ibrahim, the father of suicide bombers Mohamed Ilham and Mohamed Inshaf in the Easter Sunday attack, and another suspect, identified as Mohamed Hijaz, on a Rs.200,000 cash bail and three surety bails of Rs.1 million each, reports Colombo Page. The judge granted bail on the grounds that the accused had been remanded for nearly three years and considering their health condition. The Attorney General had filed the case under the Prevention of Terrorism Act against three suspects, including Mohamed Ibrahim, for allegedly concealing information from the Police despite having knowledge of a terrorist attack on Easter Sunday. Court ordered the defendants to be banned from traveling abroad and to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on the first and last Sunday of each month. Reportedly, Mohamed Ilham and Mohamed Inshaf, carried out the suicide bombings at the Cinnamon Grand and Shangri-La Hotels respectively on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019, in which at least 279 persons including 42 foreign nationals were killed.

Sri Lanka Police used tear gas and high-pressure water cannons to disperse thousands of protesters marching in the capital Colombo, on May 28, to mark the 50-day anniversary since the beginning of the ‘People’s Struggle’ against the government, reports Colombo Page. Police fired tear gas and water cannons when the protesters trying to enter Bank Mawatha near the World Trade Center to reach the protest site at the Galle Face Green removed barricades and clashed with the Police. Police detained three protesters but released them a short while later.
